1 John 2:24–25
2:24 As for you, let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father. 2:25 This is the promise which He Himself made to us: eternal life. (NASB)

The Torah lays the foundation for what John is saying, “Let Eternal life abide in you” (1 John 2:24-25) The Torah concept of abiding in divine life through covenantal obedience and communion is the source for John’s exhortation. Abiding in What Was Heard from the Beginning: Note the following, Deuteronomy 6:6–9 “These words… shall be on your heart… you shall teach them diligently to your children…” Deuteronomy 11:18–21 “Lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul… that your days may be multiplied…” and Exodus 19:5–6 “If you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant… you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests…” These things describe how the Torah emphasizes internalizing and abiding in God’s word as the path to covenantal life and blessing. The Promise of Life Through Obedience: In Leviticus 18:5 we read “You shall therefore keep My statutes… which if a man does, he shall live by them.” In Deuteronomy 30:19–20 “Choose life… by loving the Lord your God, obeying His voice, and holding fast to Him.” And in Genesis 3:22 the Tree of Life is withheld after sin, implying that eternal life was once accessible through obedience. Note how “Life” in Torah is often physical and communal, but it also hints at ongoing covenantal vitality, a precursor to John’s idea of eternal life. Dwelling with God / God Dwelling in You: Exodus 25:8 “Let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them.” Leviticus 26:11–12 “I will set My tabernacle among you… I will walk among you and be your God.” Deuteronomy 30:14 “The word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it.” Note how the Torah’s vision of God dwelling among His people mirrors what John is saying. John’s call to let eternal life abide in you echoes the Torah’s invitation to internalize God’s word, walk in covenantal obedience, and dwell in divine presence. This is how John and the NT text taught Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
