Paul’s instruction in 1 Corinthians 7:11, “Let not the husband put away his wife,” is deeply rooted in Torah ethics regarding the sanctity and permanence of marriage. While the Torah permits divorce, it does so with gravity and caution, emphasizing that separation is never to be taken lightly or used capriciously. In Genesis 2:24 – The Creation Blueprint – “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” This foundational verse establishes marriage as a “lifelong union,” not a disposable arrangement. Paul’s teaching reflects this original design: cleaving, not casting off. Deuteronomy 24:1–4 – The Law of Divorce – Divorce is permitted, but only under specific conditions: A written certificate must be given. If the woman remarries, the first husband “cannot take her back.” This law discourages “frivolous separation” and “flip-flop reconciliation,” reinforcing the seriousness of “putting away.” In Malachi 2:16 “For the LORD, the God of Israel, says that He hates divorce…” Here Malachi rebukes husbands who deal treacherously with their wives. Paul’s instruction not to “put away” echoes this prophetic warning rooted in Torah values. This is how Paul and the NT text taught Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
