Hebrews 10:25

Hebrews 10:25
10:25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near. (NASB)

The Torah contains several foundational principles that parallel the NT call to “exhort one another” in Hebrews 10:25. While the Greek word parakaleō (παρακαλέω) in Hebrews implies urging, encouraging, and comforting, the Torah embeds this concept in covenantal responsibility, communal accountability, and moral exhortation. – Torah Parallels to Exhort One Another – Rebuke as Covenant Love — Leviticus 19:17 “You shall not hate your brother in your heart. You shall surely rebuke your neighbor, and not bear sin because of him.” The Hebrew הוֹכֵחַ תּוֹכִיחַ implies a double imperative: rebuke with clarity and purpose. This is not condemnation, but loving exhortation to prevent sin and restore righteousness. Communal Responsibility — Numbers 16 (Korah’s Rebellion) Moses and Aaron plead with the people to separate from the rebels, warning them of impending judgment. Their exhortation is urgent, corrective, and rooted in preserving covenant integrity. Encouragement in Leadership — Deuteronomy 1:38 “Encourage him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.” God commands Moses to strengthen Joshua, this models spiritual encouragement as a leadership duty. Call to Choose Life — Deuteronomy 30:19–20 “…I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life…” Moses exhorts the people to make covenantal choices, not passively, but with urgency and clarity. This is a national-level exhortation rooted in love and destiny. Public Torah Reading — Deuteronomy 31:12–13 “…Gather the people…that they may hear and learn…and observe to do all the words of this law.” The communal reading of Torah is itself an act of exhortation, reminding, urging, and aligning the people with God’s commands. Hebrews 10:25 urges believers to exhort one another “as you see the Day approaching.” We note that in both the NT and the Torah the exhortation is not optional, it’s a sacred duty rooted in love, truth, and covenant fidelity. This is how the Author of the book of Hebrews taught Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
