For example, Exodus 18:21–22 Moses, following Jethro’s advice, appoints capable men as leaders over the people: “men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain.” These elders were entrusted with judging the people, a role of high responsibility and honor. Leviticus 19:32 “You shall rise before the aged and show deference to the old; you shall fear your God: I am the Lord.” This commandment links reverence for elders with reverence for God, underscoring the spiritual weight of honoring those with wisdom and experience. Numbers 11:16–17 God instructs Moses to gather seventy elders to help bear the burden of leadership. These elders receive a portion of the spirit that was upon Moses, signifying divine endorsement and communal respect. Deuteronomy 27:1 & 31:9 Elders are repeatedly mentioned alongside priests in covenantal and legal matters, indicating their elevated status and the expectation of communal honor. While 1 Timothy 5:17 emphasizes honor especially for those who labor in teaching, the Torah lays the groundwork by establishing elders as pillars of justice, wisdom, and communal stability—worthy of respect, support, and spiritual regard.
