The Torah parallels echo the spirit of “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory.” For example, Numbers 12:3 “Now Moses was very humble, more so than any man on the face of the earth.” Moses’ humility is a central virtue in the Torah. Despite his leadership role, he never sought glory for himself, embodying the very opposite of vainglory. Leviticus 19:18 “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” This commandment promotes selflessness and mutual respect, discouraging actions rooted in rivalry or ego. Genesis 13:8–9 When Abraham and Lot’s herdsmen quarrel, Abraham says, “Let there be no strife between you and me… for we are brethren.” Abraham’s initiative to avoid conflict, even offering Lot the first choice of land, reflects a spirit of peace over pride. Deuteronomy 8:17–18 “You may say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’ But you shall remember the Lord your God…” This warns against arrogance and self-congratulation, urging humility and recognition of divine providence. The difficulty is found in the Torah not using the same phrasing as Philippians, however the ethical foundation—valuing others, avoiding selfish ambition, and walking humbly—is deeply embedded in its teachings.
