The Torah lays the groundwork for Peter’s command to “love the brotherhood” (1 Peter 2:17) by emphasizing covenantal love, solidarity, and responsibility within the people of God. The Torah establishes the same ethic within the covenant family of God’s people. – Torah Parallels to “Love the Brotherhood” – Leviticus 19:18 Love Your Neighbor, this is the central Torah command for covenantal love. “Neighbor” here primarily means fellow believer, the covenant community. Peter’s “brotherhood” echoes this same covenantal solidarity. Leviticus 19:34 Love the Stranger Who Joins You, notice how brotherhood in Torah is not limited to bloodline; it extends to those who join Israel’s covenant life. Deuteronomy 15:7–11 Care for the Poor Among Your Brothers, Israel is commanded to open their hand generously to the poor “within your gates.” This parallels the Brotherhood as expressed in the early church. (Acts 2:44–45) Deuteronomy 22:1–4 Guard Your Brother’s Well-Being, the command to return lost animals or help a brother’s fallen donkey show that love is active, not passive. Exodus 32:27–29 Covenant Loyalty Above All, even in judgment, the Levites are called “brothers” who stand together for God’s covenant. The Brotherhood in Torah is tied to shared loyalty to God’s covenant, not just kinship. This is how Peter teaches Torah in the NT, Peter extends this to the church, the new covenant family, urging believers to show the same covenantal love to one another. The ethic of “love the brotherhood” is not new but a continuation of the Torah’s covenantal vision, fulfilled in Christ’s community. This is how Peter taught Torah in the NT text, the Torah has not passed away!
