{"id":2682,"date":"2013-12-08T13:52:21","date_gmt":"2013-12-08T13:52:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.matsati.com\/?p=2682"},"modified":"2013-12-11T13:28:45","modified_gmt":"2013-12-11T13:28:45","slug":"bits-of-torah-truths-parashat-vayechi-the-king-messiah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.matsati.com\/index.php\/bits-of-torah-truths-parashat-vayechi-the-king-messiah\/","title":{"rendered":"Bits of Torah Truths, Parashat Vayechi, The King Messiah"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This weeks reading, from Parashat Vayechi (<em>Bereshit \/ Genesis 47:28-50:26<\/em>), contains the final chapters of the book of Genesis.\u00a0 The opening verses tell us that Jacob (Israel) lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years and the total years of his life were 147 years.\u00a0 Before Jacob died he asked Joseph saying <em>47:30 but when I lie down with my fathers, you shall carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their burial place.\u2019 And he said, \u2018I will do as you have said.\u2019 (NASB)<\/em>\u00a0 Joseph takes his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim and has Jacob bless them (<em>48:1-2<\/em>).\u00a0 Jacob tells Joseph that these two sons (Manasseh and Ephraim) will be his (<em>48:5<\/em>) and declares that Joseph\u2019s descendents after him shall be called after their names (<em>48:6<\/em>).\u00a0 Jacob recounts the death of his wife Rachael (<em>48:7-9<\/em>).\u00a0 He blesses Joseph\u2019s children placing Ephraim (second born) before Manasseh (first born) saying the younger will be greater than the older (<em>48:10-20<\/em>).\u00a0 Jacob then proceeds to make statements against his sons on account of what they had done while in the land of Canaan (<em>49:1-26<\/em>).\u00a0 In the midst of giving the blessing over his sons he provides us with a Messianic expectation in his statements to Judah<em> 49:10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor the ruler\u2019s staff from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes, And to him shall be the obedience of the peoples. (NASB)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Targum Pseudo Jonathan<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em> And Jakob called his sons and said to them, Purify yourselves from uncleanness, and I will show you the hidden mysteries, the ends concealed, the recompense of reward for the righteous, the retribution of the wicked, and the bower of Eden, what it is. And the twelve tribes of Israel gathered themselves together around the golden bed whereon he reclined, and where was revealed to him the Shekina of the Lord, (though) the end for which the king Mashiakh is to come had been concealed from him. Then said he, Come, and I will declare to you what shall befall you at the end of the days. Gather yourselves together and hear, ye sons of Jakob, and receive instruction from Israel your father.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Reading through the weekly Torah portion, it is nice to read through the Aramaic Targums to see the rabbinic perspective on the Scriptures.\u00a0 What is interesting about the Aramaic Targums are the messianic allusions that are put forth by the rabbis regarding the meaning of the Hebrew text.\u00a0 Take for example the Targum Onkelos introduces the Messiah in <em>Bereshit \/ Genesis 49:10-12<\/em> and <em>Bamidbar \/ Numbers 24:17-20, 23-24<\/em>, where other Targums such as Pseudo Jonathan and the Jerusalem Targum find messianic references everywhere.\u00a0 Here in <em>Bereshit \/ Genesis 49:1-2<\/em> from Targum Pseudo Jonathan the rabbis make a reference that Jacob called all of his children together because knew he was about to speak to his sons regarding the messiah.\u00a0 In the blessing that Jacob made over Judah, he says <span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05dc\u05b9\u05d0-\u05d9\u05b8\u05e1\u05d5\u05bc\u05e8 \u05e9\u05c1\u05b5\u05d1\u05b6\u05d8 \u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05bc\u05d3\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d5\u05bc\u05de\u05b0\u05d7\u05b9\u05e7\u05b5\u05e7 \u05de\u05b4\u05d1\u05bc\u05b5\u05d9\u05df \u05e8\u05b7\u05d2\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05d9\u05d5 \u05e2\u05b7\u05d3 \u05db\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9-\u05d9\u05b8\u05d1\u05b9\u05d0 \u05e9\u05c1\u05b4\u05d9\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4 \u05d5\u05b0\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9 \u05d9\u05b4\u05e7\u05bc\u05b0\u05d4\u05b7\u05ea \u05e2\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/span>\u00a0 <em>49:10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor the ruler\u2019s staff from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes, And to him shall be the obedience of the peoples. (NASB)<\/em>\u00a0 According to these Scriptures, the scepter or staff (<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05e9\u05c1\u05b5\u05d1\u05b6\u05d8<\/span>) will not depart from Judah or from between his feet (<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05de\u05b4\u05d1\u05bc\u05b5\u05d9\u05df \u05e8\u05b7\u05d2\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05d9\u05d5<\/span>) until Shiloh comes (<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05e2\u05b7\u05d3 \u05db\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9-\u05d9\u05b8\u05d1\u05b9\u05d0 \u05e9\u05c1\u05b4\u05d9\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4<\/span>) and to him will be the obedience of the people (<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05d5\u05b0\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9 \u05d9\u05b4\u05e7\u05bc\u05b0\u05d4\u05b7\u05ea \u05e2\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/span>).\u00a0 In standard Christian commentaries, Shiloh (<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05e9\u05c1\u05b4\u05d9\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4<\/span>) is understood as a reference to the Messiah, where the word Shiloh signifies the way in which he will come, <em>\u201cthe peaceful one.\u201d<\/em> (Easton\u2019s Dictionary) The Targum Onkelos states <span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05e2\u05b7\u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05b8\u05d0 \u05e2\u05b7\u05d3 \u05d3\u05bc\u05b0\u05d9\u05b5\u05d9\u05ea\u05b5\u05d9 \u05de\u05b0\u05e9\u05c1\u05b4\u05d9\u05d7\u05b8\u05d0<\/span> <em>\u201cuntil the Messiah comes.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 Comparing Aramaic translations on this verse, it is interesting to note that Targum Pseudo-Jonathan says <em>\u201cuntil the time when the King Messiah will come, the youngest of his sons, and because of him nations shall melt away.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 In each of the Aramaic translations, the one who is coming (Shiloh, \u05e9\u05c1\u05b4\u05d9\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4) is the <em>\u201cking Messiah\u201d<\/em> (<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05de\u05dc\u05db\u05d0 \u05d3\u05de\u05e9\u05d9\u05d7\u05d0<\/span>).
