Note that the exact metaphor “Let not your left hand know what your right hand is doing” (Matthew 6:3) is unique to the New Testament, its underlying principle “discreet, humble giving without seeking recognition” has strong thematic parallels in the Torah. 1. Deuteronomy 15:7–10 – Secret Generosity Toward the Poor – “You shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother… You shall give to him freely, and your heart shall not be grudging when you give to him…” Note here that giving is commanded without hesitation or self-interest. The focus is on the “internal disposition,” not public display. The Torah emphasizes “quiet obedience” and “compassionate action,” not performative charity. 2. Exodus 25:2 – Voluntary Offerings from the Heart – “Speak to the children of Israel, that they bring Me an offering. From every man whose heart prompts him to give…” Giving is “voluntary and heartfelt,” not coerced or done for show. The offering is between the giver and God, mirroring the secrecy and sincerity Jesus emphasizes. Notice how Matthew 6:3 may reflect a “Hebrew idiom” or “Semitic hyperbole” a vivid way to say, “keep your giving private.” In Jewish tradition, “anonymous charity” (matan beseter) is considered the highest form of giving, as taught by Maimonides centuries later. This is how Yeshua and the NT taught Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
