For example, in Deuteronomy 10:12-13 we are encouraged to hold fast to the commandments of God as a way to do what is right, “And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to observe the LORD’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?” In Deuteronomy 11:22-23 we read the concept of holding fast to what is good is directly connected to obeying God’s commandments, “If you carefully observe all these commands I am giving you to follow—to love the LORD your God, to walk in obedience to him and to hold fast to him—then the LORD will drive out all these nations before you, and you will dispossess nations larger and stronger than you.” In addition, Deuteronomy 30:19-20 also highlights the importance of choosing and holding fast to what is good, “This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. For the LORD is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” These passages from the Torah illustrate the timeless principle of holding fast to what is good by adhering to God’s commandments, loving Him, and choosing life. This aligns closely with the teachings found in 1 Thessalonians 5:21, emphasizing the importance of discernment and commitment to righteousness.
