Matthew 7:7–11
7:7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 7:8 “For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 7:9 “Or what man is there among you who, when his son asks for a loaf, will give him a stone? 7:10 “Or if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he? 7:11 “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him! The text Matthew 7:7-11 “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you…” is about persistent, trusting petition to God. While the Torah doesn’t use this exact triad of verbs, it contains strong thematic parallels: God invites us to call upon Him, promises to be found when sought, and responds to those who approach Him faithfully.
– Torah Parallels to “Ask, Seek, Knock” –
- Ask → God Responds Exodus 16:4 Israel asks for food in the wilderness; God provides manna daily. Numbers 11:2 When the people cry out because of fire, Moses prays, and God quenches it. Deuteronomy 4:7 This is a direct Torah parallel to the idea that asking brings divine response.
- Seek → You Will Find Deuteronomy 4:29 “But from there you will seek the LORD your God and you will find Him, if you search after Him with all your heart and soul.” This is the clearest Torah echo of Matthew’s “seek and you shall find.”
- Knock → Doors Open, while “knocking” is metaphorical in Matthew, Torah parallels appear in approaching God’s presence, Exodus 33:7–11 Moses enters the Tent of Meeting, and God speaks with him “face to face.” Numbers 27:21 Joshua is told to stand before Eleazar the priest to inquire of God. These passages show that when Israel or its leaders’ “approach” (knock), God opens access to His guidance.
Note the condensed synthesis from the Torah:
Ask → God hears and provides (Exod. 16, Num. 11, Deut. 4:7),
Seek → God can be found (Deut. 4:29),
Knock → God grants access to His presence (Exod. 33, Num. 27).
Matthew 7:7-11 is not introducing a new idea but condensing Torah themes into a memorable sequence. It reflects the covenantal assurance: God is near, responsive, and accessible to those who approach Him sincerely. This is how Yeshua taught Torah in the NT, the Torah has not passed away!
