The concept in Matthew 19:6 “What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder” has strong thematic and legal parallels in the Torah, especially in the way marriage is treated as a sacred, covenantal bond. 1. Genesis 2:24 – The Foundational Marriage Bond – “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” Marriage is a divine union “one flesh” not easily dissolved. This verse is directly quoted by Yeshua in Matthew 19:5, showing continuity with Torah. It frames marriage as a “God-ordained covenant” not a casual contract. 2. Deuteronomy 24:1–4 – The Legal Framework for Divorce – “If a man takes a wife and it happens that she does not find favor in his eyes… he writes her a bill of divorce…” The Torah permits divorce, but with strict legal procedure (the “get”). Yeshua critiques the misuse of this allowance, emphasizing that it was a concession due to “hardness of heart” (Matthew 19:8). The Torah’s structure implies that “divorce is serious and irreversible” especially if the woman remarries. 3. Numbers 30 – Vows and Covenant Responsibility – “If a man makes a vow to the Lord… he shall not break his word.” Marriage is viewed as a “vow before God” and breaking it is akin to breaking a sacred promise. This supports the idea that human authority should not casually dissolve what God has sanctified. This is how Yeshua and the NT text taught Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
