According to the Scriptures, meekness is a Torah virtue! This is embodied especially in Moses and Abraham, and is commanded for all people to be humble, gentle, and dependent on God. Paul’s “put on meekness” (Col. 3:12) is not a new ethic; it is a continuation of Torah character formation.

– Torah Parallels to “Put On Meekness” (Col. 3:12) –

  • Moses, The Torah’s Supreme Example of Meekness. “Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.” (Num. 12:3).
  • Abraham, Humility and Meek Intercession. Abraham said, “I am but dust and ashes” (Gen. 18:27).
  • Israel Commanded to Walk in Meekness (Deut. 8:2–3), according to Deuteronomy 8:2–3 we are commanded to be humble among people.
  • Warnings Against Pride (Deut. 8:11–18), God warns Israel not to become proud when they prosper.
  • Meekness as Gentleness Toward Others, (Gen 13, 15) Meekness is characterized by humility and gentleness.

– Torah examples include –

Abraham’s gentle negotiation with Lot (Gen. 13), Joseph’s gentle treatment of his brothers (Gen. 45), Commands to treat the stranger, widow, orphan with compassion (Ex. 22; Deut. 10). Meekness in the Torah = gentleness toward the vulnerable.

– Context Synthesis –

  • Paul’s command to “put on meekness” is a Torah ethic reframed as a garment: Moses embodies meekness, Abraham models humble intercession, Israel is commanded to cultivate humility, Pride is forbidden, Gentleness is required in relationships.

Paul is not inventing meekness, he is summarizing the Torah’s character‑forming vision and telling believers to wear it like clothing. This is how Paul taught Torah in the NT, the Torah has not passed away!
