For example, in Leviticus 19:2 “Speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them: ‘Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.’” This verse emphasizes the importance of holiness in the lives of God’s people instructing us to maintain purity in our offerings and interactions. In Exodus 19:5-6 the passage highlights the special status of God’s people as a holy nation, set apart to serve God and represent His holiness to the world. In Numbers 18:8 the verse underscores the concept of holy things being dedicated and given to the priests, who were responsible for handling them with reverence. In Deuteronomy 14:2 “For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. Out of all the peoples on the face of the earth, the Lord has chosen you to be his treasured possession.” This verse reiterates the holiness of God’s people and the special relationship with God, which includes the responsibility to live according to His commandments and to handle holy things appropriately (such as our lives). These Torah passages parallel the NT teachings on giving holy things and emphasize the importance of holiness, purity, and the proper treatment of what is dedicated to God. The underlying principle is the recognition of God’s holiness and the need for His people to reflect that holiness in their actions and offerings.
