The command “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness” (Matt. 6:33; Luke 12:31) is not a NT innovation. It is a direct continuation of Torah covenant priorities: God’s rule first, obedience first, trust first and then provision follows.
– Torah Parallels to “Seek God’s Kingdom First” (Matt. 6:33; Luke 12:31) –
- Deuteronomy 6:4–5 The Foundational Priority Command “Love YHWH your God with all your heart, soul, and strength.”
- Deuteronomy 10:12–13 Seek God’s Rule Above All, “What does YHWH require of you… to walk in His ways, to love Him, to serve Him… to keep His commandments.”
- Deuteronomy 11:13–15 Put God First and He Provides If Israel loves God and serves Him with all their heart…
- Exodus 23:25 Serve God First, Provision Follows, “You shall serve YHWH your God, and He will bless your bread and water.”
- Deuteronomy 28:1–14 Obedience First, Blessing Follows, “If you diligently obey… all these blessings will come upon you.”
- Deuteronomy 4:29 Seek God First, Even in Distress “You will seek YHWH your God and find Him when you search for Him with all your heart.”
- Deuteronomy 30:10–16 Choose God’s Rule and Live, “Obey His voice… love YHWH… walk in His ways… then you shall live and multiply.”
- Numbers 15:37–41 Remember God’s Rule First.
– Context Synthesis –
- God’s rule is the first priority Deut. 6:4–5; 10:12–13 Love YHWH with all your heart; walk in His ways.
- Seek His righteousness Deut. 6:17; 10:13; 30:16 Keep His commandments; do what is right.
- Provision follows seeking Deut. 11:13–15; Ex. 23:25 Serve Him → He gives rain, food, blessing.
- Wholehearted seeking Deut. 4:29 Seek with all your heart and soul.
- Kingdom-first = life and blessing Deut. 30:15–20; 28:1–14 Choose life; obey → blessing.
– Core Insight –
Yeshua’s command in Matt. 6:33 is a Torah covenant principle restated: Put God’s rule first (Deut. 6:4–5), Walk in His ways (Deut. 10:12–13), Trust Him for provision (Deut. 11:13–15; Ex. 23:25). The Sermon on the Mount is not replacing Torah, it is intensifying and re-centering it. This is how Yeshua taught Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
