1 John 4:1
1 John 4:1
4:1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. (NASB)
There are parallels in the Torah to the concept of “Believe not every spirit” like we read in 1 John 4:1. For example, the Torah emphasizes the importance of discerning true prophets from false ones and being cautious about whom to trust. Deuteronomy 13:1-5 warns us about false prophets who may perform signs and wonders but lead people away from God. Deuteronomy 18:20-22 also provides criteria for identifying false prophets. It states that if a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord but their prophecy does not come to pass, they are not to be feared or followed. These passages from the Torah align with the message in 1 John 4:1, which advises believers to test the spirits to see whether they are from God, as many false prophets have gone out into the world. The Torah has not passed away!
