He quoted from the Book of Malachi, which prophesied that God would send Elijah before the great and dreadful day of the Lord. He identified John as the Elijah who was to come and said that those who have ears should hear. He also affirmed John\u2019s testimony about himself, that he was not the Christ, but the voice of one crying in the wilderness, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>&#8220;Make straight the way of the Lord,&#8221;<\/em><\/span> as Isaiah the prophet had said.
