Bits of Torah Truths – Torah Concept in the NT: Let the Thief Work Instead of Stealing – Episode 541

Ephesians 4:28

Ephesians 4:28
4:28 He who steals must steal no longer; but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good, so that he will have something to share with one who has need. (NASB)

The Torah emphasizes honest labor, rejecting theft, and generosity, which aligns with Ephesians 4:28 “Let the thief steal no more, but rather let him labor, working with his hands, that he may have to give to others.” Here are some strong parallels: Exodus 20:15 “You shall not steal.” This is one of the Ten Commandments, establishing theft as a direct violation of God’s law. Leviticus 6:1-5 This passage outlines restitution for theft, requiring the thief to return what was stolen and add an additional fifth as compensation. Deuteronomy 24:19-21 “When you harvest your field, do not go back for what you missed. Leave it for the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow.” This alludes to how one should work for their food, not steal, and the scripture teaches generosity and ensuring that those in need receive help. These passages show that the Torah promotes honest labor, restitution, and generosity, much like Paul’s teaching in Ephesians. This is how Paul and the NT text taught Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
