Paul in Philippians 4:8 says “things of good report” (Greek: euphēma), has a surprisingly strong foundation in the Torah.
– Torah Parallels to “Think on Things of Good Report” (Philippians 4:8) –
- Torah’s Emphasis on a Good Name (Reputation). The Torah repeatedly stresses the importance of a good name, which is the foundation of “good report.” Deut. 4:6, 6:18, 39:3-4.

- Torah’s Celebration of God’s Works as “Good Report.” The Torah models speaking well of God recounting His deeds as praiseworthy. Exod. 15:1–2, Deut. 10:21, Deut. 32:3–4.
- Torah’s Vision of Israel as a People of Good Reputation. Israel is called to live in a way that produces a good report among the nations. Gen. 12:2, Deut. 26:18–19, 28:9-10.
- Torah’s Call to Remember and Recount Good Testimonies. “Good report” includes testimony, recounting what God has done. Exod. 13:8–10, Deut. 6:20–25, Deut. 8:2–5.
- Torah’s Condemnation of Bad Report (Evil Report). The Torah contrasts “good report” with “evil report,” giving clarity to Paul’s meaning. Num. 13:32, Num. 14:36–37.
