Romans 6:12
לָכֵן, אַל יִמְשֹׁל הַחֵטְא בְּגוּפְכֶם בֶּן הַתְּמוּתָה וְאַל יַכְנִיעַ אֶתְכֶם לְתַאֲווֹתָיו.

The text in Romans 6:12 “Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof” is a call to “moral discipline and spiritual sovereignty over bodily impulses.” While this phrasing is distinctly Pauline, the Torah contains “deeply resonant parallels” that emphasize resisting sin, mastering desire, and aligning the body with divine instruction. 1. Genesis 4:7 – Mastering Sin“Sin is crouching at the door; its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.” Sin is personified as a force seeking dominion, just as Paul describes it. The Torah urges “active mastery” not passive tolerance. This is the earliest and clearest Torah articulation of resisting sin’s reign. 2. Leviticus 18:1–5 – Guarding Bodily Conduct – “You shall not do as they do in the land of Egypt… You shall keep My statutes and My judgments, by which a man may live…” Bodily behavior is governed by divine law, not cultural norms or lusts. The Torah frames obedience as a “life-giving discipline” not mere ritual. 3. Deuteronomy 6:5–6 – Whole-Person Devotion“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.” The body is not neutral; it’s a vessel for covenantal love and obedience. Paul’s call to resist sin in the body echoes Torah’s call to “total embodied devotion.” This is how Paul and the NT text taught Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
