The context is that Israel grew impatient during their journey from Mount Hor, complaining against God and Moses: “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness?” Their grumbling and rejection of divine provision (manna) was seen as testing God’s faithfulness. God sent fiery serpents among them, and many died. Moses was instructed to make a bronze serpent and lift it up, those who looked at it lived. This is the exact episode Paul references. Though he uses “Christ” (some manuscripts say “the Lord”), the theological point is clear. Paul’s use of “tempt Christ” is provocative, it parallels who we are in Christ with the Lord God who sustains us (note 1 Cor. 10:4 “the Rock was Christ”).
