Ephesians 2:11–12
2:11 Therefore remember that formerly you, the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called “Uncircumcision” by the so-called “Circumcision,” which is performed in the flesh by human hands— 2:12 remember that you were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. Paul according to Ephesians 2:11–12 calls believers to remember their former condition: alienation, separation, hopelessness, and exclusion from God’s covenant people. That “remembering” is not psychological nostalgia, it’s covenantal identity formation. And that pattern is deeply rooted in the Torah.

– Torah Parallels to “Remember What You Are Saved From” (Eph. 2:11–12) –

  1. “Remember that you were slaves in Egypt” the central Torah parallel Deut. 5:15, 6:12, 15:15, 16:12, and 24:18-22 This is the dominant refrain of the Torah. Israel is commanded again and again to remember their former condition so they will understand the grace of their deliverance.
  2. “Remember the day you stood before the LORD at Sinai” Deuteronomy 4:9–10
  3. “Remember how the LORD led you in the wilderness” Deuteronomy 8:2–5
  4. “Remember what Amalek did to you” Deuteronomy 25:17–19,
  5. “Remember the covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob” Exodus 2:24; Leviticus 26:42 God remembers His covenant when Israel cannot save themselves.
  6. “Remember how stiff‑necked you were” Deuteronomy 9:6–7

– Context Synthesis –

  • Remember you were slaves in Egypt, Past bondage, Past alienation.
  • “Remember Sinai” Being brought near, Brought near by Christ.
  • “Remember the wilderness” Dependence, weakness, Dead in sins, saved by grace.
  • “Remember Amalek” Vulnerability, rescue, Hopelessness without the Lord God Almighty and His Messiah.
  • “Remember the patriarchal covenant” God’s faithfulness, Inclusion in God’s covenant.
  • “Remember your rebellion” Unworthiness, Salvation not by works.

– Core Insight –

The Torah repeatedly commands Israel to remember what they were saved from so they can understand who they are now. Paul applies the same covenant‑memory pattern to Gentile believers in Ephesians 2. This is how Paul taught Torah in the NT, the Torah has not passed away!
