(Eph. 5:20; Phil. 4:6; Col. 3:17; 1 Thess. 5:18) This is the action of expressing gratitude to God which is a significant theme throughout the Torah. Deuteronomy 8:10 “When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you.” This verse emphasizes giving thanks to God after enjoying His blessings, paralleling the NT instruction to give thanks in all circumstances. Leviticus 22:29 describes the practice of offering sacrifices of thanksgiving is established, showing gratitude and acknowledging God’s provision. In Exodus 15:1-2 the song of thanks and praise following the crossing of the Red Sea reflects the gratitude for God’s deliverance and protection. In Numbers 6:24-26 this is a blessing which also reflects the reciprocal relationship of gratitude, where the blessings of God are met with praise and thanksgiving. In addition, according to Genesis 8:20 we read, “Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it.” After the flood, Noah’s act of building an altar and offering sacrifices of thanksgiving underscores the importance of gratitude to God for deliverance and blessings. These examples from the Torah illustrate the importance of gratitude and giving thanks to God for His blessings, protection, and provision, paralleling the teachings found in Ephesians 5:20, Philippians 4:6, Colossians 3:17, and 1 Thessalonians 5:18 in the NT text.
