2 Timothy 4:5
2 Timothy 4:5
4:5 But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. (NASB)
The concept of enduring afflictions as mentioned in 2 Timothy 4:5 finds several parallels in the Torah. For example, Abraham endured numerous trials and tests of faith such as the binding of Isaac (Genesis 22:1-19), where God tested his obedience and trust. Joseph’s life also a profound story of enduring afflictions. Sold into slavery by his brothers (Genesis 37:18-28), being falsely accused and imprisoned (Genesis 39), Joseph faced many hardships. Yet, he remained faithful to God which ultimately led to his rise to power in Egypt and the salvation of his family during the famine (Genesis 41-45). These stories from the Torah emphasize enduring hardships with faith and trust in God’s plan, much like the exhortation in 2 Timothy 4:5. They highlight that perseverance through trials is a central theme in the relationship between God and His people. This enduring faithfulness is mirrored in the NTt, where believers are encouraged to remain steadfast and resilient in the face of difficulties, trusting in God’s ultimate plan and purpose. This is how Paul taught Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
