{"id":2859,"date":"2014-03-23T12:53:30","date_gmt":"2014-03-23T12:53:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.matsati.com\/?p=2859"},"modified":"2014-03-23T12:53:30","modified_gmt":"2014-03-23T12:53:30","slug":"bits-of-torah-truths-parashat-tazria-gods-plan-for-separation-and-our-choices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.matsati.com\/index.php\/bits-of-torah-truths-parashat-tazria-gods-plan-for-separation-and-our-choices\/","title":{"rendered":"Bits of Torah Truths, Parashat Tazria, God\u2019s Plan for Separation and Our Choices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In weeks reading from Parashat Tazria (<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Vayikra \/ Leviticus 12:1-13:59<\/span><\/em>), the Lord speaks to Moshe saying when a woman gives birth to a baby boy, she will be unclean for seven days (<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">12:1-2<\/span><\/em>) and on the eighth day the child is to be circumcised (<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>12:4<\/em><\/span>).\u00a0 Following the birth, the woman is to remain in the blood of her purification for thirty days and she is not to touch any consecrated thing nor enter into the sanctuary until the days of her purification are complete (<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>12:4<\/em><\/span>).\u00a0 If she gives birth to a baby girl, she will be unclean for two weeks and remain in the blood of her purification for sixty days.\u00a0 The woman is then to bring a young lamb as an Olah Korban (burnt offering) and a dove as a Khatat Korban (sin offering).\u00a0 If she cannot afford the lamb, she is to bring two turtle doves or two pigeons for a sin offering (<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">12:5-8<\/span><\/em>).\u00a0 The Lord then commands Moshe regarding the disease of Tzaraat (Leprosy).\u00a0 The Cohen (Priest) is to inspect the person showing the signs of Tzaraat (<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">13:1-46<\/span><\/em>).\u00a0 The person having Tzaraat is to remain outside of the camp and the Scriptures say <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">13:45 \u2018As for the leper who has the infection, his clothes shall be torn, and the hair of his head shall be uncovered, and he shall cover his mustache and cry, \u2018Unclean! Unclean!\u2019\u00a0 13:46 \u2018He shall remain unclean all the days during which he has the infection; he is unclean. she shall not touch any consecrated thing, nor enter the sanctuary until the days of her purification are completed. 12:5 \u2018But if she bears a female child, then she shall be unclean for two weeks, as in her menstruation; and she shall remain in the blood of her purification for sixty-six days.\u00a0\u00a0 (NASB)<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Reading through this week\u2019s portion, the opening verses lead to many questions.\u00a0 The Parshah opens stating that childbirth renders a woman ritually impure, however, there are differences in the lengths of the time of impurity depending on the gender of her offspring (a baby boy verses a girl).\u00a0 Why is there a difference in the period of impurity for a woman who has given birth to a boy (seven days) as compared to one who has delivered a girl (fourteen days)?\u00a0 Why is there a different standard where the mother must wait thirty days verses sixty days in the blood of her purity?\u00a0 In both cases, there is a two-phased period of impurity.\u00a0 How does the initial time of impurity (seven days for a boy and fourteen days for a girl) differ from the second phase (thirty-three days for a boy and sixty-six days for a girl)?\u00a0 <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Vayikra \/ Leviticus 12:2<\/span><\/em> states that a woman after childbirth <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cshall be impure as at the time of her condition of menstrual separation.\u201d<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 Note also that in the first stage, during the seven days, she made all that she touched unclean; in the second stage, during the thirty days, she was only required to touch no hallowed thing, nor come into the sanctuary, as she was progressing towards cleanness.\u00a0 Why do you think these two conditions were linked in this way?\u00a0 Let\u2019s examine the Scriptures and try to figure out what is going on.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing to do is to begin with a short study on the word Tazria (<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05ea\u05b7\u05d6\u05b0\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05e2\u05b7<\/span>).\u00a0 Turning back in the Scriptures, the first occurrence of the root form of the Hebrew word Tazria (<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05ea\u05b7\u05d6\u05b0\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05e2\u05b7<\/span>) is found in Bereshit \/ Genesis\u00a0 1:11-12:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Bereshit \/ Genesis 1:11-12<\/span><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> 1:11 Then God said, \u2018Let the earth sprout vegetation: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees on the earth bearing fruit after their kind with seed in them\u2019; and it was so.\u00a0 1:12 The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit with seed in them, after their kind; and God saw that it was good. (NASB)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05d9\u05d0\u00a0\u00a0 \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b9\u05d0\u05de\u05b6\u05e8 \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05ea\u05bc\u05b7\u05d3\u05b0\u05e9\u05c1\u05b5\u05d0 \u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b8\u05e8\u05b6\u05e5 \u05d3\u05bc\u05b6\u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05d0 \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05db\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9-\u05d8\u05d5\u05b9\u05d1<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The word Mazria (<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05de\u05b7\u05d6\u05b0\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05e2\u05b7<\/span>) in <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Bereshit \/ Genesis 1:11-12<\/span><\/em> is a verb written as a Hiphil Participle.\u00a0 A participle is a form of a verb that is used in a sentence to modify a noun or noun phrase, and thus plays a role similar to that of an adjective or adverb.\u00a0 In the creation account, Mazria modifies Zera (<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05d6\u05b6\u05e8\u05b7\u05e2<\/span>) describing the earth sprouting forth vegetation.\u00a0 The word Tazria (<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05ea\u05b7\u05d6\u05b0\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05e2\u05b7<\/span>) in <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Vayikra \/ Leviticus 12:2<\/span><\/em> is a verb written in the Hiphil Imperfect 3rd Feminine Singular form.\u00a0 The imperfect is a verb form, found in various languages, which combines past tense (reference to a past time) and imperfective aspect (reference to a continuing or repeated event or state).\u00a0 The infinitive definition of Tazria is <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>\u201cto sow, scatter seed.\u201d<\/em><\/span>\u00a0 The word Tazria (<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05ea\u05b7\u05d6\u05b0\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05e2\u05b7<\/span>) is Hebrew for <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cshe conceives,\u201d<\/span><\/em> and the NASB translates as <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cwhen she gives birth.\u201d<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 Is there some sort of connection that is being made between the creation account and the woman who gives birth in <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Vayikra \/ Leviticus 12<\/span><\/em> by the use and meaning of the Hebrew words in these Scriptures?\u00a0 It is interesting to note that <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cchildbirth\u201d<\/span><\/em> may be written in a different way in the Hebrew bible, using the word <span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05d5\u05b0\u05d9\u05b8\u05dc\u05b8\u05d3\u05d5\u05bc<\/span> rather than the word <span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05ea\u05b7\u05d6\u05b0\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05e2\u05b7<\/span> (see <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Shemot \/ Exodus 1:19<\/span><\/em>).\u00a0 It may be that Moshe is making a connection to the Creation account.\u00a0 In the creation account it is also important to note that the first few days were days of separation.\u00a0 The Lord God separated the light from the darkness, and the land from the sea, and the sky.\u00a0 Note also that separation is a form of sanctification and holiness.\u00a0 Upon having separated (sanctified) the land, the Lord commanded it to bring forth vegetation.\u00a0 This appears to be an interesting connection that is being made to the woman who following her giving birth is commanded to separate herself for the Lord because of her blood and then to remain in the blood of her purity for a certain specified amount of time.<\/p>\n<p>Note also, in <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Midrash Rabbah Leviticus Chapter 14, Part 1<\/span><\/em>, on Parashat Tazria, Rabbi Simlai notes that just as God created humans after creating cattle, beasts, and birds, the law concerning human impurity in <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Vayikra \/ Leviticus 12<\/span><\/em> follows that concerning cattle, beasts, and birds in <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Vayikra \/ Leviticus 11<\/span><\/em> and what we eat regarding clean verses unclean foods. (<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05d0\u05f4\u05e8 \u05e9\u05de\u05dc\u05d0\u05d9 \u05db\u05e9\u05dd \u05e9\u05d9\u05e6\u05d9\u05e8\u05ea\u05d5 \u05e9\u05dc \u05d0\u05d3\u05dd \u05d0\u05d7\u05e8 \u05d1\u05d4\u05de\u05d4 \u05d7\u05d9\u05d4 \u05d5\u05e2\u05d5\u05e3 \u05db\u05da \u05ea\u05d5\u05e8\u05ea\u05d5 \u05d0\u05d7\u05e8 \u05d1\u05d4\u05de\u05d4 \u05d7\u05d9\u05d4 \u05d5\u05e2\u05d5\u05e3 \u05d4\u05d4\u05f4\u05d3 \u05d6\u05d0\u05ea \u05ea\u05d5\u05e8\u05ea \u05d4\u05d1\u05d4\u05de\u05d4 \u05d5\u05d0\u05d7\u05f4\u05db \u05d0\u05e9\u05d4 \u05db\u05d9 \u05ea\u05d6\u05e8\u05d9\u05e2<\/span>)\u00a0 This portion is placed within the context of separation and holiness before God.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to this, we read the verses following the command of the woman who gives birth in <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Vayikra \/ Leviticus 12:6\u20138<\/span><\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Vayikra \/ Leviticus 12:6-8<\/span><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> 12:6 \u2018When the days of her purification are completed, for a son or for a daughter, she shall bring to the priest at the doorway of the tent of meeting a one year old lamb for a burnt offering and a young pigeon or a turtledove for a sin offering.\u00a0 12:7 \u2018Then he shall offer it before the Lord and make atonement for her, and she shall be cleansed from the flow of her blood. This is the law for her who bears a child, whether a male or a female.\u00a0 12:8 \u2018But if she cannot afford a lamb, then she shall take two turtledoves or two young pigeons, the one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering; and the priest shall make atonement for her, and she will be clean.\u2019\u2018 (NASB)<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the Scriptures, there are two types of sacrifices required of a woman after she gave birth regardless of whether it was a boy or a girl; a whole burnt offering (Olah Korban) and a Sin offering (Khatat Korban).\u00a0 The first sacrifice is designated to sanctify the altar and the second is for sin.\u00a0 These things might be related to pregnancy, delivery, and new life since the baby would need to remain with the mother throughout this time period since he or she would need the mothers milk.\u00a0 Thus, the baby was also taking part in separation process after having been born.<\/p>\n<p>The remainder of Parashat Tazria deals with the laws concerning Tsaraat (leprosy).\u00a0 The person stricken with Tsaraat must wait outside the camp and then undergo inspection by the priest.\u00a0 Following the careful inspection of the priest and the declaration the person stricken with Tsaraat has become clean, there is a procedure that is followed to complete the cleansing process.\u00a0 The blood is sprinkled seven times and he is pronounced clean.\u00a0 Following these things, the person who has been healed washes his cloths and shaves his entire body and then washes his body in\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>\u201cMayim Khayim\u201d<\/em><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05d4\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05b7\u05d9\u05b4\u05dd \u05d4\u05b7\u05d7\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/span> <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cthe living waters\u201d<\/span><\/em> and they are clean.\u00a0 Following this cleansing procedure the person is allowed to enter into the city, however, he or she must dwell\/remain outside of his tent for seven more days.\u00a0 On the eighth day the person who is cleansed is to take two male lambs and a one year old ewe lamb, three tenths of and ephah of fine flour mixed with oil for a Mincha offering, and one log of oil.\u00a0 These lambs are used to make the Olah Korban (Whole burnt offering), Chatat Korban (Sin offering), and Asham Korban (Guilt offering) before the Lord.\u00a0 Note, in the number of days of separation, there is a parallel to the woman who has given birth at the beginning of Parashat Tazria needing to wait seven days and the child is circumcised, and then the woman needs to wait and additional period of days regarding the blood of her purification (thirty days for a baby boy, sixty days for a baby girl).\u00a0 In both instances, the law of Niddah specifies that following the days of Niddah (menstruation), she is to dip herself in <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>\u201cMayim Khayim\u201d<\/em><\/span> (<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05de\u05b7\u05d9\u05b4\u05dd \u05d7\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/span>) <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cLiving Waters\u201d<\/span><\/em> and she is cleansed.\u00a0 Throughout the Scriptures, the <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cLiving Waters\u201d<\/span><\/em> has many applications.\u00a0 Living waters are required in the process of Teshuvah (repentance) and the mikvah (baptism).\u00a0 Note that baptism goes all the way back to the Torah, it is not a New Testament only phenomenon.\u00a0 According to the Scriptures, God Himself is described as <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cthe spring of living water\u201d<\/span><\/em> according to <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Jeremiah 2:13 and 17:13.<\/span><\/em> (<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05d1:\u05d9\u05d2\u00a0\u00a0 \u05db\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9-\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05ea\u05bc\u05b7\u05d9\u05b4\u05dd \u05e8\u05b8\u05e2\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05e2\u05b8\u05e9\u05b8\u05b9\u05d4 \u05e2\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d0\u05b9\u05ea\u05b4\u05d9 \u05e2\u05b8\u05d6\u05b0\u05d1\u05d5\u05bc \u05de\u05b0\u05e7\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8 | \u05de\u05b7\u05d9\u05b4\u05dd \u05d7\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05dc\u05b7\u05d7\u05b0\u05e6\u05b9\u05d1 \u05dc\u05b8\u05d4\u05b6\u05dd \u05d1\u05bc\u05b9\u05d0\u05e8\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05d1\u05bc\u05b9\u05d0\u05e8\u05b9\u05ea \u05e0\u05b4\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05e8 \u05dc\u05b9\u05d0-\u05d9\u05b8\u05db\u05b4\u05dc\u05d5\u05bc \u05d4\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05b8\u05d9\u05b4\u05dd:<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>2:13 \u2018For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, The fountain of living waters, To hew for themselves cisterns, Broken cisterns That can hold no water. Those who turn away on earth will be written down, Because they have forsaken the fountain of living water, even the Lord.
