{"id":2592,"date":"2013-10-27T12:34:31","date_gmt":"2013-10-27T12:34:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.matsati.com\/?p=2592"},"modified":"2013-10-27T12:34:31","modified_gmt":"2013-10-27T12:34:31","slug":"bits-of-torah-truths-parashat-toldot-who-are-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.matsati.com\/index.php\/bits-of-torah-truths-parashat-toldot-who-are-you\/","title":{"rendered":"Bits of Torah Truths, Parashat Toldot, Who are You?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This weeks reading is from Parashat Toldot (<em>Bereshit \/ Genesis 25:19-28:9<\/em>).\u00a0 Parashat Toldot may be summarized in the following way: (i) the struggle between Jacob and Esav within Rebecca\u2019s womb (<em>25:21-23<\/em>), (ii) Esav became a skilled hunter and Jacob dwelled in tents (<em>25:27-28<\/em>) Isaac loved Esav and Rebecca loved Jacob, (iii) Esav sold his birthright for a bowl of soup (<em>25:29-34<\/em>), Isaac and Abimelech king of the Philistines interact, Isaac tells Avimelech that his wife is his sister (<em>26:1-11<\/em>), (iv) Abimelech, Ahuzzath, and Phicol make a covenant with Isaac (<em>26:26-31<\/em>), (v) Jacob steals Esav\u2019s blessing (<em>27:1-41<\/em>), (vi) Jacob flees to Haran (<em>27:42-28:6<\/em>), and (vii) Esav takes a wife from the daughters of Canaan (<em>28:7-9<\/em>).\u00a0 According to the Scriptures, before Jacob and Esav were born they struggled together in their mothers womb <span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05db\u05d1\u00a0\u00a0 \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b4\u05ea\u05b0\u05e8\u05b9\u05e6\u05b2\u05e6\u05d5\u05bc \u05d4\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05e7\u05b4\u05e8\u05b0\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05d4\u05bc \u05d5\u05b7\u05ea\u05bc\u05b9\u05d0\u05de\u05b6\u05e8 \u05d0\u05b4\u05dd-\u05db\u05bc\u05b5\u05df \u05dc\u05b8\u05de\u05bc\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d6\u05bc\u05b6\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b8\u05e0\u05b9\u05db\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d5\u05b7\u05ea\u05bc\u05b5\u05dc\u05b6\u05da\u05b0 \u05dc\u05b4\u05d3\u05b0\u05e8\u05e9\u05c1 \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05d5\u05b9\u05b8\u05d4: \u05db\u05d2\u00a0\u00a0 \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b9\u05d0\u05de\u05b6\u05e8 \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05d4 \u05dc\u05b8\u05d4\u05bc \u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05e0\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d2\u05b9\u05d9\u05d9\u05b4\u05dd [\u05d2\u05d5\u05b9\u05d9\u05b4\u05dd] \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05d1\u05b4\u05d8\u05b0\u05e0\u05b5\u05da\u05b0 \u05d5\u05bc\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05e0\u05b5\u05d9 \u05dc\u05b0\u05d0\u05bb\u05de\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05de\u05b4\u05de\u05bc\u05b5\u05e2\u05b7\u05d9\u05b4\u05da\u05b0 \u05d9\u05b4\u05e4\u05bc\u05b8\u05e8\u05b5\u05d3\u05d5\u05bc \u05d5\u05bc\u05dc\u05b0\u05d0\u05b9\u05dd \u05de\u05b4\u05dc\u05b0\u05d0\u05b9\u05dd \u05d9\u05b6\u05d0\u05b1\u05de\u05b8\u05e5 \u05d5\u05b0\u05e8\u05b7\u05d1 \u05d9\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05d1\u05b9\u05d3 \u05e6\u05b8\u05e2\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8:<\/span> <em>25:22 But the children struggled together within her; and she said, \u2018If it is so, why then am I this way?\u00a0 So she went to inquire of the Lord.\u00a0 25:23 The Lord said to her, \u2018Two nations are in your womb; And two peoples will be separated from your body; And one people shall be stronger than the other; And the older shall serve the younger.\u2019 (NASB)<\/em>\u00a0 The struggle between these two brothers, as the scripture says is between two nations (<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05e0\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d2\u05b9\u05d9\u05d9\u05b4\u05dd<\/span>), it is apparent that the struggle is related to the one who walks by faith and the other who despises God\u2019s ways.\u00a0 The Scriptures say that Jacob dwelled in tents and Esav was a hunter in the fields.\u00a0 We also learn that Esav despised God and the promise of Abraham by his willingness to sell his birthright and marry from the daughters of Canaan (<em>Bereshit \/ Genesis 25:32<\/em>).\u00a0 Jacob on the other hand loved the promises of God and did everything he could to inherit what God had promised to his fathers.\u00a0 Can we ask ourselves this question: <em>\u201cHave we done everything that we can in our relationship with the Lord in order to obtain what He has for us today?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05db\u05ea\u05d1\u05d9 \u05d4\u05e7\u05d5\u05d3\u05e9 \/ The Holy Scriptures<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: right;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05e1\u05e4\u05e8 \u05d1\u05e8\u05d0\u05e9\u05d9\u05ea \u05e4\u05e8\u05e7 \u05db\u05d6<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05dc\u00a0\u00a0 \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9 \u05db\u05bc\u05b7\u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05e8 \u05db\u05bc\u05b4\u05dc\u05bc\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d9\u05b4\u05e6\u05b0\u05d7\u05b8\u05e7 \u05dc\u05b0\u05d1\u05b8\u05e8\u05b5\u05da\u05b0 \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05d9\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05e7\u05b9\u05d1 \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d0\u05b7\u05da\u05b0 \u05d9\u05b8\u05e6\u05b9\u05d0 \u05d9\u05b8\u05e6\u05b8\u05d0 \u05d9\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05e7\u05b9\u05d1 \u05de\u05b5\u05d0\u05b5\u05ea \u05e4\u05bc\u05b0\u05e0\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d9\u05b4\u05e6\u05b0\u05d7\u05b8\u05e7 \u05d0\u05b8\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05d5 \u05d5\u05b0\u05e2\u05b5\u05e9\u05b8\u05b9\u05d5 \u05d0\u05b8\u05d7\u05b4\u05d9\u05d5 \u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05d0 \u05de\u05b4\u05e6\u05bc\u05b5\u05d9\u05d3\u05d5\u05b9: \u05dc\u05d0\u00a0\u00a0 \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b7\u05e2\u05b7\u05e9\u05b9 \u05d2\u05bc\u05b7\u05dd-\u05d4\u05d5\u05bc\u05d0 \u05de\u05b7\u05d8\u05b0\u05e2\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b8\u05d1\u05b5\u05d0 \u05dc\u05b0\u05d0\u05b8\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05d5 \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b9\u05d0\u05de\u05b6\u05e8 \u05dc\u05b0\u05d0\u05b8\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05d5 \u05d9\u05b8\u05e7\u05bb\u05dd \u05d0\u05b8\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d9\u05b9\u05d0\u05db\u05b7\u05dc \u05de\u05b4\u05e6\u05bc\u05b5\u05d9\u05d3 \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05e0\u05d5\u05b9 \u05d1\u05bc\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05d1\u05bb\u05e8 \u05ea\u05bc\u05b0\u05d1\u05b8\u05e8\u05b2\u05db\u05b7\u05e0\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9 \u05e0\u05b7\u05e4\u05b0\u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05da\u05b8: \u05dc\u05d1\u00a0\u00a0 \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b9\u05d0\u05de\u05b6\u05e8 \u05dc\u05d5\u05b9 \u05d9\u05b4\u05e6\u05b0\u05d7\u05b8\u05e7 \u05d0\u05b8\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05d5 \u05de\u05b4\u05d9-\u05d0\u05b8\u05ea\u05bc\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b9\u05d0\u05de\u05b6\u05e8 \u05d0\u05b2\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d1\u05bc\u05b4\u05e0\u05b0\u05da\u05b8 \u05d1\u05b0\u05db\u05b9\u05e8\u05b0\u05da\u05b8 \u05e2\u05b5\u05e9\u05b8\u05b9\u05d5:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><em>Bereshit \/ Genesis 27:30-32<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em>27:30 Now it came about, as soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, and Jacob had hardly gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came in from his hunting.\u00a0 27:31 Then he also made savory food, and brought it to his father; and he said to his father, \u2018Let my father arise and eat of his son\u2019s game, that you may bless me.\u2019\u00a0 27:32 Isaac his father said to him, \u2018Who are you?\u2019 And he said, \u2018I am your son, your firstborn, Esau.\u2019\u00a0 (NASB)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We pick up the story line in <em>Bereshit \/ Genesis 27:30-32<\/em>, Jacob had just taken the blessing that Isaac had meant for Esav and Esav comes to Isaac with his dinner to receive his blessing.\u00a0 While reading through the blessing Isaac gave to Esav, it is interesting that Isaac gave him a very similar blessing, however, the blessing given to Esav was reversed.\u00a0 Isaac says tells Esav that the fat places of the earth would be his dwelling and then dew from heaven above (<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b7\u05e2\u05b7\u05df \u05d9\u05b4\u05e6\u05b0\u05d7\u05b8\u05e7 \u05d0\u05b8\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05d5 \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b9\u05d0\u05de\u05b6\u05e8 \u05d0\u05b5\u05dc\u05b8\u05d9\u05d5 \u05d4\u05b4\u05e0\u05bc\u05b5\u05d4 \u05de\u05b4\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05de\u05b7\u05e0\u05bc\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b8\u05e8\u05b6\u05e5 \u05d9\u05b4\u05d4\u05b0\u05d9\u05b6\u05d4 \u05de\u05d5\u05b9\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05d1\u05b6\u05da\u05b8 \u05d5\u05bc\u05de\u05b4\u05d8\u05bc\u05b7\u05dc \u05d4\u05b7\u05e9\u05bc\u05c1\u05b8\u05de\u05b7\u05d9\u05b4\u05dd \u05de\u05b5\u05e2\u05b8\u05dc<\/span>). Isaac began the blessing in reverse order indicating that Esav would be blessed in prosperity in this world first.\u00a0 On the other hand, in Jacob\u2019s blessing Isaac said that Jacob would be given the dew of heaven, and then the fat places of the earth would be his dwelling.\u00a0 What is the significance of the word order here in the text?\u00a0 The Scriptures reveal to us that Jacob had focused his attention and life on the Lord (dew from heaven) whereas Esav focused his life on this earth (fat places).\u00a0 Jacob\u2019s blessing of prosperity would come from Heaven first, and then he would partake in the fat places of the earth, in other words, the blessing from heaven will precede his blessing in prosperity on earth.\u00a0 This is consistent with Yeshua\u2019s words in <em>Matthew 6:33<\/em> that say<em> 6:33 \u2018But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. (NASB)<\/em>\u00a0 In addition to this, Jacob left off the blessing of the grain (<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05d3\u05bc\u05d2\u05b8\u05df<\/span>) and new wine (<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05d5\u05b0\u05ea\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05e9\u05c1<\/span>) while blessing Esav.\u00a0 Note the significance of the grain offering in the Tabernacle with regard to the lives of Jacob and Esav here in Parashat Toldot.\u00a0 The grain offering is also known as the <em>\u201cgift offering,\u201d<\/em> and this is a type of offering that scholars believed referred to all voluntary sacrifices (see <em>Vayikra \/ Leviticus<\/em>), the Shelamim Korban (Peace offering) or Todat Korban (Thank Offering).\u00a0 The absence of the grain (<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05d3\u05bc\u05d2\u05b8\u05df<\/span>) in Esav\u2019s blessing may suggests that Esav was not voluntary in his gifts to God because he despised His promises.\u00a0 The common Hebrew word for wine is <span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05d9\u05d9\u05d5<\/span> from the root meaning <em>\u201cto boil up\u201d<\/em> or <em>\u201cto be in ferment.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 It is interesting, here in the text <span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05d5\u05b0\u05ea\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05e9\u05c1<\/span> is used to describe<em> \u201cnew wine.\u201d\u00a0<\/em> It is possible that this word is derived from the root <span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u05dc\u05e8\u05e9\u05ea<\/span> meaning <em>\u201cto inherit.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 The absence of the new wine in Esav\u2019s blessing suggest he will not inherit the promises God had made, he has been trodden down upon by his brother Jacob because he despised God and His covenant promises.\u00a0 The interesting point of studying Jacob and Esav\u2019s lives is that Esav allowed the things of this world to distract him from what is truly important, that is to seek the Lord and to trust in the promises of God.\u00a0 Yeshua said in <em>Matthew 6:31 \u2018Do not worry then, saying, \u2018What will we eat?\u2019 or \u2018What will we drink?\u2019 or \u2018What will we wear for clothing?\u2019\u00a0 6:32 \u2018For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
