It\u2019s no secret the religious landscape in America \u201chas\u201d<\/span><\/em> and \u201cis\u201d<\/span><\/em> in the process of going through a major change due to the shift in the face of theologies being developed for the purpose of harmonizing biblical faith with modern culture.\u00a0 For example, fewer and fewer Americans are self-identifying as Christians, where more and more are identifying as the religiously unaffiliated.\u00a0 Many are walking away from the faith they grew up with, the faith of their parents, and are going through a major shift in their core beliefs in order to \u201cfit in.\u201d<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 This I believe is the result of growing up with little to no teaching on how the scientific and sociological events of the world interact with the age-old Scriptures found in the Torah, the Prophets, the Writings (\u05ea\u05e0\u05da) and the NT.\u00a0 This led to the feeling that the Scriptures are unconvincing, uninspiring and irrelevant for today.\u00a0 This may be in part why certain theologies have been developed stating that the Tanach is not relative today as opposed to the NT.\u00a0 Or even the lack of the movement of the power of God in the life of a believer leading to the theology of dispensationalism.\u00a0 Men tend to look more critically at the Scriptures developing theologies to harmonize God\u2019s word with their beliefs, as opposed to being more critical about one\u2019s own beliefs and life to bring their minds unto the obedience of the faith (Acts 6:7-7:1<\/span><\/em>).\u00a0 These modern changing times require us to dig deeper into the Scriptures, for the purpose of understanding what the Lord has for us.\u00a0 His Word is applicable for our lives even in these post modern times.\u00a0 Note in this weeks Torah portion, Parashat Lech Lecha, the significance of Abram being called out from his people and his family, to go to a new land, and to learn about the One True God, these things would have turned any man\u2019s theology upside down, especially that which Abram knew, polytheism.\u00a0 In Parashat Lech Lecha, (Bereshit \/ Genesis 12:1-17:27<\/span><\/em>) the Lord God calls Abram to leave his land, to leave his father\u2019s house, and to leave his people (\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b9\u05d0\u05de\u05b6\u05e8 \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05d5\u05b9\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b6\u05dc-\u05d0\u05b7\u05d1\u05b0\u05e8\u05b8\u05dd \u05dc\u05b6\u05da\u05b0-\u05dc\u05b0\u05da\u05b8 \u05de\u05b5\u05d0\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05e6\u05b0\u05da\u05b8 \u05d5\u05bc\u05de\u05b4\u05de\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05dc\u05b7\u05d3\u05b0\u05ea\u05bc\u05b0\u05da\u05b8 \u05d5\u05bc\u05de\u05b4\u05d1\u05bc\u05b5\u05d9\u05ea \u05d0\u05b8\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05da\u05b8 \u05d0\u05b6\u05dc-\u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b8\u05e8\u05b6\u05e5 \u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05e8 \u05d0\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05d0\u05b6\u05da\u05bc) and go to a new land and become a nation of people, and to learn a new religion. These events are very significant and God\u2019s opening words to Abram provide for us a future expectation of His word being applicable (obligatory) for all peoples!\u00a0 God\u2019s Word being obligatory for all peoples is something not everyone is willing to accept, but this is the future expectation that has been laid out by all of Scripture (i.e. Isaiah 2<\/span><\/em>).<\/p>\n This week we are looking at the Scriptures from Bereshit \/ Genesis 12:1-5<\/span><\/em>.<\/p>\n Bereshit \/ Genesis 12:1-5<\/span><\/em><\/strong> \u05d0\u00a0\u00a0 out of the text when the Lord promises to bless Abram and make him into a great and mighty nation (\u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b6\u05e2\u05b6\u05e9\u05b0\u05b9\u05da\u05b8 \u05dc\u05b0\u05d2\u05d5\u05b9\u05d9 \u05d2\u05bc\u05b8\u05d3\u05d5\u05b9\u05dc) stating that those who bless him the Lord will bless, and those who curse him the Lord will curse (\u05d5\u05b7\u05d0\u05b2\u05d1\u05b8\u05e8\u05b0\u05db\u05b8\u05d4 \u05de\u05b0\u05d1\u05b8\u05e8\u05b2\u05db\u05b6\u05d9\u05da\u05b8 \u05d5\u05bc\u05de\u05b0\u05e7\u05b7\u05dc\u05bc\u05b6\u05dc\u05b0\u05da\u05b8 \u05d0\u05b8\u05d0\u05b9\u05e8).\u00a0 Note reading the MT, when the Lord called Abraham, He said in him all the families of the earth will be blessed (\u05d5\u05b0\u05e0\u05b4\u05d1\u05b0\u05e8\u05b0\u05db\u05d5\u05bc \u05d1\u05b0\u05da\u05b8 \u05db\u05bc\u05b9\u05dc \u05de\u05b4\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05e4\u05bc\u05b0\u05d7\u05b9\u05ea \u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b2\u05d3\u05b8\u05de\u05b8\u05d4).\u00a0 It is interesting here in the Hebrew text, the word Ha\u2019adamah (\u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b2\u05d3\u05b8\u05de\u05b8\u05d4, the ground) is used to indicate that all of the families of the Earth will be blessed, and not just those who live in \u05d0\u05e8\u05e5 \u05d9\u05e9\u05e8\u05d0\u05dc (the land of Israel).\u00a0 The Scriptures say \u201call of the families of the ground (\u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b2\u05d3\u05b8\u05de\u05b8\u05d4)\u201d<\/span><\/em> taking from the meaning that God created man from the dust of the earth (\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e6\u05b6\u05e8 \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b8\u05d3\u05b8\u05dd \u05e2\u05b8\u05e4\u05b8\u05e8 \u05de\u05b4\u05df-\u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b2\u05d3\u05b8\u05de\u05b8\u05d4) in Bereshit \/ Genesis 2:7<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0 The rabbis interpret this to say according to the Aramaic Targum (Onkelos), all the \u201cseed of the earth\u201d<\/span><\/em> will be blessed (\u05d5\u05b0\u05d9\u05b4\u05ea\u05b0\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05e8\u05b0\u05db\u05d5\u05bc\u05df \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05d3\u05b4\u05d9\u05dc\u05b8\u05da\u05b0 \u05db\u05bc\u05b8\u05dc \u05d6\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05e2\u05b2\u05d9\u05b7\u05ea \u05d0\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05e2\u05b8\u05d0).\u00a0 In the covenant that God is making with Abram, the Lord states a promise not only to Abram but also to his descendants (Israel), and to all the world (the non-Jewish peoples).\u00a0 The reason being, we were all created in the image of God!\u00a0 It is within these few verses of the Abrahamic Covenant (Bereshit \/ Genesis 12:1-3<\/span><\/em>) that all other covenants find their basis.\u00a0 The Lord has chosen and is in the process of choosing a people for Himself!\u00a0 What is the Significance of the Lord choosing a people unto Himself?\u00a0 According to the prophetic literature, the significance is for Israel to be a light unto all the nations (Isaiah 2<\/span><\/em>).<\/p>\n Continuing to read the narrative in the Torah, the Mosaic covenant expands upon the Abrahamic covenant of the Promised Land (Israel) and establishes a dwelling place, the Tabernacle, where He (God) will make His name known.\u00a0 In the prophets, the Davidic covenant is related to the issue of prophet, priest, and king, and the New Covenant, in the Apostolic Writings, relates to the completion of the promise of God to bless all the families of the earth in His Messiah.\u00a0 Because of these things, there is a future expectation of the nations coming and worshiping before the Lord.\u00a0 If there is a future expectation of the nations coming and worshiping the Lord, the mechanism for such a thing happening is by entering into and becoming a part of God\u2019s Family.\u00a0 The Scriptures describe the Torah as being given to Israel and of Israel being a light unto the nations (gentiles).\u00a0 What does this look like with regard to those who were to have the Torah taken to them from a faithful people (Israel), a people who were called to lead the nations (Isaiah 2<\/span><\/em>)?<\/p>\n In the prophetic literature, such as in the book of Isaiah, we read of the holy mountain of the Lord and of all the peoples going to Jerusalem to worship the Lord at Zion.\u00a0 The expectation is for all the people to give thanks and to praise the Lord God in heaven.\u00a0 In a similar way, the psalmist calls out for us to give thanks, by bringing to memory what the Lord has done.\u00a0 He states that the praise of the Lord and of His glory, are found in the memory of what He has done, \u05d4\u00a0\u00a0 \u05d6\u05b4\u05db\u05b0\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc \u05e0\u05b4\u05e4\u05b0\u05dc\u05b0\u05d0\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea\u05b8\u05d9\u05d5 \u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05e8 \u05e2\u05b8\u05e9\u05b8\u05b9\u05d4 \u05de\u05b9\u05e4\u05b0\u05ea\u05b8\u05d9\u05d5 \u05d5\u05bc\u05de\u05b4\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05e4\u05bc\u05b0\u05d8\u05b5\u05d9-\u05e4\u05b4\u05d9\u05d5:\u00a0 \u05d5\u00a0 (NASB)<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 Note again the psalmist\u2019s words stating that God\u2019s judgments are in \u201call\u201d the earth suggesting all peoples are accountable before the Lord.\u00a0 According to Parashat Bereshit, this is because we were all created in God\u2019s image.\u00a0 The Torah continually speaks to us about the importance of remembering what the Lord has done for us.<\/p>\n Devarim \/ Deuteronomy 5:15<\/span><\/em><\/strong> Devarim \/ Deuteronomy 8:2<\/span><\/em><\/strong> Devarim \/ Deuteronomy 9:7<\/span><\/em><\/strong> Note how remembering is connected to obedience to the command.\u00a0 If we forget the commands then our lives will not be pleasing to the Lord.\u00a0 The giving of the Holy Spirit of God was meant for the remembering, and empowering to overcome sin, just as Yeshua said, \u201cBut the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.\u201d (John 14:26)\u00a0 \u201cAnd when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.\u201d (Mark 13:11)<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 Remembering all the Lord God of Israel has done for us is foundational for living our lives according to the Scriptures.\u00a0 For instance, we would have no power to forgive if we forgot what the Lord God has done for us.\u00a0 Remembering what the Lord has done in the past is vital for living by faith in the future.\u00a0 The Scriptures are filled with stories of God\u2019s powerful activity in the past to spur us on to faith with a hopeful expectation of the Lord working in our lives in the future.\u00a0 It is for this reason we are told, from generation to generation, we are instructed to remember what the Lord has done.\u00a0 This is so from one generation to the next, we do not forget the love of our God!\u00a0 The Scriptures state the Lord does not forget saying, \u05d7\u00a0\u00a0 \u05d6\u05b8\u05db\u05b7\u05e8 \u05dc\u05b0\u05e2\u05d5\u05b9\u05dc\u05b8\u05dd \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05ea\u05d5\u05b9 \u05d3\u05bc\u05b8\u05d1\u05b8\u05e8 \u05e6\u05b4\u05d5\u05bc\u05b8\u05d4 \u05dc\u05b0\u05d0\u05b6\u05dc\u05b6\u05e3 \u05d3\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8: \u05d8\u00a0\u00a0 \u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05e8 \u05db\u05bc\u05b8\u05e8\u05b7\u05ea \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05d0\u05b7\u05d1\u05b0\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4\u05b8\u05dd \u05d5\u05bc\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05d1\u05d5\u05bc\u05e2\u05b8\u05ea\u05d5\u05b9 \u05dc\u05b0\u05d9\u05b4\u05e9\u05b0\u05b9\u05d7\u05b8\u05e7: \u05d9\u00a0\u00a0 \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05d3\u05b6\u05d4\u05b8 \u05dc\u05b0\u05d9\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05e7\u05b9\u05d1 \u05dc\u05b0\u05d7\u05b9\u05e7 \u05dc\u05b0\u05d9\u05b4\u05e9\u05b0\u05b9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0\u05b5\u05dc \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05ea \u05e2\u05d5\u05b9\u05dc\u05b8\u05dd: \u05d9\u05d0\u00a0\u00a0 \u05dc\u05b5\u05d0\u05de\u05b9\u05e8 \u05dc\u05b0\u05da\u05b8 \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea\u05bc\u05b5\u05df \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05d0\u05b6\u05e8\u05b6\u05e5 \u05db\u05bc\u05b0\u05e0\u05b8\u05e2\u05b7\u05df \u05d7\u05b6\u05d1\u05b6\u05dc \u05e0\u05b7\u05d7\u05b2\u05dc\u05b7\u05ea\u05b0\u05db\u05b6\u05dd: 105:8 He has remembered His covenant forever, The word which He commanded to a thousand generations, 105:9 The covenant which He made with Abraham, And His oath to Isaac. 105:10 Then He confirmed it to Jacob for a statute, To Israel as an everlasting covenant, 105:11 Saying, \u2018To you I will give the land of Canaan As the portion of your inheritance,\u2019 (NASB)<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 The Aramaic Targum states, \u05d7\u00a0 \u05d3\u05db\u05d9\u05e8 \u05dc\u05e2\u05dc\u05dd \u05e7\u05d9\u05d9\u05de\u05d9\u05d4 \u05e4\u05ea\u05d2\u05dd \u05e4\u05e7\u05d9\u05d3 \u05dc\u05d0\u05dc\u05e4\u05d9 \u05d3\u05e8\u05d9\u05df\u05c3\u00a0 \u05d8\u00a0 \u05d3\u05d9 \u05d2\u05d6\u05e8 \u05e2\u05dd \u05d0\u05d1\u05e8\u05d4\u05dd \u05d5\u05e7\u05d9\u05d9\u05de\u05d9\u05d4 \u05dc\u05d9\u05e6\u05d7\u05e7\u05c3\u00a0 \u05d9\u00a0 \u05d5\u05e7\u05d9\u05d9\u05de\u05e0\u05d4 \u05dc\u05d9\u05e2\u05e7\u05d1 \u05dc\u05d2\u05d6\u05d9\u05e8\u05d0 \u05dc\u05d9\u05e9\u05e8\u05d0\u05dc \u05e7\u05d9\u05d9\u05dd \u05e2\u05dc\u05dd\u05c3\u00a0 \u05d9\u05d0\u00a0 \u05dc\u05de\u05d9\u05de\u05e8 \u05dc\u05da \u05d0\u05ea\u05df \u05d9\u05ea \u05d0\u05e8\u05e2\u05d0 \u05d3\u05db\u05e0\u05e2\u05df \u05e2\u05d3\u05d1 \u05d0\u05d7\u05e1\u05e0\u05ea\u05db\u05d5\u05df\u05c3 105:8 He remembered his covenant forever; he commanded a word for a thousand generations. 105:9\u00a0 That which he made with Abraham, and his covenant with Isaac. 105:10 And he established it for Jacob as a decree, for Israel as a perpetual covenant. 105:11 Saying, \u201cTo you I will give the land of Canaan as the lot of your inheritance.\u201d (EMC)<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 What this teaches us is that the Lord keeps His everlasting covenant and He remembers what He had done in the past, which effects the future.\u00a0 Note that the Torah teaches us having direct contact with God does not necessarily have a lasting impact on people.\u00a0 For example, consider how the people run out, shortly after Sinai, to worship the Golden Calf.\u00a0 Their commitment to the Lord and to His word was more of a fleeting momentary thing, in the emotion of the moment they accepted God\u2019s Mitzvot, but through the course of a few short days, a month, or more, they turned to do as they wanted and created and served a false god.\u00a0 Why do you think the people did this, especially after having seen the great signs and wonders of God to deliver them from Egypt?\u00a0 In the rabbinic literature, the rabbis compare Moshe and Ezra, saying Ezra was worthy of giving the Torah to Israel had Moses not preceded him (Talmud Bavli Sanhedrin 21b<\/span><\/em>).\u00a0 The comparison comes by reason of the people who returned from captivity in Babylon, and the parallel of the people coming from captivity in Egypt.\u00a0 Both sets of peoples did not have God\u2019s word, and so both presented themselves, one in Jerusalem under Ezra, and one before Sinai under Moshe.\u00a0 Both groups accepted the Torah as a way of life.\u00a0 The assembly of people in Jerusalem however seemed to make a whole-hearted covenant with God as compared to the people\u2019s acceptance of the Torah at Sinai. One major difference between the assembly in Jerusalem as compared to the one at Sinai is that, as Ezra read the Torah, there were men of learning, who knew Hebrew and Aramaic and who explained the Scriptures \u201cso that the people understand it\u201d (Nehemiah 8:7-13)<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0 An important thing to note is that having heard the word of God, the people rush out afterwards to perform one of the commands they had just heard.\u00a0 The difference is that those who were in Jerusalem appear to be taking on the God\u2019s Word for themselves, making it their own, and integrating God\u2019s word into their lives.\u00a0 This was not what took place in the lives of the people at Sinai.\u00a0 Remember, in the Torah there was the threat of death to those who would reject the Torah, and life to those who would accept it.\u00a0 Note that no covenant under Jewish law itself is valid if accepted under a threat.\u00a0 Therefore, it was by free-will the covenant was made with the people where in Ezra\u2019s case the people \u201casked\u201d to have the law read to them, and the leaders helped the people to understand God\u2019s word, and went out to perform the command, meaning they sought to live God\u2019s word, to put it into practice.\u00a0 Are we being taught this today?\u00a0 Is this being emphasized in churches today?<\/p>\n The message of the Torah is for all mankind and the Lord desires that we seek Him in His words, to draw near, and to walk in His footsteps by living our lives for Him according to His word.\u00a0 The rabbis say that before the Lord gave the Torah to Israel, He had offered it to the other nations, but they refused it.\u00a0 In addition, there is a particular significance to the place the Torah was given to Israel, the Lord revealed it in the \u201cextraterritorial desert,\u201d whereby contained in this act of giving Torah, He had simultaneously given His word in all the 70 languages, so that men of all nations would have a right to it.\u00a0 The rabbis teach a universalism of the Torah for all peoples, which is coupled to the teaching of the inseparability of Israel and the Torah.\u00a0 One rabbi held that the concept of Israel existed in God\u2019s mind even before He created the Torah. Yet, were it not for her accepting the Torah, Israel would not be \u201cchosen,\u201d<\/span><\/em> nor would she be different from all the idolatrous nations.\u00a0 Saadiah Gaon (a rationalist) expounded on these rabbinic teachings in a rationalist way stating that the ethical and religious-intellectual beliefs imparted by the Torah are all attainable by human reason.\u00a0 He held that the Torah is divisible into two parts, (i) commandments which, in addition to being revealed, are demanded by reason (e.g., prohibitions of murder, fornication, theft, lying), and (ii) commandments whose authority is revelation alone (e.g., Sabbath and dietary laws), but which generally are understandable in terms of some personal or social benefit attained by their performance.\u00a0 The rationalist opinion, which is also a modern approach in many ways to God\u2019s word, is that the Shabbat and the Kashrut have no spiritual benefits to their performance.\u00a0 In the period between Saadiah Gaon and Maimonides, most Jewish writers who speculated on the nature of the Torah continued in this rationalist tradition.\u00a0 We can see today in the church, this rationalist approach is also employed on certain Scriptures, those that are believed to not apply as opposed to those that are believed to apply to life.\u00a0 I conclude this is the result of one living a theology, as opposed to living what is taught in the Scriptures.\u00a0 Do you know the difference between teaching a theology as opposed to teaching Scripture?<\/p>\n This is the manifestation of God\u2019s power today, to work in our lives (Beresthit \/ Genesis 12:7<\/span><\/em>) by the choosing of a people and the giving of God\u2019s word leads to the repentant expectation for His people (Israel) and for the nations (goyim).\u00a0 The point of the Lord choosing a special people is that Abraham led by example, as described by Rashi on Bereshit \/ genesis 12:5<\/span><\/em>.<\/p>\n Rashi in Bereshit \/ Genesis 12:5 Part 1<\/span><\/em><\/strong> Rashi interprets Parashat Lech Lecha, to mean that Abraham ministered to men, and Sarah ministered to the women, regarding the Lord God Almighty.\u00a0 They made converts, speaking to men and women about the goodness of God and His ways, which means they were convincing people to follow in God\u2019s foot steps.\u00a0 Radak also holds a similar interpretation saying the following.<\/p>\n Radak on Bereshit \/ Genesis 12:5 Part 3<\/span><\/em><\/strong> Radak states, the word \u05e2\u05e9\u05d5 (Asav) from the root \u05e2\u05b8\u05e9\u05c2\u05b8\u05d4 (Asah) meaning he worked or labored, being successful in causing men to turn to monotheism from polytheism.\u00a0 Isn\u2019t it interesting how Radak states Abraham was an active evangelist?\u00a0 Abraham was actively seeking for men to join with him in worship, service, and obedience to God\u2019s way of life in righteousness, holiness, justice, and truth.\u00a0 This interpretation is also consistent with Shney Luchot HaBrit, Vayikra Torah Ohr 20<\/span><\/em>:<\/p>\n Shney Luchot HaBrit, Vayikra, Torah Ohr 20<\/span><\/em><\/strong> Abraham was actively seeking to share his faith with others.\u00a0 Another commentary Maaseh Nissim on Pesach Haggadah, Magid, The Four Sons 3:3<\/span><\/em>, also has a similar conclusion saying the following:<\/p>\n Maaseh Nissim on Pesach Haggadah, Magid, The Four Sons 3:3<\/span><\/em><\/strong> The rabbis describe the function of faith in our lives.\u00a0 We are called to bring our faith to the nations, to share God\u2019s Word, His righteousness, His holiness, His justice, and His truth to all who will listen.\u00a0 The Lord has chosen a people unto Himself, a faithful people to lead the nations.\u00a0 This is the major premise that comes out of the text when the Lord promises to bless Abram and make him into a great and mighty nation (\u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b6\u05e2\u05b6\u05e9\u05b0\u05b9\u05da\u05b8 \u05dc\u05b0\u05d2\u05d5\u05b9\u05d9 \u05d2\u05bc\u05b8\u05d3\u05d5\u05b9\u05dc).\u00a0 If you are not sharing your faith with others, you are not functioning in the manner Abraham functioned in regard to his faith!\u00a0 This is a consistent theme throughout all of Scripture of love, repentance, and obedience.<\/p>\n The Jewish commentaries speaks of the Mitzvot and the word Asah (\u05e2\u05b8\u05e9\u05c2\u05b8\u05d4) as being trans-formative, as it is related to Abraham and Sarah sharing their faith and bringing souls into the belief of the One True God.\u00a0 This is achieved by the telling and retelling of the stories from the Bible, of how the Lord loves us and sent His Messiah to save us from our sins.\u00a0 Is this not how the Torah directs us to the Messiah, through repentance and turning from sin?<\/p>\n In Devarim \/ Deuteronomy 4:1<\/span><\/em>, Moshe stated the following:<\/p>\n Devarim \/ Deuteronomy 4:1<\/span><\/em><\/strong> According to the words in Devarim \/ Deuteronomy 4:1<\/span><\/em>, the people are to remember the extraordinary power of God to deliver them in both mercy and judgment towards the nation that come against the children of Abraham (Note: those who bless him the Lord will bless, and those who curse him the Lord will curse, \u05d5\u05b7\u05d0\u05b2\u05d1\u05b8\u05e8\u05b0\u05db\u05b8\u05d4 \u05de\u05b0\u05d1\u05b8\u05e8\u05b2\u05db\u05b6\u05d9\u05da\u05b8 \u05d5\u05bc\u05de\u05b0\u05e7\u05b7\u05dc\u05bc\u05b6\u05dc\u05b0\u05da\u05b8 \u05d0\u05b8\u05d0\u05b9\u05e8).\u00a0 Moshe calls upon the entire assembly to keep in memory what the Lord has done, and to take heed of the Mitzvot (commands) so that they may enter into the Promises and blessings of God.\u00a0 Notice how the people of God, their conduct is very important to receiving the promises of God.\u00a0 The Torah is designed such that by the mercy of God, we are given time to perform Teshuvah (repent) and to turn back to the way of the Lord, to be obedient to the laws of God, in the land they are promised and even in the land they are living in the diaspora, and only then will His people live peacefully, with joy, and happy.\u00a0 The divine statutes and judgments were created as a guide to live by, and our happiness is dependent upon these things.<\/p>\n The Torah is for all peoples, just as we find here in this week\u2019s Torah portion in the Hebrew text on the word Ha\u2019adamah (\u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b2\u05d3\u05b8\u05de\u05b8\u05d4, the ground) used to indicate that all of the families of the Earth or in the Aramaic (Targum Onkelos) which states all the \u201cseed of the earth\u201d will be blessed (\u05d5\u05b0\u05d9\u05b4\u05ea\u05b0\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05e8\u05b0\u05db\u05d5\u05bc\u05df \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05d3\u05b4\u05d9\u05dc\u05b8\u05da\u05b0 \u05db\u05bc\u05b8\u05dc \u05d6\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05e2\u05b2\u05d9\u05b7\u05ea \u05d0\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05e2\u05b8\u05d0).\u00a0 In the covenant that God is making with Abram, the Lord states a promise not only to Abram but also to his descendants (Israel), and to all the world (the non-Jewish peoples).\u00a0 In the Apostolic Writings, it is revealed in the Messiah Yeshua, and by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we are empowered in the happiness and peacefulness of God to overcome sin in our lives.\u00a0 The Torah is related to the worship and service of the Lord God of Israel, all of which are obligatory and the duty of all men to obey!\u00a0 Even the nations will receive recompense on both the individual and at the national level for the disobedience and their servitude to unrighteousness and injustice in this world.\u00a0 These concepts are consistent with those of the prophets, (i,.e, Hosea and Jeremiah) that true faith rests upon the knowledge of God, where the people sinned because of their not understanding the heart of what the Lord God wants for their lives, and thus perishing for a lack of knowledge. (Hosea 4:6<\/span>)\u00a0 Our existence depends upon whether we are striving for God\u2019s ways, as opposed to sinning and neglecting what the Lord wants for us.\u00a0 Are you living under the modern theology that says\u201cAh Grace saves me, that is all I need!\u201d?\u00a0 The preservation of our lives and our identity as the people of God is dependent upon whether we place at the center of our lives the Lord God of Israel and His Messiah Yeshua and strive to live for the righteousness of God. (Matthew 6:33<\/span><\/em>)\u00a0 Take note of what Yeshua said in Matthew 6:33<\/span><\/em>!\u00a0 The fact of the matter is Israel preserved her identity among the nations and survived the influences which overwhelmed the nations by her faith in the Lord and obedience to the Torah.\u00a0 The same may be said of us in this modern age and\u00a0 the peoples falling away from the truth of the Scriptures!\u00a0 The covenant that we have in Yeshua the Messiah establishes who we are in the Torah of God as the people and children of Faith! (Romans 3:31<\/span><\/em>)\u00a0 Do you have faith?\u00a0 Do you live your faith?\u00a0 These are two very important questions that have a direct impact on your salvation!<\/p>\n

\n \u05d0\u05e9\u05e8 \u05e2\u05e9\u05d5 \u05d1\u05d7\u05e8\u05df [THE SOULS] THAT THEY HAD GOTTEN (literally, made) IN HARAN \u2014 The souls which he had brought beneath the sheltering wings of the Shechinah. Abraham converted the men and Sarah converted the women and Scripture accounts it unto them as if they had made them. However, the real sense of the text is that it refers to the men-servants and to the maidservants whom they had acquired for themselves. The word \u201c\u05e2\u05e9\u05d4\u201d is used here as (in Genesis 31:1), \u201che has acquired (\u05e2\u05e9\u05d4) all this wealth\u201d, and (Numbers 24:8), \u201cAnd Israel acquires (\u05e2\u05d5\u05e9\u05d4) wealth\u201d \u2014 an expression for acquiring and amassing.<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
\n \u05d5\u05d0\u05ea \u05d4\u05e0\u05e4\u05e9 \u05d0\u05e9\u05e8 \u05e2\u05e9\u05d5 \u05d1\u05d7\u05e8\u05df, the male and female servants they had acquired in Charan. The word \u05e2\u05e9\u05d5 must be understood as similar to Deuteronomy 8:17 \u05e2\u05e9\u05d4 \u05dc\u05d9 \u05d0\u05ea \u05db\u05dc \u05d4\u05d7\u05d9\u05dc \u05d4\u05d6\u05d4, \u201chas gotten me this wealth.\u201d According to Onkelos, the word \u05e2\u05e9\u05d5 refers to the people whom Avram and Lot had succeeded in bringing back to monotheism, i.e. the same religion as that professed by Avram. Lot too, professed the belief in the one and only invisible G\u2019d, the Creator of the universe Lot did not merely join Avram because he was his uncle and much younger than his grandfather, but he shared his religious beliefs and was active as an evangelist for that faith himself. This is the reason why the Torah wrote the word \u05e2\u05e9\u05d5 in the plural mode instead of the singular. According to our sages (Bereshit Rabbah 39:14) the plural mode of the word \u05e2\u05e9\u05d5 is meant to prove that both Avram and Sarai, each were active in converting their respective friends to monotheism. The use of the root \u05e2\u05e9\u05d4 to describe such \u201cconversion,\u201d is also found in 1 Samuel 12:6 \u05d0\u05e9\u05e8 \u05e2\u05e9\u05d4 \u05de\u05e9\u05d4 \u05d0\u05ea \u05de\u05e9\u05d4 \u05d5\u05d0\u05ea \u05d0\u05d4\u05e8\u05df, where it refers to G\u2019d having been the mentor of both Moses and Aaron.<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
\n Our patriarch Abraham, inasmuch as he personified absolute faith in G\u2019d, comprised within himself all the spiritual powers connected with the soul. The Torah testifies that while still in Charan he and Sarah \u201cmade\u201d souls, created people who possessed spiritual values, i.e. a soul (Genesis 12:5).<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
\n Why does the verse that is quoted (Exodus 13:8) in the answer to the wicked child say, \u201cIt is because of this that God did for me when I went forth from Egypt\u201d? God did not command the individual but the entire community at the time of the Exodus. It should have said, \u201cThat WE went forth from Egypt\u201d since the entire people of Israel were commanded to observe the Mitzvot as a result of the Exodus. The key expression in this verse is \u201cWhat the Lord did for me.\u201d The Hebrew word for \u201cdid,\u201d Asah has an implication of acquiring or taking possession of something. It also has a connotation of transformation, as in the case of Genesis, 12:5, \u201cAll the souls that they made (Asu) in Haran.\u201d This phrase is understood as implying that Abraham and Sarah made souls by bringing them to a belief in one God. When our verse says, \u201cWhich the Lord did for me,\u201d it means that God gave us the commandments in order to transform us into a covenanted nation when he took us out of Egypt. It is written in the first person singular because each person was personally transformed by God\u2019s act of redemption.<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
