Paul’s exhortation in 1 Corinthians 10:9 “Let us not tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents” is a direct allusion to a dramatic moment in the Torah: Numbers 21:4–9, where Israel tested God’s patience in the wilderness and faced judgment. The context is that Israel grew impatient during their journey from Mount Hor, complaining against God and Moses: “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness?” Their grumbling and rejection of divine provision (manna) was seen as testing God’s faithfulness. God sent fiery serpents among them, and many died. Moses was instructed to make a bronze serpent and lift it up, those who looked at it lived. This is the exact episode Paul references. Though he uses “Christ” (some manuscripts say “the Lord”), the theological point is clear. Paul’s use of “tempt Christ” is provocative, it parallels who we are in Christ with the Lord God who sustains us (note 1 Cor. 10:4 “the Rock was Christ”). Whether one reads “Christ” or “the Lord,” the warning is the same: don’t presume upon grace while rejecting God’s word and provision. This is how Paul taught Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
