Paul says in Philippians 3:16 “let us walk by the same rule” which reflects a principle of shared covenantal conduct, which finds strong structural parallels in the Torah. While Paul’s language is framed in terms of New Covenant unity, the Torah repeatedly emphasizes communal adherence to divine instruction, often using terms like “statutes,” “ordinances,” and “walk.” – Walking According to Divine Instruction – Genesis 17:1 “Walk before Me and be perfect” God’s command to Abraham to live in covenant fidelity. Leviticus 18:4 “You shall observe My judgments and keep My ordinances… walk in them,” where “Walking” is a metaphor for consistent obedience. Deuteronomy 5:33 “You shall walk in all the ways which the LORD your God has commanded you” which is communal instruction tied to covenant blessing. And Deuteronomy 10:12–13 “What does the LORD require… but to walk in all His ways” is ethical and spiritual alignment with God’s Word. These passages establish “walking” as a metaphor for living in accordance with God’s revealed standard, which is the Torah and all of Scripture. – Shared Rule and Communal Unity – Exodus 24:3, Deuteronomy 29:9–15, and Leviticus 19:15–18. These texts reflect the Torah’s insistence that the rule is not individualized, it is shared, binding, and covenantal, much like Paul’s exhortation to walk by the same standard. The Parallel to Philippians 3:16 is in “Walking as obedience” Gen. 17:1; Lev. 18:4, a “Shared standard” Ex. 24:3; Deut. 29:9–15, and “Communal fidelity” Deut. 10:12–13; Lev. 19:15–18. Paul’s phrase “walk by the same rule” echoes the Torah’s vision of a people walking together under divine instruction, not merely as individuals but as a covenant community. This is how Paul taught Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
