In Matthew 6:9–13 Yeshua provides a liturgical prayer known as is the Lord’s Prayer, introduced with “After this manner therefore pray ye…” This provides a model prayer: reverence for God, desire for His kingdom, request for daily sustenance, forgiveness, and deliverance from evil. The Torah does not contain a set liturgical prayer like this, but it does provide parallels and prototypes for structured prayer. – Torah Parallels to Matthew 6:9-13Invocation of God’s Name Deuteronomy 32:3 “For I will proclaim the name of the LORD; ascribe greatness to our God.” is similar to “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be thy name,” this verse emphasizes sanctifying God’s name. Kingdom & Will Exodus 19:6 Israel is called to be “a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.” This parallels “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done.” Deuteronomy 30:8–10 we are exhorted to obey God’s commandments wholeheartedly, aligning with His will. Daily Provision Exodus 16:4 note how God provides manna daily in the wilderness. This is the clearest Torah parallel to “Give us this day our daily bread.” Forgiveness Exodus 34:6-7 God reveals Himself as “merciful and gracious, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin.” This mirrors “Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” Numbers 14:19-20 Moses prays, “Pardon the iniquity of this people,” and God forgives, note the parallel. Deliverance from Evil Deuteronomy 30:7 God promises to put curses on Israel’s enemies. Exodus 14:13-14 God delivers Israel from Pharaoh at the Red Sea. These echo the concept of “Deliver us from evil.” Note how the Lord’s Prayer is not a direct quotation from Torah but a condensed synthesis of Torah themes: Sanctify God’s name → Deut. 32:3, Kingdom & will → Exod. 19:6, Deut. 30:7, Daily bread → Exod. 16:4 (manna), Forgiveness → Exod. 34, Num. 14:19-20, Deliverance → Exod. 14:13-14, Deut. 30:7. In other words, Matthew 6:9–13 is a Jewish prayer template, deeply rooted in the Torah’s theology and narrative. This is how Yeshua taught Torah in the NT, the Torah has not passed away!
