These commands form strong parallels to 1 John 2:15\u2019s <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>\u201cDo not love the world or the things in the world.\u201d<\/em><\/span> &#8211; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Torah Parallels to \u201cDo Not Love the World\u201d<\/span> &#8211; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Exclusive Love for God<\/span> (Deuteronomy 6:4\u20135) This foundational commandment (the Shema) demands total devotion, leaving no room for competing loves such as worldly desires. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Warning Against Coveting and Greed<\/span> (Exodus 20:17; Deuteronomy 5:21) The command not to covet your neighbor\u2019s possessions directly resists the <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201clust of the eyes\u201d<\/span><\/em> John warns about. Torah frames desire for material things as destructive to covenant faithfulness. Rejecting Idolatry and Pagan Practices (Exodus 20:3\u20135; Deuteronomy 7:25\u201326; 12:30\u201331) We are forbidden to desire the silver and gold on idols or imitate the nations\u2019 worship. This parallels John\u2019s warning that worldly pride and desires are <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>\u201cnot from the Father.\u201d<\/em><\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Do Not Be Enticed by Wealth or Bribes<\/span> (Exodus 23:8; Deuteronomy 16:19) This reflects the Torah\u2019s concern that material gain can distort loyalty to God, echoing John\u2019s caution against loving <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201cthings in the world.<\/span><\/em>\u201d Choosing Life Over Worldly Temptation (Deuteronomy 30:19\u201320) John\u2019s contrast between the passing world and eternal life mirrors this Torah choice. The Torah doesn\u2019t use the phrase<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em> \u201cdo not love the world,\u201d<\/em> <\/span>but its commands against<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em> \u201ccoveting, idolatry, assimilation, and misplaced desire\u201d<\/em> <\/span>are direct parallels. Both the Torah and John call believers to reject fleeting worldly enticements and instead love God wholeheartedly, because only covenantal loyalty leads to life.
