The phrase “Rejoice with those who rejoice” (Romans 12:15) has strong conceptual roots in the Torah, even though the Torah does not use that exact phrasing. The Torah repeatedly commands shared joy, communal celebration, and entering into the blessings of others as a covenant responsibility.

– Torah Parallels to “Rejoice in the Blessings of Others” (Romans 12:15) –

  1. Rejoicing Together in Worship and Blessing Deuteronomy 12:7, 12, 18 Israel is commanded to rejoice before the LORD together, including family, servants, Levites, and the vulnerable.
  2. Rejoicing in the Blessing of the Land Together Deuteronomy 26:10–11 (First fruits) Israel must rejoice in every good thing the LORD has given you and your household.
  3. Rejoicing in Festivals: Shared Joy Across All Social Groups Deuteronomy 16:11, 14–15 During the feasts, Israel must rejoice with: sons and daughters, servants, Levites, strangers, orphans and widows, etc.
  4. Rejoicing in Another’s Deliverance and Provision Deuteronomy 15:10–11 While not using the word “rejoice,” the Torah commands Israel to give generously to the poor with a joyful heart, celebrating God’s blessing upon the recipient.
  5. Rejoicing in God’s Covenant Faithfulness to Others Genesis 21:6 Sarah says, “God has made me laugh, and all who hear will laugh with me.”

– Context Synthesis –

  • Joy is communal Deut. 12 Rejoice together before God, rejoice with those who rejoice.
  • Joy includes the outsider Deut. 16 Celebrate others’ blessings, Enter into others’ joy.
  • Joy in others’ provision Deut. 26 Rejoice in blessings given to others, Celebrate God’s goodness to others.
  • Joy in others’ uplift Deut. 15 Joyful generosity, Joy in others’ flourishing.
  • Joy in others’ deliverance Gen. 21 Laugh with the blessed, Share in others’ joy.

– Core Insight –

The Torah establishes a covenant culture where joy is shared, blessing is communal, and God’s goodness to one becomes joy for all. Paul’s “rejoice with those who rejoice” is simply the Torah’s communal joy ethic extended to the entire body of Messiah. This is how Paul taught Torah in the NT, the Torah has not passed away!
