Paul’s warning in 1 Corinthians 10:8 (“Let us not commit fornication…”) is a direct callback to a pivotal moment in the Torah: Numbers 25:1–9 where Israel engaged in sexual immorality with Moabite women and were judged severely by God. This incident is foundational to Paul’s argument, and it’s rich with Torah parallels. Exodus 20:14 – The Seventh Commandment though technically referring to marital infidelity, this commandment is the ethical backbone against sexual immorality in Torah law. Leviticus 18 – Laws of Sexual Purity this chapter outlines prohibited sexual relationships, emphasizing holiness and separation from the practices of Egypt and Canaan. Deuteronomy 23:17–18 – Cult Prostitution Forbidden, “There shall be no cult prostitute of the daughters of Israel…” This law directly opposes the kind of sexual idolatry seen in Numbers 25. Paul’s use of this Torah episode isn’t just historical, it’s theological. He’s saying: “Don’t repeat the mistakes of your spiritual ancestors. Their physical acts had spiritual consequences.” It’s a sobering reminder that immorality isn’t just personal, it’s communal and covenantal. This is how Paul and the NT teaches Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
