Bits of Torah Truths – #Torah Concept in the NT: Bid no false teacher god speed – Episode 806
2 John 10–11

2 John 10–11
2 Jn:10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house, and do not give him a greeting; 2 Jn:11 for the one who gives him a greeting participates in his evil deeds. (NASB)

John’s command not to greet or assist a false teacher (2 John 10-11) reflects Torah principles that forbid giving support, protection, or endorsement to those who lead people into error. The Torah consistently requires separation from false teaching so that the community is not drawn into shared guilt.
– Torah parallels –
- Deuteronomy 13:1–5 – Israel must not listen to or support a prophet who leads people away from YHWH; the community must reject him completely.
- Deuteronomy 13:6–11 – Even close relatives who entice others to serve other gods must not be protected or encouraged, showing that affection cannot override loyalty to truth.
- Deuteronomy 13:12–18 – A city led astray by false teachers must not be spared or aided; Israel may not give any form of support to those who corrupt the covenant.
- Deuteronomy 17:2–7 – Those who introduce idolatry or false worship must be judged, and the community must not shield them or participate in their sin.
- Exodus 23:2 – Israel must not join or align with those who promote wrongdoing, a principle that includes refusing to endorse false teaching.
- Numbers 16:23–26 – Moses commands Israel to separate from Korah’s rebellion so they do not share in his sin, illustrating the danger of association with false spiritual leadership.
- Deuteronomy 7:2–5 – Israel must not make covenants or alliances with those who would lead them into idolatry, reinforcing the principle of refusing partnership with spiritual corruption.
– Context Synthesis –
John’s instruction not to bid a false teacher “god speed” reflects the Torah’s long‑established pattern: the people of God must not assist, endorse, or show partnership with those who distort the truth. In the Torah, aiding a false prophet or joining with those who corrupt worship is treated as participation in their sin. John applies this same covenant logic to the early believers, warning that even a gesture of approval can make one a sharer in the evil work. The continuity is clear fidelity to YHWH requires refusing to strengthen the influence of those who lead others astray.
– Core Insight –
John’s warning is not a new ethic but a continuation of the Torah’s insistence that God’s people must not support or legitimize false teaching. To greet or assist a deceiver is to share in the harm they spread, whereas loyalty to YHWH and to Messiah Yeshua requires clear separation from those who corrupt the truth. This is how John taught Torah in His Epistles; the Torah has not passed away!
