Note that the phrase “Walk in the Spirit” from Galatians 5:25 is distinctly used by Paul, its conceptual roots are deeply embedded in the Torah. Paul’s exhortation reflects a continuity with Torah themes of walking in alignment with God’s will, though he reframes the mechanism as Spirit-led. Here’s how to understand this – Walking with God: Torah Foundations – The Torah frequently uses the metaphor of “walking” to describe covenantal obedience. Genesis 17:1 “Walk before Me and be blameless” God’s command to Abraham to live in covenant fidelity. Leviticus 26:3,12 “If you walk in My statutes… I will walk among you” Walking in God’s statutes leads to divine fellowship. Deuteronomy 10:12 “What does the LORD require… but to walk in all His ways” Ethical and spiritual alignment with God’s character. These passages emphasize a life patterned after divine instruction which is what Paul later calls “fruit of the Spirit.” – Spirit and Torah: Paul’s Reframing – Paul’s argument in Galatians 5 is that the Spirit now internalizes and helps us to live out what the Torah commands. See Galatians 5:14, Galatians 5:22–23, and Leviticus 19:18. These verses on the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace…) mirrors Torah’s ethics. Paul’s claim is that Spirit-led living fulfills the Torah’s imperatives. Paul sees the Spirit as empowering believers to live out this love, which is the essence of Torah obedience. “Walking in the Spirit” is not a rejection of Torah but an internal transformation enabling us to walk in God’s ways; Paul claims the Spirit enables that walk in a new covenantal context. This is how Paul and the NT taught Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
