While Paul uses metaphorical language to describe moral transformation, the Torah consistently urges God’s people to reject sin, idolatry, and moral compromise, often using imagery of light vs. darkness, clean vs. unclean, and holy vs. profane. For example, Casting off sin and darkness – “Put away the evil from among you” – Deuteronomy 13:5; 17:7 – Israel is commanded to purge evil from the community, which is decisive rejection of sin – Moral separation – “Be holy, for I am holy” – Leviticus 19:2 – Holiness requires separation from impurity and moral darkness – Rejecting idolatry and corruption – “Do not follow other gods” – Exodus 20:3–5; Deuteronomy 7:25–26 – Idolatry is described as defiling and detestable, works of darkness to be destroyed – Choosing light and life – “Walk in His ways… choose life” – Deuteronomy 30:15–19 – A call to reject death and evil, and walk in righteousness and covenant fidelity. Paul’s metaphor of casting off darkness and putting on light echoes the Torah patterns: Moral clarity and separation from sin, Active purging of evil influences, Daily choice to walk in God’s ways, and Holiness as identity and lifestyle. The Torah doesn’t use the phrase “works of darkness,” but it repeatedly calls Israel to remove, destroy, or purge anything that defiles, whether physical impurity, idolatry, or moral corruption.
