In Jude 20’s phrase “pray in the Spirit” we find deep Torah roots. The Torah doesn’t use that wording, yet it emphasizes prayer and worship animated by God’s Spirit (ruach) and by wholehearted devotion rather than mechanical ritual.
– Torah Parallels to “Pray in the Spirit” –
- Spirit as Divine Presence in Prayer Numbers 11:25-29 God places His Spirit (ruach) upon the seventy elders, and they prophesy. Moses wishes “that all the LORD’s people were prophets, and that the LORD would put His Spirit upon them!” This anticipates prayer and speech empowered by God’s Spirit.
- Wholehearted Prayer Deuteronomy 6:5 “Love the LORD your God with all your heart, soul, and might.” Prayer in the Spirit aligns with this command: devotion flowing from the innermost being, not rote words.
- Spirit-Guided Intercession Exodus 33:11–16 Moses speaks with God “face to face” and pleads for God’s presence (Spirit) to remain with Israel. His prayer is inseparable from the Spirit’s guidance.
- Ruach as Life and Breath Genesis 2:7 God breathes into Adam the breath of life (neshamah). Prayer “in the Spirit” echoes this: human breath animated by divine Spirit becomes prayer.
Note how the NT provides a condensed synthesis:
- God’s Spirit empowers speech (Num. 11),
- guides intercession (Exod. 33), and
- animates life itself (Gen. 2).
Praying in the Spirit = praying with divine empowerment, sincerity, and alignment with God’s presence, this is exactly what the Torah models in Moses and Israel’s encounters with God. This is how Jude taught Torah in the NT, the Torah has not passed away!
