#000000;\">This week\u2019s reading portion of Scripture, Parashat Vezot Habrachah meaning <em>\u201cThis is the blessing\u201d<\/em> (<\/span><em>Devarim \/ Deuteronomy 33:1-34:12<\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">) occurs at the same time as Yom Kippur (<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>\u05d9\u05d5\u05dd \u05db\u05d9\u05e4\u05d5\u05e8<\/em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">) <\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u201cDay of Atonement\u201d<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> that is observed on the 10<\/span><sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> day of the month of Tishri concluding 10 days of repentance before God that began with Rosh Hashanah.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Sefer <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><em>Vayikra \/ Leviticus 16<\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> describe the temple service and sacrificial ceremony the Cohen Hagadol (High Priest) is to perform on this day.\u00a0 The day is marked by fasting and prayer of the individual that is committed to forgiving the sins of others and to repent of sins that have been committed against God.\u00a0 In Parashat Vezot Habrachah we read about the death of Moshe (<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b8\u05de\u05b8\u05ea \u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05dd \u05de\u05b9\u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05d4 \u05e2\u05b6\u05d1\u05b6\u05d3-\u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05d5\u05b9\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05d0\u05b6\u05e8\u05b6\u05e5 \u05de\u05d5\u05b9\u05d0\u05b8\u05d1 \u05e2\u05b7\u05dc-\u05e4\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05d5\u05b9\u05b8\u05d4<\/em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">).\u00a0 The scriptures say <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><em>\u201cMoshe, the servant of the Lord died in the land of Moab according to the word of the Lord.\u201d<\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 The Phrase <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>\u05e2\u05b7\u05dc-\u05e4\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05d5\u05b9\u05b8\u05d4<\/em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> literally means <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><em>\u201con \/ upon \/ by the mouth of God,\u201d<\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> here the words <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>\u05e2\u05dc<\/em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> (on, upon) and <\/span><em>\u05e4\u05d9<\/em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> (mouth) are joined together with a maqqef.\u00a0 The phrase <\/span><em>\u05e2\u05b7\u05dc-\u05e4\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9<\/em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> meaning <\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u201cby, based on, according to\u201d<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> says that Moshe died according to the Lord.\u00a0 The Aramaic translation in the Targum Onkelos (<\/span><em>\u05d5\u05bc\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05ea \u05ea\u05bc\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05b8\u05df \u05de\u05b9\u05e9\u05b6\u05d4 \u05e2\u05b7\u05d1\u05b0\u05d3\u05b8\u05d0 \u05d3\u05b7\u05d9\u05d9\u05b8 \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05d0\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05e2\u05b8\u05d0 \u05d3\u05b0\u05de\u05d5\u05b9\u05d0\u05b8\u05d1 \u05e2\u05b7\u05dc \u05de\u05b5\u05d9\u05de\u05b0\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0 \u05d3\u05b7\u05d9\u05d9\u05b8<\/em>) <span style=\"font-size: medium;\">says <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><em>\u201caccording to the Memra (Word) of the Lord.\u201d<\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 The Lord God had spoken to Moshe that he was not going to be allowed to enter into the Promised Land because of having sinned at the waters of Meribah.\u00a0 The death of Moshe is a low point for the Children of Yisrael in the wilderness.\u00a0 In the midst of the narrative from Parashat Vezot Habrachah (<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>\u05d5\u05b0\u05d6\u05b9\u05d0\u05ea \u05d4\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05e8\u05b8\u05db\u05b8\u05d4<\/em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">), the Children of Yisrael are about to enter into the Promised Land and Moshe dying according to the Word of the Lord, we are reminded, on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year, of our need for repentance and forgiveness of our sins before a Holy God.\u00a0 As Yom Kippur approaches, in this time of fasting, repenting, and drawing near to the Lord, let\u2019s consider what a great salvation the Lord God Almighty has provided in His Son, Yeshua the Messiah.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.matsati.com\/index.php\/parashat-vezot-habrachah-yom-kippur-yom-kippur-and-yeshua-the-messiah\/parashat-vezot-habrachah-_2011-2012_\/\"
