What Paul writes in Ephesians 4:26 “Let not the sun go down on your wrath” is a NT exhortation whose ethical and emotional discipline has strong thematic parallels in the Torah. Leviticus 19:17-18 – Rebuke and forgiveness – “You shall not hate your brother in your heart… You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge… but you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” This passage urges internal resolution and relational repair. Exodus 22:26-27 – Timely restoration – “If you take your neighbor’s cloak as a pledge, return it to him before sunset…” While not about anger, it emphasizes daily closure and restoration before nightfall. Genesis 4:6-7 – Mastering emotion – God warns Cain: “Why are you angry?… sin is crouching at the door… but you must master it.” This speaks to emotional control before sin takes root. Deuteronomy 24:15 – Justice before sundown – “You shall give him his wages before the sun sets…” Again, the motif of resolving obligations before day’s end. The Torah doesn’t use the exact phrase “don’t let the sun go down on your wrath,” but it consistently teaches: Timely resolution of conflict, Avoidance of grudges and vengeance, Mastery over emotional impulses, and Daily accountability and restoration. This is how Paul and the NT text taught Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
