(NASB) <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.matsati.com\/index.php\/category\/bits-of-torah-truths\/ \">https:\/\/www.matsati.com\/index.php\/category\/bits-of-torah-truths\/ <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul\u2019s instruction in 1 Corinthians 7:12\u201313, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>\u201cIf any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away,\u201d<\/em><\/span> is a profound call to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>\u201ccovenantal faithfulness,\u201d<\/em><\/span> even in spiritually mixed marriages. While the Torah doesn\u2019t directly address the believer\/unbeliever dynamic as Paul does, it does offer several <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>\u201cparallels in principle and precedent\u201d<\/em><\/span> that support this ethic of honoring the marital bond when the unbelieving spouse desires peace. In Genesis 16 &amp; 21 \u2013 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Abraham and Hagar<\/span> &#8211; Though Hagar was not part of the covenant line, Abraham did not cast her out until God explicitly instructed him (Gen. 21:12). Even then, it was done with provision and care. This shows that <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>\u201ccovenantal identity did not automatically justify separation\u201d<\/em><\/span> God\u2019s guidance and the other party\u2019s disposition mattered. In Genesis 34 \u2013 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Dinah and Shechem<\/span> &#8211; Shechem, a non-Israelite, desires to marry Dinah and live peaceably with Jacob\u2019s family. While the story ends tragically due to deception, the initial proposal shows that <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>\u201cpeaceful coexistence with non-believers was not inherently forbidden.\u201d<\/em><\/span> In Exodus 12:38 \u2013 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Mixed Multitude<\/span> &#8211; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>\u201cA mixed multitude went up also with them\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/span> At the Exodus, many non-Israelites joined the Israelites. They were not cast out but <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>\u201cwelcomed into the covenant community,\u201d<\/em><\/span> provided they respected its boundaries. This reflects Paul\u2019s ethic: if the unbeliever desires to dwell in peace, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>\u201cdo not separate.\u201d<\/em><\/span> In Deuteronomy 21:10\u201314 \u2013 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Marriage to Captive Women<\/span> &#8211; An Israelite man could marry a foreign woman taken in war, but he had to treat her with dignity. If he later chose to release her, he could not sell or mistreat her. This command emphasizes <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>\u201crespect and restraint,\u201d<\/em><\/span> even in spiritually or culturally mixed unions. Paul, steeped in Torah, does not contradict it but <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>\u201cextends its principles\u201d<\/em><\/span> to the realities of early Messianic communities, where believers often found themselves married to unbelievers.
