{"id":2843,"date":"2014-03-09T14:43:32","date_gmt":"2014-03-09T14:43:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.matsati.com\/?p=2843"},"modified":"2014-03-09T14:43:32","modified_gmt":"2014-03-09T14:43:32","slug":"bits-of-torah-truths-parashat-tzav-living-souls-the-messiah-and-the-sacrificial-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.matsati.com\/index.php\/bits-of-torah-truths-parashat-tzav-living-souls-the-messiah-and-the-sacrificial-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Bits of Torah Truths, Parashat Tzav, Living Souls, the Messiah, and the Sacrificial System"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In weeks reading from Parashat Tzav (<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Vayikra \/ Leviticus 6:1-8:36<\/em><\/span>), the Lord speaks to Moshe to command the sons of Aaron regarding the Olah (raise) offering (<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">6:8-9<\/span><\/em>), the Minchah (grain) offering, the Chatat (sin) offering, the Asham (guilt) offering, and the Shelamim (Peace) offering.\u00a0 The Torat (<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05ea\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8\u05b7\u05ea<\/span>, law) of the Olah offering is to keep it burning continually.\u00a0 The Torat (law) of the Minchah offering is to present it before the Lord at the altar (<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>6:14-18<\/em><\/span>).\u00a0 The Torat of the Chatat offering is to eat it in a holy place.\u00a0 The Torat of the Asham offering, it is to be slain in the same place the burnt offering is slain (<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">7:1-2<\/span><\/em>) and eaten in a holy place.\u00a0 The Torat of the Shelamim offering (<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>7:11-13<\/em><\/span>) states this is a thanksgiving offering, one is to bring it with the cakes of unleavened bread and the person is to present one of every type of offering as a contribution to the Lord (<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>7:13-16<\/em><\/span>).\u00a0 All of the flesh of the offering is to be eaten up by morning (<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">7:17-19<\/span><\/em>).\u00a0 The Scriptures state <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">8:34\u2018The Lord has commanded to do as has been done this day, to make atonement on your behalf. (NASB)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>6:14 \u2018Now this is the law of the grain offering: the sons of Aaron shall present it before the Lord in front of the altar. (NASB)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>6:25 \u2018Speak to Aaron and to his sons, saying, \u2018This is the law of the sin offering: in the place where the burnt offering is slain the sin offering shall be slain before the Lord; it is most holy. (NASB)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>7:1 \u2018Now this is the law of the guilt offering; it is most holy. (NASB)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>7:11 \u2018Now this is the law of the sacrifice of peace offerings which shall be presented to the Lord. (NASB)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>7:37 This is the law of the burnt offering, the grain offering and the sin offering and the guilt offering and the ordination offering and the sacrifice of peace offerings, (NASB)<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the books of Genesis and Exodus, God chose the people of Israel and called them an <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cam segulah\u201d<\/span><\/em> meaning <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>\u201ca treasured people\u201d<\/em><\/span> (see <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Shemot \/ Exodus 19:5, Devarim \/ Deuteronomy 7:6<\/span><\/em>).\u00a0 Note that prior to the book of Leviticus, the Lord God Almighty functioned <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201con the outside\u201d<\/span><\/em> and we learn in Exodus that the Lord led His people out of Egypt, made a covenant with them at Sinai, and has taken residence among them in the Mishkan (Tabernacle).\u00a0 The Lord is <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cin the midst of the people,\u201d<\/span><\/em> a fulfillment of His promises spoken of throughout the Torah.\u00a0 The book of Leviticus reveals how to be in relationship with Him, and the key is found within the sacrificial system.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Torat (law) of the sacrifice, when a person acts in disobedience to the Lord (when he sins) he is to bring a sacrifice, where God allows the death of the sacrifice to take the place of the sinner.\u00a0 The guilty person lays his hand upon the head of the animal and confesses his sins before God.\u00a0 When the Lord sees the shed blood ascending in smoke, He forgives the sinner based on his faith and Teshuvah (repentance).\u00a0 Why does God allow the death of a animal to take the place of a human being?\u00a0 According to the Scriptures, when a person sins against the Lord, he deserves to die.\u00a0 The accuser comes before God and makes a case against the person\u2019s <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Neshama<\/span> <\/em>(Soul), were our sin forfeits the <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">neshama<\/span> <\/em>(the soul).\u00a0 According to the book of Genesis, God created a <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>\u201cNefesh Chai\u201d<\/em><\/span> (<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05e0\u05b6\u05e4\u05b6\u05e9\u05c1 \u05d7\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b8\u05d4<\/span>, Living Soul) in all creatures.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Bereshit \/ Genesis 1:24<\/em><\/span> states that He created a <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Nefesh Chai<\/em><\/span> in the cattle (the beasts of the field).<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05e1\u05e4\u05e8 \u05d1\u05e8\u05d0\u05e9\u05d9\u05ea \u05e4\u05e8\u05e7 \u05d0<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> \u05db\u05d3\u00a0\u00a0 \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b9\u05d0\u05de\u05b6\u05e8 \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05ea\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05e6\u05b5\u05d0 \u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b8\u05e8\u05b6\u05e5 \u05e0\u05b6\u05e4\u05b6\u05e9\u05c1 \u05d7\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b8\u05d4 \u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05e0\u05b8\u05d4\u05bc \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05d4\u05b5\u05de\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d5\u05b8\u05e8\u05b6\u05de\u05b6\u05e9\u05b9 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d7\u05b7\u05d9\u05b0\u05ea\u05d5\u05b9-\u05d0\u05b6\u05e8\u05b6\u05e5 \u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05e0\u05b8\u05d4\u05bc \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9-\u05db\u05b5\u05df: \u05db\u05d4\u00a0\u00a0 \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b7\u05e2\u05b7\u05e9\u05b9 \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05d7\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b7\u05ea \u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b8\u05e8\u05b6\u05e5 \u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05e0\u05b8\u05d4\u05bc \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05d4\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05d4\u05b5\u05de\u05b8\u05d4 \u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05e0\u05b8\u05d4\u05bc \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b5\u05ea \u05db\u05bc\u05b8\u05dc-\u05e8\u05b6\u05de\u05b6\u05e9\u05b9 \u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b2\u05d3\u05b8\u05de\u05b8\u05d4 \u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05e0\u05b5\u05d4\u05d5\u05bc \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05d0 \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05db\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9-\u05d8\u05d5\u05b9\u05d1:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Bereshit \/ Genesis 1:24-25<\/span><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> 1:24 Then God said, \u2018Let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind: cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth after their kind\u2019; and it was so. 1:25 God made the beasts of the earth after their kind, and the cattle after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind; and God saw that it was good. (NASB)<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Note the NASB translates <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>\u201cNefesh Chai\u201d<\/em><\/span> as <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cliving creatures,\u201d<\/span><\/em> choosing not to take the more literal meaning <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cliving soul.\u201d<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 The Lord God Almighty gave each living creature a <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Nefesh Chai<\/span><\/em> (a living soul); the difference between man and beast is that the Lord did something unique in the creation of man, He <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cNishmat Chaim\u201d<\/span><\/em> (<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05e0\u05b4\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05de\u05b7\u05ea \u05d7\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/span>, breathed heavily life) into man and woman (see <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Bereshit \/ Genesis 2:7<\/span><\/em>).\u00a0 It is within this unique creation, the Lord Himself literally breathing life into man that draws the distinction between man and beast.\u00a0 It is within the sacrificial system that one <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>\u201cNefesh Chai\u201d<\/em><\/span> is given in substitute for another <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>\u201cNefesh Chai\u201d<\/em><\/span> that enables us to draw near to the Lord in the forgiveness of sins.\u00a0 Regarding the sacrificial system, is it the death of the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Nefesh Chai<\/em><\/span> that results in our ability to draw near to the Lord?<\/p>\n<p>Reading through Parashat Tzav, the sacrifices are listed in a particular order:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Burnt offering \u2192 Grain offering \u2192 Sin offering \u2192 Guilt offering \u2192 Peace offering.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Based on the order of the prescribed offerings, everything seems to point to the final offering of peace.\u00a0 Note that he Shelamim offering (<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">7:11-13<\/span><\/em>) is a thanksgiving offering were one is to bring one of every type of offering as a contribution to the Lord (<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">7:13-16<\/span><\/em>).\u00a0 In Midrash Rabba the rabbis speak extensively on the Shelamim offering (<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Midrash Rabba, Chapter 9, Part 9<\/span><\/em>, <span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05de\u05d3\u05e8\u05e9 \u05e8\u05d1\u05d4 \u05d5\u05d9\u05e7\u05e8\u05d0 \u05e4\u05e8\u05e9\u05d4 \u05d8 \u05e1\u05d9\u05de\u05df \u05d8<\/span>) saying the following:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cR. Simeon B. Yohai said: Great is peace, since all blessings are comprised therein, as it is written, The Lord will give strength unto His people; the Lord will bless His people with peace (Tehillim \/ Psalms 29:11).\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The order of the offerings suggest that the Lord will give strength to His people in blessing them with peace.\u00a0 The midrash continues saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cWhence do we know that this was also in connection with sacrifices?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u2022 \u2022 \u2022<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Scripture teaches us this by saying at the end of the chapter on communal sacrifices, These you shall offer unto the Lord in your appointed seasons, beside your vows, and your free will offerings, whether they be your burnt offerings, or your meal offerings, or your drink offerings, or your peace offerings (Bamidbar \/ Numbers 29:39).\u00a0 Now I know that peace is the climax of all things in this world; whence do I know that it is to be so in the world to come?\u00a0 It is said, Behold I will extend peace to her like a river (Isaiah 66:12).\u00a0 The Rabbis said: Great is peace, seeing that when the Messianic King is to come, he will commence with peace, as it is said, How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger of good tidings, that announce peace (Isaiah 52:7).\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The rabbis say that <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>\u201cPeace\u201d<\/em><\/span> is the climax of all things in the <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">olam hazeh<\/span><\/em> (in this world), and in the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>olam habah<\/em><\/span> (the world to come), and when the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Messianic King<\/em><\/span> comes, he will commence with peace.\u00a0 Interestingly, when Yeshua the Messiah came, the work that He did in His life was followed by the giving of His peace.\u00a0 Yeshua made atonement upon the cross, fulfilling the Messianic prophecies of the Tanach through His sacrifice to atone for the sins of the world.\u00a0 The rabbis say that the Messianic King will commence with peace.\u00a0 Having completed what He has come to do, Yeshua commenced with giving His Peace by the power of the Holy Spirit and in truth.\u00a0 He has brought peace to each one of us, between God and between one another.\u00a0 Halleluia, Praise the Lord!<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">John 14:27<\/span><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> 14:27 \u2018Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.
