The Torah repeatedly lays down principles that parallel this idea: living in a way that does not become a snare, burden, or stumbling block to others. – Torah Parallels to “Not Causing Others to Struggle” – Leviticus 19:14 Do Not Put a Stumbling Block, this is the most direct Torah parallel. Paul’s language in Romans 13:13–14 echoes this principle. Exodus 23:4–5 Help, Don’t Hinder (helping with the ox). Instead of adding to another’s struggle, the Torah commands active assistance, even toward an enemy. This anticipates Paul’s ethic of walking honorably and not creating strife. Deuteronomy 22:1–4 Preventing Struggle, the Torah requires proactive responsibility to remove burdens from others, not add to them. The principle is: don’t ignore another’s struggle, and certainly don’t cause it. Numbers 11:4–6, 33 The Mixed Multitude’s Complaints, the people’s grumbling about food created discouragement and stumbling for the whole camp. The Torah shows how negative behavior can spread and cause others to falter. Paul’s warning against “strife and jealousy” mirrors this dynamic. Deuteronomy 27:18 Cursed Is He Who Misleads; this curse reinforces Leviticus 19:14: misleading or burdening others is covenantally condemned. The Torah Principal is Don’t place obstacles, literal or moral, in front of others. Instead, lighten their burdens and act in love. Paul’s Application (Romans 13:13–14) is to live honorably, without strife, jealousy, or indulgence that could cause others to falter. Instead, “put on the Lord Jesus Christ.” Both the Torah and Paul converge on the same ethic: covenantal life is about removing stumbling blocks, not creating them.
