This concept “Let One who lacks, ask for wisdom” (James 1:5) is a beautiful example of the deep theology from the Torah and broader Hebrew wisdom tradition. While James 1:5 explicitly encourages the one who lacks wisdom to ask God, the Torah lays the groundwork for this idea in both principle and precedent. Here are several key Torah themes and passages that resonate with James 1:5: Moses’ Prayer for Wisdom (Exodus 33:13). Here Moses asks not for power, but for understanding of God’s ways—a request for divine wisdom. This aligns with James’ emphasis on seeking wisdom from God in faith. In Deuteronomy 4:5–6 we read Wisdom as Covenant Obedience, “See, I have taught you statutes and rules… for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples…” Here, the Torah itself is framed as wisdom—living by God’s instruction is the path to discernment. The implication: if one lacks wisdom, one should turn to God’s revealed instruction. Numbers 27:15–17 Moses Prays for a Wise Successor. Moses asks God to appoint a leader with discernment to guide the people—again, wisdom is sought from God, not assumed. Note also Solomon’s Request for Wisdom (1 Kings 3:5–12) and how God generously provides for him this request. We note how James 1:5 reflects a deeply Hebraic idea, that wisdom is not self-generated—it is relational and bestowed by God. So, James isn’t introducing a new idea—he’s reframing a Torah principle in the language of discipleship and prayer. This is how the NT and James taught Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
