When Paul says: “Above all these things, put on love, which is the bond of perfection.” (Col 3:14) he is drawing directly from the Torah’s core covenant ethic. In fact, love is the single most explicit and repeated moral command in the Five Books of Moses, and Paul is intentionally echoing it.

– TORAH PARALLELS TO “PUT ON LOVE” (Col. 3:14) –

  • The Foundational Torah Command: Love Your Neighbor Leviticus 19:18 “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” This is the direct Torah root of Paul’s command.
  • Love as Covenant Loyalty (kḥesed) in the Torah Deuteronomy 7:9 God keeps covenant and steadfast love (kḥesed) with those who love Him (Deuteronomy 10:12–13)
  • Love as the Binding Force of Community (Paul’s “bond of perfection”) Leviticus 19:17–18 Do not hate your brother in your heart, Do not take vengeance, Do not bear grudges, Love your neighbor as yourself.
  • Love Expressed Through Justice and Mercy Deuteronomy 10:18–19 God: executes justice for the orphan and widow and loves the stranger.
  • Narrative Models of Love in the Torah Genesis 45 & 50 Joseph’s actions embody covenantal love: forgiveness, provision, and reconciliation, Love as the Fulfillment of the Torah Romans 13:10 “Love is the fulfillment of the law.” Galatians 5:14 “The whole law is fulfilled in one word: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’”

– CONTEXT SYNTHESIS –

  • Paul’s “Put On Love” and Torah Parallels: Put on love Lev 19:18 Central Torah command; love your neighbor. Love as the “bond of perfection” Lev 19:17–18 Love binds community together; prevents hatred, vengeance, grudges.
  • Love as covenant loyalty Deut 7:9; 10:12–13 Love = faithful obedience and relational loyalty.
  • Love expressed through justice Deut 10:18–19 Love the stranger; imitate God’s compassion. Love through forgiveness Gen 45; 50 Joseph’s forgiveness as covenantal love.
  • Love through intercession Exod 32–34 Moses’ sacrificial love for Israel.

Paul’s “put on love” is not a new Christian ethic; it is the Torah’s central command, reframed in Yeshua the Messiah. This is how Paul taught Torah in the NT, the Torah has not passed away!
