url=&#8221;https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lQ7z7UP3Ibk&amp;feature=youtu.be&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In this weeks reading from Parsahat Chukat (<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Bamidbar \/ Numbers 19:1-22:1<\/span><\/em>) the Lord speaks to Moshe about the \u201cred heifer\u201d regarding ritual purity.\u00a0 The entire heifer is burned to ashes, its hide, flesh, blood, and refuse, everything (<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">19:5<\/span><\/em>).\u00a0 Cedar wood, hyssop, and scarlet material are cast into the midst of the burning heifer.\u00a0 The ashes of the heifer are mixed with water and used for the removal of impurity; the water-ash mixture is used for the purification from physical uncleanness (<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">19:8-9<\/span><\/em>).\u00a0 The mitzvot on touching the dead is also given and we learn uncleanliness behaves as a transmittable communicable defilement.\u00a0 It is interesting here that the only thing that can overcome becoming unclean by death is death itself, the ashes of the red heifer.\u00a0 Might this suggest a future messianic expectation of the work of the Messiah?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The people arrived in the desert in the wilderness of Zin at a place called Kadesh.\u00a0 There was no water and so the people complained.\u00a0 Moshe brings this matter before the Lord and the Lord instructs him to take the staff and <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cspeak to the rock.\u201d<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 Moshe and Aaron take the staff and speak harshly to the people and strike the rock two times disobeying God\u2019s word.\u00a0 The Torah portion ends with a description of Israel defeating the kings of Arad and Sihon (<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">21:1<\/span><\/em>).\u00a0 After defeating the kings, the people complain because of the long journey and the Lord sends fiery serpents among them and many people died (<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">21:6<\/span><\/em>).\u00a0 Moshe set up a bronze serpent upon a staff so that everyone who looked upon the serpent would not die if they had been bitten by the serpent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the Torah, an image was set up by Moshe which is said to have healed those who looked upon it.\u00a0 When the children of Israel were marching southward to go around Edom to the east of Palestine, they began to grumble against the Lord and against Moshe concerning the manna.\u00a0 As a result, the Lord sent the <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cfiery serpents\u201d<\/span><\/em> and many died from poisonous bites.\u00a0 This led to the people\u2019s repentance, and Moshe sought the Lord in prayer about the situation.\u00a0 Moshe was told to make a pole and to lift up an image of the bronze serpent.\u00a0 Those who were bitten were to look upon the image and they would be healed of their sickness (<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Bamidbar \/ Numbers 21:4-9<\/span><\/em>).\u00a0 Later on in Israel\u2019s history, the <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cbrazen serpent\u201d<\/span><\/em> became an object of worship to Israel, and remained until Hezekiah destroyed it by breaking it into fragments according to <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">2 Kings 18:4<\/span><\/em>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>\u05e1\u05e4\u05e8 \u05d1\u05de\u05d3\u05d1\u05e8 \u05e4\u05e8\u05e7 \u05db\u05d0<\/strong><br \/>\n\u05d3\u00a0\u00a0 #0000ff;\">Bamidbar \/ Numbers 21:4-9<\/span><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">21:4 Then they set out from Mount Hor by the way of the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; and the people became impatient because of the journey. 21:5 The people spoke against God and Moses, \u2018Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this miserable food.\u2019 21:6 The Lord sent fiery serpents among the people and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died. 21:7 So the people came to Moses and said, \u2018We have sinned, because we have spoken against the Lord and you; intercede with the Lord, that He may remove the serpents from us.\u2019 And Moses interceded for the people. 21:8 Then the Lord said to Moses, \u2018Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a standard; and it shall come about, that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, he will live.\u2019 21:9 And Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on the standard; and it came about, that if a serpent bit any man, when he looked to the bronze serpent, he lived. (NASB)<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the biblical account and in general Christian interpretation, the serpent has come to be representative of the Devil, the arch enemy of God, the deceiver, the one who deceived Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.\u00a0 Based on the biblical account of the serpent at the time of the creation, the serpent, according to Judaism as described in the Talmud, the serpent stands for such evils as talebearing and defamation of character (<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Bereshit \/ Genesis 3:4-5<\/span><\/em>).\u00a0 Judaism\u2019s description of the serpent follows the actions that had occurred in the Torah account when the serpent said <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cdid God really say&#8230;\u201d<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 The Midrash on <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Bamidbar \/ Numbers 21:4-9<\/span><\/em> finds in the plague of the fiery serpents a punishment for the sins of the evil tongue (<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Bamidbar \/ Numbers 21:5<\/span><\/em>).\u00a0 The idea is that God said, <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cLet the serpent who was the first to offend by \u2018evil tongue\u2019 inflict punishment on those who were guilty of the same sin and did not profit by the serpent\u2019s example.\u201d<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 The complaint of the people in this case was the dissatisfaction with the food provision (manna).\u00a0 (<em>In an additional thought, think about the parallel of the manna, the bread from heaven, the Messiah, and the dissatisfaction of the leaders in the first century period in Yeshua.<\/em>)\u00a0 The rabbinic homiletic discussions on the manna describe the manna as having any taste desired by the person eating it, as opposed to the serpent were all things had the taste of dust, in accordance with the words, <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cAnd dust shalt you eat all the days of your life\u201d<\/span><\/em> (<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Bereshit \/ Genesis 3:14<\/span><\/em>).\u00a0 The rabbinic comparison comes by those who loathed the food which had given any taste desired, being punished by means of the creature to which everything has the same taste (see <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Midrash Rabbah on Bamidbar 19:22<\/span><\/em>).\u00a0 The <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Talmud Bavli Rosh Hashana 29a<\/span><\/em> does not take literally the words <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cEvery one who was bitten by a serpent would look at the serpent and live,\u201d<\/span><\/em> but interprets them symbolically to say that the people should look up to the God of heaven, for it is not the serpent that brings to life or puts to death, but it is God (<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Talmud Bavli Rosh Hashana 29a<\/span><\/em>).<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Talmud Bavli Rosh Hashana 29a<\/span><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Mishnah. [it is written] and it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand that Israel prevailed, etc.now did the hands of Moses wage war or crush the enemy? not so; only the text signifies that so long as Israel turned their thoughts above and subjected their hearts to their father in heaven they prevailed, but otherwise they fell. the same lesson may be taught thus. [it is written], make thee a fiery serpent and set it up on a pole, and it shall come to pass that everyone that is bitten, when he seeth it, shall live. now did the serpent kill or did the serpent keep a live? no; [what it indicates is that] when Israel turned their thoughts above and subjected their hearts to their father in heaven, they were healed, but otherwise they pined away.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A similar interpretation is found in Targum Jonathan on these verses from <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Bamidbar \/ Numbers<\/span><\/em> saying,<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> \u201cAnd Mosheh made a serpent of brass, and set it upon a place aloft; and it was, when a serpent had bitten a man, and the serpent of brass was gazed at, and his heart was intent upon the Name of the Word of the Lord, he lived. [JERUSALEM. And Mosheh made a serpent of brass, and set it upon a high place; and it was that when any one had been bitten by a serpent, and his face was uplifted in prayer unto his Father who is in heaven, and he looked upon the brazen serpent, he lived.]\u201d<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t just the looking at the serpent that healed a man.\u00a0 Salvation and healing comes by reason of having one\u2019s heart intent upon the Lord, seeking the Lord in prayer, and believing the Lord has the power to heal.\u00a0 The one who was lifted up was the facilitator, a person or thing which causes us to draw our thoughts and intentions to the One who had the power to heal, deliver, and save from death, this is the action of faith in the Lord God in heaven.<\/p>\n<p>Based upon these rabbinic concepts of having faith in the Lord as opposed to simply looking at the serpent may have been the reason behind Yeshua\u2019s use of this imagery when speaking to Nicodemus in John chapter 3.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">John 3:11-21<\/span><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> 3:11 \u2018Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know and testify of what we have seen, and you do not accept our testimony. 3:12 \u2018If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 3:13 \u2018No one has ascended into heaven, but He who descended from heaven: the Son of Man. 3:14 \u2018As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; 3:15 so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life. 3:16 \u2018For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 3:17 \u2018For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 3:18 \u2018He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 3:19 \u2018This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. 3:20 \u2018For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 3:21 \u2018But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.\u2019 (NASB)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Note how the narrative in the last few Torah portions has been related to the leadership of Moshe and Aaron and their testimony of God and His commands.\u00a0 Yeshua speaks to Nicodemus in a similar manner, peaking of what he has seen (the miracles) and what he knows (the Torah) and yet he does not believe Yeshua\u2019s testimony.\u00a0 Yeshua again uses the \u201cascending and descending\u201d rabbinic concept to illustrate his point.\u00a0 According to the Torah, Moshe does not describe what he saw in heaven when he ascended the mountain.\u00a0 He does say that he was shown the image of the tabernacle that he was commanded to construct, however, he does not provide all of the details of what he saw, the Torah is absent of the heavenly descriptions.\u00a0 Yeshua may be taking from this perspective when he said <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">3:12 \u2018If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 3:13 \u2018No one has ascended into heaven, but He who descended from heaven: the Son of Man. (NASB)<\/span><\/em> saying that he is the one who descended from heaven and he brings with him the testimony of the Father in heaven.\u00a0 He then uses the Scriptures from Parashat Chukat on the serpent that was lifted up, to the one who believes will have eternal life (<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">John 3:14-15<\/span><\/em>) drawing upon the rabbinic understanding that one lifts up his face to gaze upon the serpent in prayer and faith in Father God, and in a similar manner, the son of man will be lifted up, and the one who gazes upon him in prayer and faith in the Lord God will be given eternal life.\u00a0 These concepts are consistent with the rabbinic interpretation from the <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Mishnah Rosh Hashanah 3:8<\/span><\/em>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Mishnah Rosh Hashanah 3:8<\/span><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> \u201cAnd so it was, when Moshe raised his hand, Israel prevailed\u2026\u201d (Exodus 17:11). And is it Moshe\u2019s hands that make [success in] war or break [success in] war? Rather, [this comes to] tell you, [that] whenever Israel would look upward and subjugate their hearts to their Father in heaven, they would prevail; and if not, they would fall. Similar to this matter, you [can] say concerning the verse; \u201cMake a [graven] snake and place it on a pole, and everyone bitten who sees it will live\u201d (Numbers 21:8): And is it the snake that kills or [is it] the snake that [revives]? Rather, whenever Israel would look upward and subjugate their hearts to their Father in heaven, they would be healed; and if not, they would be harmed. A deaf and dumb person, or a mental retard or a minor, cannot relieve others from their obligation [if they blew the shofar for them]. \u05d4\u05d9\u05d5 \u05de\u05ea\u05e8\u05e4\u05d0\u05d9\u05dd, \u05d5\u05d0\u05dd \u05dc\u05d0\u05d5 &#8211; \u05d4\u05d9\u05d5 \u05e0\u05d9\u05de\u05d5\u05e7\u05d9\u05dd. \u05d7\u05e8\u05e9 \u05e9\u05d5\u05d8\u05d4 \u05d5\u05e7\u05d8\u05df \u05d0\u05d9\u05df \u05de\u05d5\u05e6\u05d9\u05d0\u05d9\u05df \u05d0\u05ea \u05d4\u05e8\u05d1\u05d9\u05dd \u05d9\u05d3\u05d9 \u05d7\u05d5\u05d1\u05ea\u05df. \u05d6\u05d4 \u05d4\u05db\u05dc\u05dc: \u05db\u05dc \u05e9\u05d0\u05d9\u05e0\u05d5 \u05de\u05d7\u05d5\u05d9\u05d1 \u05d1\u05d3\u05d1\u05e8, \u05d0\u05d9\u05e0\u05d5 \u05de\u05d5\u05e6\u05d9\u05d0 \u05d0\u05ea \u05d4\u05e8\u05d1\u05d9\u05dd \u05d9\u05d3\u05d9 \u05d7\u05d5\u05d1\u05ea\u05df.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Mishnah speaks of having faith, Moshe raising his hands in praise to the Lord and having success in war whereby <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cwhenever Israel would look upward and subjugate their hearts to their Father in heaven, they would prevail; and if not, they would fall.\u201d<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 In parallel fashion, Moshe makes the image of the snake lifting it up upon a pole and everyone bitten who sees it will live.\u00a0 The rabbis say, <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cwhenever Israel would look upward and subjugate their hearts to their Father in heaven, they would be healed; and if not, they would be harmed.\u201d<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 The point of harm was to draw one to humility, repentance, and subjugation of the heart to our Father in heaven.\u00a0 How much of an influence do you think this has today on being healed in the Messiah Yeshua?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">John 3<\/span><\/em>, Yeshua speaks of having faith in God\u2019s Messiah, of being exempt from judgment for those who believe, and being under judgment for those who do not believe.\u00a0 Note the parallel here to the Talmud, Mishnah, and Yeshua\u2019s interpretations.\u00a0 He continues speaking to Nicodemus with the light verse darkness analogy.\u00a0 The rabbinic understanding of the <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201clight verses darkness\u201d<\/span><\/em> analogy should have caused Nicodemus to immediately put these concepts together while speaking with Yeshua.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Based upon the Torah portion, Parashat Beha\u2019alotcha, the light is a reference to God\u2019s directing our lives according to His Word where He makes a distinction in our lives between the light and darkness.\u00a0 The purpose of the mitzvot is to make a distinction in our lives between righteousness and unrighteousness according to the Torah.\u00a0 In addition, the difference between light and darkness may also be understood as a parallel between the knowledge of good and evil.\u00a0 In the light one is able to judge how one walks and to choose the right path to walk in.\u00a0 The Torah has a one-to-one correspondence here to the light, if we are not studying Torah, how would it be possible to choose the right path (righteousness) to walk in?\u00a0 In addition, darkness is used to hide ones actions (the evil ways), to walk in wickedness without others observing what one is doing.\u00a0 Light has also been used to illustrate the choice between following the commandments of God, in His promises, and seeking to join one\u2019s self to the Lord, and the hope for His eternal rewards, as opposed to darkness having the meaning to follow the enticing of the devil which persuade man to do evil and become captive to sin, wickedness, and being damned to hell which is also described as eternal darkness.\u00a0 Yeshua says <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">3:20 \u2018For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 3:21 \u2018But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.\u2019 (NASB)<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 This is consistent with the rabbinic understanding of light verse darkness to good deeds (righteousness) verses evil deeds (unrighteousness).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The serpent is a symbol of sin and judgment which is coupled with being lifted up from the earth (as being put on a tree), thus drawing in the concept of a curse (<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Devarim \/ Deuteronomy 21:23, Galatians 3:13<\/span><\/em>).\u00a0 <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cGod made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God\u201d<\/span><\/em> (<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">2 Corinthians 5:21<\/span><\/em>).\u00a0 The symbolism here is of those who would look to the one who was lifted up in faith, prayer, and humility, in the Lord God in heaven, and He would send redemption and deliverance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many years later, when the Israelites were in the Promised Land, the serpent became an object of worship (<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">2 Kings 18:4<\/span><\/em>). The people eventually took the things of God and twist them into idolatry.\u00a0 This was the point of the Torah commands to not make graven images so that tools (objects) or the people God chooses to use do not become objects of worship.\u00a0 All the\u00a0 honor and glory belong to the Lord God alone.<\/p>\n<p>In Yeshua\u2019s use of Parashat Chukat with Nicodemus, he said, <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">3:14 \u2018As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; 3:15 so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life. (NASB)<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 Later on Yeshua said in <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">John 12:32<\/span><\/em> the following:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">John 12:32<\/span><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> 12:32 \u201cAnd I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.\u201d 32\u03ba\u1f00\u03b3\u1f7c \u1f10\u1f70\u03bd \u1f51\u03c8\u03c9\u03b8\u1ff6 \u1f10\u03ba \u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2 \u03b3\u1fc6\u03c2, \u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2 \u1f11\u03bb\u03ba\u1f7b\u03c3\u03c9 \u03c0\u03c1\u1f78\u03c2 \u1f10\u03bc\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u1f79\u03bd.<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Note that the word <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cmen\u201d<\/span><\/em> is not in the original Greek text, the word used is \u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2 meaning<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> \u201c1) individually\u00a0 1a) each, every, any, all, the whole, everyone, all things,\u00a0 everything\u00a0 2) collectively\u00a0 2a) some of all types.\u201d<\/span><\/em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The description here is the drawing of something of all types of individuals.\u00a0 In a similar thought, Yeshua also said that the Father in heaven draws men to him in <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">John 6:44-45<\/span><\/em>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">John 6:44-45<\/span><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> 6:44 \u2018No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day. 6:45 \u2018It is written in the prophets, \u2018And they shall all be taught of God.\u2019 Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me. (NASB)<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What we are finding here in this week\u2019s Torah portion is that God\u2019s plan for us is larger than people simply going to church, believing in Jesus, and worshiping Him and that being the extent of or our relationship with God.\u00a0 Yeshua says that He will draw <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201call,\u201d<\/span><\/em> and thus, He is saying that his death and resurrection has the power it has to eradicate sin.\u00a0 The Scriptures description of the eradication of sin is the same as saying the eradication of disobedience, which is synonymous to saying that He will cause His people to walk in righteousness and holiness.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Colossians 1:19-20<\/span><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> 1:19 For it was the Father\u2019s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, 1:20 and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say\u00a0 whether things on earth or things in heaven.
