Paul saying Rebuke Works of Darkness (Eph. 5:11) is commanding two actions: Separation from evil and Exposure/rebuke of hidden wrongdoing. Both ideas have deep roots in the Torah.

– Torah Parallels to “Rebuke Works of Darkness” (Eph. 5:11) –

  1. Expose Hidden Sin and Bring It to Light Deuteronomy 13:12–14 Investigate Hidden Wickedness. The Torah requires Israel to expose wrongdoing that is hidden “in one of your towns.”
  2. Rebuke Sin Directly Leviticus 19:17 “You shall surely rebuke your neighbor.” This is the Torah’s foundational command for rebuke.
  3. Separate From Evil and Do Not Participate in It Deuteronomy 7:25–26 Do not bring abominable things into your house.
  4. Remove Evil From Your Midst Deuteronomy 17:7; 19:19; 21:21 “So you shall purge the evil from among you.”
  5. Do Not Imitate or Join in Wicked Practices Deuteronomy 18:9 “You shall not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.”
  6. Expose Falsehood and Deception: Exodus 23:1 “Do not spread a false report.” Exodus 23:7 “Keep far from a false matter.”

– Context Synthesis –

  • Do not participate in works of darkness Deut. 7:25–26; 18:9 Separation from evil.
  • Expose/rebuke hidden sin Deut. 13:12–14 Investigate and bring evil to light.
  • Rebuke wrongdoing Lev. 19:17 Rebuke prevents sin and protects community.
  • Purge evil from among you Deut. 17:7; 19:19; 21:21 Public exposure and removal of evil.
  • Reject falsehood and corruption Exod. 23:1, 7 Do not join in or tolerate evil reports.

– Conclusion –

Paul’s command in Ephesians 5:11 is a direct continuation of Torah ethics: Do not join in evil (Deut. 7:25–26; 18:9), Expose hidden wrongdoing (Deut. 13:12–14), Rebuke sin directly (Lev. 19:17), Purge evil from the community (Deut. 17:7; 19:19; 21:21), Reject falsehood and corruption (Exod. 23:1, 7). Paul is applying the Torah’s judicial and communal purity principles to the moral life of the ekklēsia. This is how Paul taught Torah in the NT, the Torah has not passed away!
