Paul’s words: “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free” (Gal. 5:1) are not a NT innovation. Paul is drawing directly from Torah categories of freedom, release, redemption, and refusal to return to bondage. When you trace the vocabulary and covenant logic, the parallels become striking.
– Torah Parallels to “Stand in Liberty” (Gal. 5:1) –
- Liberty = God’s Act of Deliverance From Bondage. The Torah’s foundational story is freedom from slavery. Liberty is not abstract; it is covenantal. Exod. 13:3, 20:2, Lev. 26:13, Deut. 5:6.
- Standing Fast = Refusing to Return to Slavery. The Torah repeatedly warns Israel not to return to Egypt, the archetype of bondage. Num. 14:3–4, Deut. 17:16, 28:68.
- Liberty = Freedom to Serve God, Not Self. In the Torah, freedom is not autonomy; it is freedom to serve HaShem. Exod. 4:22–23, 7:16, Deut. 10:12-13.
- Liberty = Release From Debt, Bondage, and Oppression (Jubilee). The Torah’s most explicit “liberty” language appears in the Jubilee laws. Lev. 25:10, 25:39–41, Deut. 15:12–15.
- Liberty = Freedom From the Curse of Disobedience. The Torah teaches that bondage comes from covenant violation; freedom comes from covenant faithfulness. Deut. 28:1–14, 28:15–68.
- Liberty = Freedom From False Masters. The Torah warns Israel not to submit to foreign gods, foreign laws, or foreign masters. Exodus 23:32-33, Deut. 6:12-15.
– Context Synthesis –
How Torah Shapes Paul’s “Stand in Liberty.” Torah Foundations:
- God breaks the yoke of bondage (Lev. 26:13).
- Israel must not return to Egypt (Deut. 17:16).
- Freedom is for serving God (Exod. 4:23).
- Jubilee proclaims liberty (Lev. 25:10).
- Bondage comes from disobedience (Deut. 28).
- Freedom requires rejecting false masters (Deut. 13).
– Core Insight –
Paul is summarizing the Torah’s entire redemption pattern: God sets you free … now stand in that freedom and don’t go back. This is how Paul taught Torah in the NT, the Torah has not passed away!
