Here we read about another promise of hope (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Isaiah.8.1-4?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 8:1-4<\/a>), and also that of destruction (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Isaiah.8.5-8?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 8:5-8<\/a>) due to unfaithfulness and unrepentant sin. The theme continues, the pride of the people prevents them from trusting in the Lord God of Israel. Instead, they trust in their treaties with other nations and in their divinations. John Oswalt points out a parallel between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Isaiah.8.1-4?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 8:1-4<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Isaiah.7.10-17?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">7:10-17<\/a>. This results in some authors believing there is a close connection between the birth, the naming of the child in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Isaiah.7?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 7<\/a>, and the name given here in Isaiah 8. Note <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Isaiah.7.14?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 7:14<\/a> writes, \u05d4\u05b4\u05e0\u05b5\u05bc\u05a3\u05d4 \u05d4\u05b8\u05e2\u05b7\u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05b8\u0597\u05d4 \u05d4\u05b8\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4\u0599 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d9\u05b9\u05dc\u05b6\u05a3\u05d3\u05b6\u05ea \u05d1\u05b5\u05bc\u0594\u05df <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">&#8220;behold the maiden was pregnant and bear a son&#8221;<\/span><\/em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Isaiah.8.3?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 8:3<\/a>, \u05d4\u05b7\u05e0\u05b0\u05bc\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05d0\u05b8\u0594\u05d4 \u05d5\u05b7\u05ea\u05b7\u05bc\u0596\u05d4\u05b7\u05e8 \u05d5\u05b7\u05ea\u05b5\u05bc\u05a3\u05dc\u05b6\u05d3 \u05d1\u05b5\u05bc\u0591\u05df <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">&#8220;the prophetess will be pregnant and bear a son.&#8221;<\/span><\/em> There is a clear similarity but there are also differences in the way the text is written. It is this connection that Ibn Ezra concludes the \u05e2\u05b4\u05de\u05b8\u05bc\u05a5\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc \u05d0\u05b5\u05bd\u05dc Emmanuel was Isaiah&#8217;s son. The point is that this son named \u05de\u05b7\u05d4\u05b5\u05e8 \u05e9\u05b8\u05c1\u05dc\u05b8\u05dc \u05d7\u05b8\u05e9\u05c1 \u05d1\u05b7\u05bc\u05d6 Maher-shalal-hash-baz does not satisfy the Messianic Expectation as Judah and Jerusalem are not free from conflict, they have not been redeemed, and Assyria eventually comes to conquer both Israel and Jerusalem and Judah. These things lead on to a continuing expectation, waiting for that redeemer God will send to save His people. (<\/span><\/em>\u05d5\u05bc\u05db\u05b0\u05ea\u05b9\u05d1 \u05e2\u05b8\u05dc\u05b8\u05d9\u05d5 \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05d7\u05b6\u05e8\u05b6\u05d8 \u05d0\u05b1\u05e0\u05d5\u05b9\u05e9\u05c1 \u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05b7\u05d4\u05b5\u05e8 \u05e9\u05b8\u05c1\u05dc\u05b8\u05dc \u05d7\u05b8\u05e9\u05c1 \u05d1\u05b7\u05bc\u05d6<em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">)&#8221;<\/span><\/em> Here HaShem tells Isaiah to write on a \u05d2\u05b4\u05bc\u05dc\u05b8\u05bc\u05d9\u05d5\u05b9\u05df \u05d2\u05b8\u05bc\u05d3\u05d5\u05b9\u05dc (big scroll) then says \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05d7\u05b6\u05e8\u05b6\u05d8 \u05d0\u05b1\u05e0\u05d5\u05b9\u05e9\u05c1 where \u05d7\u05b6\u05e8\u05b6\u05d8 means pen, and \u05d0\u05b1\u05e0\u05d5\u05b9\u05e9\u05c1 is a noun referring to a human being or a single man. The phrase \u05de\u05b7\u05d4\u05b5\u05a5\u05e8 \u05e9\u05b8\u05c1\u05dc\u05b8\u0596\u05dc \u05d7\u05b8\u05a5\u05e9\u05c1 \u05d1\u05b7\u05bc\u05bd\u05d6 Maher-shalal-hash-baz actually means something. This phrase means <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201churry<\/span><\/em> (\u05de\u05b7\u05d4\u05b5\u05a5\u05e8) <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">the spoils<\/span><\/em> (\u05e9\u05b8\u05c1\u05dc\u05b8\u05dc) <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">hurry <\/span><\/em>(\u05d7\u05b8\u05e9\u05c1) <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">the plunder<\/span><\/em> (\u05d1\u05b7\u05bc\u05d6)<em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">.\u201d<\/span><\/em> There are two words of interest here, the first \u05de\u05b7\u05d4\u05b5\u05a5\u05e8 is a common Hebrew word occurring 54 times in the Tanakh, means to hurry. Here Isaiah speaks in the first person of God speaking directly to him. This indicates that Isaiah will also become a sign unto the people. The idea of taking a \u05d2\u05b4\u05bc\u05dc\u05b8\u05bc\u05d9\u05d5\u05b9\u05df \u05d2\u05b8\u05bc\u05d3\u05d5\u05b9\u05dc (big scroll) means there is going to be a lot for the prophet to write down. The word \u05d2\u05b4\u05bc\u05dc\u05b8\u05bc\u05d9\u05d5\u05b9\u05df according to BDB means <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201ctable, tablet\u201d<\/span><\/em> and so this may suggest that HaShem is asking Isaiah to post this for the people to see and for all to be able to read. The idea \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05d7\u05b6\u05e8\u05b6\u05d8 \u05d0\u05b1\u05e0\u05d5\u05b9\u05e9\u05c1 may be a way of saying to write it not just upon a \u05d2\u05b4\u05bc\u05dc\u05b8\u05bc\u05d9\u05d5\u05b9\u05df \u05d2\u05b8\u05bc\u05d3\u05d5\u05b9\u05dc <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201ca big tablet\u201d<\/span><\/em> but that it is large enough and in the common language so everyone can see and read. We also note that the phrase \u05de\u05b7\u05d4\u05b5\u05a5\u05e8 \u05e9\u05b8\u05c1\u05dc\u05b8\u0596\u05dc \u05d7\u05b8\u05a5\u05e9\u05c1 \u05d1\u05b7\u05bc\u05bd\u05d6 Maher-shalal-hash-baz is prefixed with a preposition \u05dc\u05b0 (lamed) which can have the meaning <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cto, towards, until, for, away, form, into, of, about\u201d<\/span><\/em> and God may be saying that this what he is to write is concerning the speediness of plunder and spoil that are to be obtained. If this was meant as an indication of the <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cname\u201d<\/span><\/em> of the child, then obviously it may be that this is not just predicting the birth of the child but of the impending defeat of Syria and Israel by Assyria. As the text continues, the parallel does as well as Isaiah writes that before the child reaches a certain age, Samaria and Damascus will cease being a threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-right is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u05e1\u05e4\u05e8 \u05d9\u05e9\u05e2\u05d9\u05d4 \u05e4\u05e8\u05e7 \u05d7<br><\/strong>\u05d1 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b8\u05e2\u05b4\u05d9\u05d3\u05b8\u05d4 \u05dc\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9 \u05e2\u05b5\u05d3\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05e0\u05b6\u05d0\u05b1\u05de\u05b8\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05d0\u05b5\u05ea \u05d0\u05d5\u05bc\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05bc\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d4\u05b7\u05db\u05bc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b5\u05df \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05d6\u05b0\u05db\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05d9\u05b8\u05d4\u05d5\u05bc \u05d1\u05bc\u05b6\u05df \u05d9\u05b0\u05d1\u05b6\u05e8\u05b6\u05db\u05b0\u05d9\u05b8\u05d4\u05d5\u05bc:<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Isaiah.8.2?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 8:2<\/a> states, <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cAnd I took unto me faithful witnesses to record, (<\/span><\/em>\u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b8\u05e2\u05b4\u05d9\u05d3\u05b8\u05d4 \u05dc\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9 \u05e2\u05b5\u05d3\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05e0\u05b6\u05d0\u05b1\u05de\u05b8\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">) Uriah the priest, and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah. The Peal verb form represents the basic action of the syriac verb, and it is active in the sense of performing the action of the verb. The LXX \u03bc\u03ac\u03c1\u03c4\u03c5\u03c1\u1f70\u03c2 is a noun, accusative, plural, masculine meaning <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cwitness\u201d<\/span><\/em> where the phrase \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u03bc\u03ac\u03c1\u03c4\u03c5\u03c1\u1f70\u03c2 \u03bc\u03bf\u03b9 \u03c0\u03bf\u03af\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2 \u1f00\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03ce\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cand witness I will make\/do the trustworthy\/faithful man\u201d<\/span><\/em> indicating the approach that Isaiah is taking is to be intentional to obey the Torah command in bringing these witnesses. What is interesting about this particular aspect of the text is that nowhere else is a prophetic writing witness according to the Scriptures. So this child\u2019s name is representative of what is about to take place as a sign to Ahaz and the priest. The Tanakh doesn&#8217;t seem to provide much information for who <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">&#8220;the prophetess&#8221;<\/span><\/em> (\u05d4\u05b7\u05e0\u05b0\u05bc\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05d0\u05b8\u05d4) in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Isaiah.8.3?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 8:3<\/a> is. Who is she? Many seem to assert that she is his wife,but cite no evidence to support this. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/II_Kings.22.14?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2 Kings 22:14<\/a>, we read about how Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Akbor, Shaphan and Asaiah went to speak to the prophet Huldah, who was the wife of Shallum son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Nehemiah.6.14?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nehemiah 6:14<\/a> the prophet speaks of Tobiah and Sanballat, and the female prophet Noadiah and how she and the rest of the prophets have been trying to intimidate Nehemiah. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/II_Chronicles.34.22?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2 Chronicles 34:22<\/a>, is another record of Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Akbor, Shaphan and Asaiah going to speak to the prophet Huldah. The idea though is that this word \u05d4\u05b7\u05e0\u05b0\u05bc\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05d0\u05b8\u059c\u05d4 is spoken of infrequently and so who this prophetess is remains a question. This is a parallel to the \u05d4\u05b8\u05e2\u05b7\u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05b8\u0597\u05d4 the Almah, the young maiden, an unknown woman. The idea is that either the wife of Isaiah being called \u05d4\u05b7\u05e0\u05b0\u05bc\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05d0\u05b8\u059c\u05d4 due to her being the wife of the prophet, or that she was a prophet herself. Note that from the time a child is born until the time he is able to speak, or at least call out the name of mom and dad, there is a period of within the first year. HaShem tells Isaiah that before this child can do this, the riches of Damascus and the spoils of Samaria will be taken away by the king of Assyria. We note the uncertainty in the prophecy that is given to Isaiah concerning the child. The mystery is what fuels the future Expectation. This requires a trust in God and in the one whom the Lord brings to redeem His people. Ahaz and the people of Judah and Jerusalem missed the point, that faith and trust in the Lord are what the scriptures call all peoples to have towards God in heaven. (KJV)&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul wrote according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romans+10%3A8-17&amp;version=KJV;SBLGNT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Romans 10:8-17<\/a>, specifically <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">&#8220;For Isaiah says, &#8216;Lord, who has believed our report?&#8217; So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.&#8221;<\/span><\/em>&nbsp; Those who hear the voice of God and of His Messiah, are those who hear the Word of God preached, or read. Faith comes by hearing the Word of God. Doubt and unbelief come from listening to what the world has to say, the world&#8217;s opinions and ideas, liberal ideologies, and the lies of the evil one. Faith means simply <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201dbelieving, trusting, and living in a way that speaks to our faith, that God will do what He says He will do.\u201d<\/span><\/em> Our faith in God is built on what we know about Him and His plan for us and His will for our lives. This may have been one of the major issues with Judah and Jerusalem that the Word of God was not read, studied, or sought after, and so knowledge of the Lord was gone, and consequently what Paul says in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romans+10&amp;version=KJV;SBLGNT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Romans 10<\/a> couldn\u2019t take place. The pool was fed by the waters of the Gihon, carried there by the Siloam tunnel that was built under Hezekiah\u2019s reign. The word \u05d4\u05b7\u05e9\u05b4\u05bc\u05c1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d7\u05b7 occurs 9 times written this way. The verse in which this word is used as a Messianic Expectation was when Jacob was blessing each of his children before he died in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Genesis.49.10?lang=bi&amp;aliyot=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bereshit \/Genesis 49:10<\/a> <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cThe scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a Lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come. And the obedience of the peoples to him. (NKJV)&#8221;<\/span><\/em> Jacob\u2019s blessing includes the descendents of Judah being strong and receiving the praise of the other tribes of Israel (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Genesis.49.2?lang=bi&amp;aliyot=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bereshit \/ Genesis 49:8-9<\/a>). This was fulfilled in the days of David, who was a mighty warrior and king, and the promise was that through him the Messiah would come. When the Messiah Yeshua&nbsp; came, the scepter to rule was in his hands, never to depart from Judah as he remains a Jewish man from the tribe of Judah, and as King of kings and Lord of Lords he remains in power even up until this day! Yeshua is the teacher of Torah, of truth, of righteousness and holiness, according to God\u2019s holy word.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Isaiah.8.6-7?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 8:6-7<\/a> we see God\u2019s faithfulness in the waters of Shiloah, as the Lord continued to provide drink for the people in the city which was under siege. Even though they have this blessing, they trust in Assyria, therefore this prophetic son who is named \u05de\u05b7\u05d4\u05b5\u05e8 \u05e9\u05b8\u05c1\u05dc\u05b8\u05dc \u05d7\u05b8\u05e9\u05c1 \u05d1\u05b7\u05bc\u05d6 Maher-shalal-hash-baz <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201churry to booty, speedy to spoils\u201d<\/span><\/em> this prophecy against Syria and Ephraim will turn against them as well. Commentators believe that there is some time between the birth of \u05e2\u05b4\u05de\u05b8\u05bc\u05a5\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc \u05d0\u05b5\u05bd\u05dc (Emmanuel) and \u05de\u05b7\u05d4\u05b5\u05e8 \u05e9\u05b8\u05c1\u05dc\u05b8\u05dc \u05d7\u05b8\u05e9\u05c1 \u05d1\u05b7\u05bc\u05d6 Maher-shalal-hash-baz. Others believe this is one and the same child. The prophecy draws upon the idea of flood waters that come when one is unaware to be utterly destroyed. The river has the power to sweep away everything, man, woman, child, house, and beast. There is a parallel to Parashat Korach when the ground opened up and swallowed everything, just like we can see here in the analogy of the river, death and destruction, descending into hell due to pride and sin. For those who trust in the Lord, these things do not happen! This phrase \u05d5\u05bc\u05de\u05b0\u05e9\u05c2\u05a5\u05d5\u05b9\u05e9\u05c2 \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea\u05be\u05e8\u05b0\u05e6\u05b4\u0596\u05d9\u05df \u05d5\u05bc\u05d1\u05b6\u05df\u05be\u05e8\u05b0\u05de\u05b7\u05dc\u05b0\u05d9\u05b8\u05bd\u05d4\u05d5\u05bc we note that \u05de\u05b0\u05e9\u05c2\u05a5\u05d5\u05b9\u05e9\u05c2 is a noun, common, singular, construct meaning <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cjoy\u201d<\/span><\/em> and the direct object \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea identifies the source of their joy, that of Rezin and the son of Remaliah. Again, this joy is not in the Lord God of Israel, but in their agreement with Assyria. This draws in the concept of pride as their delivery was due to their own wisdom and cunning diplomacy as opposed to the God in heaven who is their protection. (<\/span><\/em>\u05de\u05b0\u05dc\u05b9\u05d0-\u05e8\u05b9\u05d7\u05b7\u05d1 \u05d0\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05e6\u05b0\u05da\u05b8 \u05e2\u05b4\u05de\u05b8\u05bc\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc\u05d0\u05b5\u05dc<em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">)\u201d<\/span><\/em> Here the prophecy becomes clear, this flood will go through Judah and overtake her. The differences here could be simply referring to the God who is with us, his wings are spread as broad as the land, there is no escaping His power and might. The LHB combining these words to make one-word \u05e2\u05b4\u05de\u05b8\u05bc\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc\u05d0\u05b5\u05dc (Emmanuel) suggests this has become the name of the child. Looking at Ginsburg\u2019s MSS we find separate words on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Isaiah.7.14?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">7:14<\/a>, however there is a note in the marginal masorah and indicates there are some MSS that write as joined words, the two sources are according to the Complutensian polyglot and second edition of rabbinic Bible. The polyglot and rabbinic Bibles are later copies of the biblical text. So, it seems like this is really a typesetting issue in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Isaiah.7.14?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 7:14<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Isaiah.8.8?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">8:8<\/a> where the original is separated words. Ginsburg\u2019s MSS on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Isaiah.8.8?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 8:8<\/a> actually show the words Emmanuel (\u05e2\u05b4\u05de\u05b8\u05bc\u05a5\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc \u05d0\u05b5\u05bd\u05dc) as separate words contrary to what the LHB is showing. In addition, Ginsburg also shows no note on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Isaiah.8.8?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 8:8<\/a> on these words. So, it is likely this is simply an issue of typesetting according to the LHB, Complutensian polyglot, and second edition of rabbinic Bibles. Noticing these differences are very important for us to know, why do you think that is? The most interesting outcome of this observation on the biblical text writing as \u05e2\u05b4\u05de\u05b8\u05bc\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc\u05d0\u05b5\u05dc verses \u05e2\u05b4\u05de\u05b8\u05bc\u05a5\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc \u05d0\u05b5\u05bd\u05dc, provides us with an answer to anti-missionaries. Based upon the LHB translation, it is possible for the anti-missionary to deceive someone saying that the Messiah spoken of here must be named \u05e2\u05b4\u05de\u05b8\u05bc\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc\u05d0\u05b5\u05dc Emmanuel and not Yeshua, and so Yeshua could not be the Messiah. The point of this insight is that Ginsburg\u2019s MSS attests that the writing of the words together \u05e2\u05b4\u05de\u05b8\u05bc\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc\u05d0\u05b5\u05dc is actually a typesetting issue in the LHB and does not provide a proof for the name of the Messiah being \u05e2\u05b4\u05de\u05b8\u05bc\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc\u05d0\u05b5\u05dc Emmanuel. These words \u05e2\u05b4\u05de\u05b8\u05bc\u05a5\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc \u05d0\u05b5\u05bd\u05dc were originally written separately in both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Isaiah.7.14?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 7:14<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Isaiah.8.8?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">8:8<\/a>! Our conclusion is \u201cYeshua Hu Hamoshiakh!\u201d (Yeshua he is the Messiah!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea of the flood going up to the neck, this parallels the idea of coming near to death. The promise of God is coupled here from the sense of not bringing Judah to utter destruction. There are many examples from the Scriptures that speak of the wings of God, for example from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.matsati.com\/index.php\/tehillim-psalms-17-part-2-for-those-who-take-refuge-at-your-right-hand\/\">Tehillim \/ Psalms 17<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.matsati.com\/index.php\/tehillim-psalms-91-part-2-the-significance-of-both-the-spiritual-and-physical-realms\/\">91<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Ruth.2?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ruth 2<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Tehillim \/ Psalm 17:7-9&nbsp;<\/strong><br> 17:7 \u201cShow Your marvelous lovingkindness by Your right hand, O You who save those who trust in You From those who rise up against them. 17:8 Keep me as the apple of Your eye; (KJV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Luke 8:43-44<\/strong><br> 8:43&nbsp; And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any, 8:44&nbsp; Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched. (KJV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>We note that according to Mark this idea of touching the border of the garment was a practice that was taking place for people to be healed, this was not something that was innovative by the woman with the issue of blood. The one with the issue of blood however is the most famous passage whereby we remember this miracle. The question may be asked: <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cwhy did the people of the first century believe touching the fringes led to healing?\u201d<\/span><\/em> It is interesting that the word for the fringes in Greek is \u03ba\u03c1\u03b1\u03c3\u03c0\u03b5\u03b4\u03bf\u03c5 (kraspedon), the same word is used in the LXX for the Hebrew word tzitzit (\u05e6\u05d9\u05e6\u05d9\u05ea, see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Numbers.15.38?lang=bi&amp;aliyot=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bamidbar \/ Numbers 15:38<\/a>). (KJV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Notice here that the <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cquarters\u201d<\/span><\/em> or <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201ccorners\u201d<\/span><\/em> are described as \u05db\u05b7\u05bc\u05e0\u05b0\u05e4\u05a5\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cwings\u201d<\/span><\/em> detailing how the commandments illustrated by the tzitzit are connected to the four corners. Today this is known as a tallit (\u05d8\u05b7\u05dc\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9\u05ea). We note the biblical prophecy from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Malachi.3.20?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Malachai 4:2<\/a> <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cBut for you who fear my name, the servant of righteousness shall rise with healing in the corners (of his garment).\u201d<\/span><\/em> We note that the people of the first century were waiting on the Messiah to come with healing in his wings according to Malachai. This is a significant aspect of the context of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Isaiah+7+%2C+isaiah+8&amp;version=KJV;WLC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 7 and 8<\/a> in relation to Emmanuel, the child that will be born. The point of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Isaiah.8.8?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 8:8<\/a>, \u05d5\u05b0\u05d7\u05b8\u05dc\u05b7\u05e3 \u05d1\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05bc\u05d3\u05b8\u05d4 \u05e9\u05b8\u05c1\u05d8\u05b7\u05e3 \u05d5\u05b0\u05e2\u05b8\u05d1\u05b7\u05e8 \u05e2\u05b7\u05d3-\u05e6\u05b7\u05d5\u05b8\u05bc\u05d0\u05e8 \u05d9\u05b7\u05d2\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9\u05e2\u05b7 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d4\u05b8\u05d9\u05b8\u05d4 \u05de\u05bb\u05d8\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05db\u05b0\u05bc\u05e0\u05b8\u05e4\u05b8\u05d9\u05d5 \u05de\u05b0\u05dc\u05b9\u05d0-\u05e8\u05b9\u05d7\u05b7\u05d1 \u05d0\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05e6\u05b0\u05da\u05b8 \u05e2\u05b4\u05de\u05b8\u05bc\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc\u05d0\u05b5\u05dc <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cAnd he shall pass through Judah; he shall overflow and go over, he shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel\u201d<\/span><\/em> is that this flood warriors will come but will fall short of total destruction. God\u2019s promises will be kept to Abraham, and these things illustrate the love that God has for His people. And if the people would repent and turn from their evil ways, the Lord would bring healing to their land and protection from their enemies. The last word of the verse in Isaiah 8:8 mentioning \u05e2\u05b4\u05de\u05b8\u05bc\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc\u05d0\u05b5\u05dc suggests that this attack from the nations is against Emmanuel as the leader of God\u2019s people who was to deliver the nation from her enemies. The point is that this context suggests that this Emmanuel cannot be a reference to Isaiah\u2019s son, or even to some unknown son of Ahaz. This context forces the interpretation of the Messianic Expectation, to be referring to the Messiah. This draws in the nature of God\u2019s Messiah, as knowing him we know the Father who is in heaven, and that it is in the Messiah that all hope resides! In the Messiah, God is with us! We observe the historical narrative perspective, the Peshat, it was because of Israel\u2019s sins that caused her enemies to come upon her and destroy and kill. We note that sin allows the enemy to come in and wreak havoc in our lives! From the sense of girding one\u2019s self (\u05d4\u05b4\u05ea\u05b0\u05d0\u05b7\u05d6\u05b0\u05bc\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc) there are a couple of scenarios. We note that this indicated to us our deliverance is by the power of God and our willingness to submit our lives to Him, to His Messiah, and to His holy Word. We note what Peter writes in his epistle explaining that Judgment begins at the house of God. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Peter+4%3A17&amp;version=KJV;SBLGNT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1 Peter 4:17<\/a>). The people in this time were facing persecution for their faith and struggling to separate themselves from the way of the world and their former sins. Peter reminds the people that the wicked will face judgment (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Peter+4%3A5&amp;version=KJV;SBLGNT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1 Peter 4:5<\/a>) and how God\u2019s people who are in the Messiah Yeshua are held to a higher standard. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Peter+4%3A12&amp;version=KJV;SBLGNT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1 Peter 4:12<\/a>) Note Isaiah is explaining to us that judgment is unto salvation when God is with us! We remember that Uriah is a prophet mentioned in the Book of Jeremiah. He is described as being the son of Shemaiah from Kiriath-Jearim. the timeframe of the prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah. This has led some commentators to question the narrative of Isaiah as having multiple redactors. We can\u2019t neglect that this was a function of the inspiration of God for an event that is going to take place in the future. (The point is to err on the side of faith and not on the side of the lack of faith!) The Lord said to me: Go up against this land and destroy it\u201d (II Kings 18:25). What is this command to destroy the land? Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi explains: It is referring to the fact that he heard the prophet who said: \u201cSince the people rejected the waters of Shiloah that flow slowly and rejoice with Rezin and the son of Remaliah. Now therefore, behold, the Lord brings upon them\u2026the king of Assyria\u201d (Isaiah 8:6\u20137).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that the emissary of Sennacherib is quoted as saying according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/II_Kings.18.25?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2 Kings 18:25<\/a> <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cFurthermore, have I come to attack and destroy this place without word from the LORD? The LORD himself told me to march against this country and destroy it.&#8221; (NIV)<\/span><\/em> It is interesting that even the enemy speaks prophetically of the Lord calling this distant nation to attack. For the nature of the rejection see note at 7.13.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The JPS concludes the waters that run from the spring into Jerusalem, the waters of Gihon symbolize the presence of God and that the people don&#8217;t recognize this fact. (This was taken for granted.) Could there be an application today for us, the food and water we have on our tables each day, how truly thankful are we each day for these things? [One sixtieth of his wings, symbolizing] one sixtieth of Sennacherib\u2019s forces.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Rashi looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Isaiah.8.8?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 8:8<\/a> and the word \u05de\u05bb\u05d8\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05db\u05b0\u05bc\u05e0\u05b8\u05e4\u05b8\u05d9\u05d5 and relates the size of the wings and the connection to Sennacherib\u2019s forces. The wings of a bird carries with it quite a few analogies, one is to being under the covering wing of God (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.matsati.com\/index.php\/tehillim-psalms-91-part-2-the-significance-of-both-the-spiritual-and-physical-realms\/\">Tehillim \/ Psalms 91:4<\/a>), in His protection, another is to being carried like eagles wings out of Egypt (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Exodus.19.4?lang=bi&amp;aliyot=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shemot \/ Exodus 19:4<\/a>), and the third is to cleanse of Metzora (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Leviticus.14.1-9?lang=bi&amp;aliyot=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vayikra \/ Leviticus 14:1-9<\/a>), all of these come from Torah examples. Thus the priest shall look, and if the infection of leprosy has been healed in the leper, 14:4 then the priest shall give orders to take two live clean birds and cedar wood and a scarlet string and hyssop for the one who is to be cleansed. 14:5 \u201cThe priest shall also give orders to slay the one bird in an earthenware vessel over running water. 14:6 \u201cAs for the live bird, he shall take it together with the cedar wood and the scarlet string and the hyssop, and shall dip them and the live bird in the blood of the bird that was slain over the running water. 14:7 \u201cHe shall then sprinkle seven times the one who is to be cleansed from the leprosy and shall pronounce him clean, and shall let the live bird go free over the open field. 14:8 \u201cThe one to be cleansed shall then wash his clothes and shave off all his hair and bathe in water and be clean. Now afterward, he may enter the camp, but he shall stay outside his tent for seven days. 14:9 \u201cIt will be on the seventh day that he shall shave off all his hair: he shall shave his head and his beard and his eyebrows, even all his hair. (NASB)&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In the process of the cleansing from Metzora, the wing tips are dipped into the blood along with the scarlet, hyssop, and cedar wood, and the blood is sprinkled over the one with Metzora and he is cleansed. He takes the cedar, the myrtle and the tongue of wool and binds them in the end of the tongue, and circles them with the wing tips and the tail tip of the second (living) bird, and he dips (them into the blood of the slaughtered bird), and he sprinkles (upon the leper). &#8220;in the blood&#8221;: I might think in the blood, exclusively; it is, therefore, written &#8220;living water.&#8221; If &#8220;water,&#8221; I might think &#8220;living water,&#8221; exclusively; it is, therefore, written &#8220;blood.&#8221; How is this effected? With living water in which the blood of the bird is discernible, which the sages estimated to be a quarter (of a log).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>We note that the miracle of healing from Metzora is something only God can accomplish! This is a miracle of Messianic proportions!&nbsp; How fitting would these things tie into the Isaiah story! The one with Metzora who was healed, and then cleansed, is told to bathe in \u05de\u05d9\u05dd \u05d7\u05d9\u05d9\u05dd (living waters). This parallels Yeshua saying in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+4%3A14&amp;version=KJV;SBLGNT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 4:14<\/a>, <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">&#8220;Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you without money, come, buy, and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost,&#8221;<\/span><\/em> quoting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Isaiah.58.11?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 58:11<\/a>. He is mentioned here because he is to serve as a sign that Jerusalem will be delivered out of the hand of Pekah, Rezin and Sennacherib, even after the conquest of Damascus and Samaria.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It is obvious that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Targum_Jonathan_on_Isaiah.8.1?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 8<\/a> connects back to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Targum_Jonathan_on_Isaiah.7.1?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 7<\/a>, both Rashi and Ibn Ezra point this out in their commentaries. Reading their commentaries, we receive a particular insight, notice how Rashi says Emmanuel is of Judah and Ibn Ezra discusses the idea that he is related to the deliverance of God&#8217;s people. Both of these commentaries connect the \u05e2\u05b4\u05de\u05b8\u05bc\u05a5\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc \u05d0\u05b5\u05bd\u05dc (Emmanuel) to the Messianic Expectation, the one who is from the tribe of Judah, and the one who delivers God\u2019s people.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Targum_Jonathan_on_Isaiah.8.9?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 8:9<\/a> states, \u05d8&nbsp; \u05d0\u05b4\u05ea\u05b0\u05d7\u05b7\u05d1\u05b8\u05bc\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc \u05e2\u05b7\u05de\u05b0\u05de\u05b7\u05d9\u05b8\u05d0 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b4\u05ea\u05b0\u05d1\u05b8\u05bc\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b8\u05e6\u05b4\u05d9\u05ea\u05d5\u05bc \u05db\u05b9\u05bc\u05dc \u05d3\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d1\u05b4\u05e1\u05b0\u05d9\u05b8\u05e4\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d0\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05e2\u05b8\u05d0 \u05d0\u05b7\u05ea\u05b0\u05e7\u05b4\u05d9\u05e4\u05d5\u05bc \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b4\u05ea\u05b0\u05d1\u05b8\u05bc\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc \u05d0\u05b7\u05ea\u05b0\u05e7\u05b4\u05d9\u05e4\u05d5\u05bc \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b4\u05ea\u05b0\u05d1\u05b8\u05bc\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc:&nbsp; <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">8:9 Associate yourselves, O ye people, yet ye shall be broken; and give ear all who are at the ends of the earth, strengthen yourselves, yet ye shall be broken, strengthen yourselves, yet ye shall be broken.<\/span><\/em> \u05d9&nbsp; \u05d0\u05b4\u05ea\u05b0\u05de\u05b0\u05dc\u05b4\u05d9\u05db\u05d5\u05bc \u05de\u05b0\u05dc\u05b7\u05da\u05b0 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d9\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05d3\u05b5\u05d9 \u05de\u05b7\u05dc\u05b4\u05dc\u05d5\u05bc \u05e4\u05b4\u05bc\u05ea\u05b0\u05d2\u05b8\u05de\u05b8\u05d0 \u05d5\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05d0 \u05d9\u05b4\u05ea\u05b0\u05e7\u05b7\u05d9\u05b5\u05dd \u05d0\u05b2\u05e8\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d1\u05b0\u05e1\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05d3\u05b8\u05e0\u05b8\u05d0 \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b8\u05d4\u05b8\u05d0:&nbsp; <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">8:10 Take counsel together, yet it shall pass away; speak the word, and it shall not be established, because God is our help. (TgJ)<\/span><\/em> It is strange how in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Targum_Jonathan_on_Isaiah.8.10?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 8:10<\/a> TgJ does not transliterate the words \u05e2\u05b4\u05de\u05b8\u05bc\u05a5\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc \u05d0\u05b5\u05bd\u05dc (Emmanuel) that we find in verse 10. He concludes that \u05e2\u05b4\u05de\u05b8\u05bc\u05a5\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc \u05d0\u05b5\u05bd\u05dc which translates as <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cGod with us\u201d<\/span><\/em> is indication of His presence being in our midst and being present He will also be our help. Note that the Lord God does not remain in a place without being involved in that place. This again speaks to our relationship with God, that we should be ever growing in our service to the Lord! These words are repeated twice, to indicate that they should be perpetually armed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>So Ibn Ezra points out the word \u05d4\u05b4\u05ea\u05b0\u05d0\u05b7\u05d6\u05b0\u05bc\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc (gird yourselves) and we note this is repeated (written twice) in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Targum_Jonathan_on_Isaiah.8.9?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 8:9<\/a>. (KJV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>We note the significance of Paul\u2019s words in light of what we have been reading in the book of Isaiah thus far. Paul lays down the foundation of a life of faith and faithfulness unto God. The people of Isaiah\u2019s time missed these significant points, how great the nation could be who seeks the Lord, just as we read in Isaiah\u2019s opening chapters, that the nations would stream to Jerusalem, if she had only sought the truth of God as opposed to the idols of the nations. Paul writes of the power, the might, and the strength of God, and of having these things when we put on the whole armor of God. Ibn Ezra reminds us \u05d4\u05b4\u05ea\u05b0\u05d0\u05b7\u05d6\u05b0\u05bc\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc (gird yourselves) and of girding ourselves so that we may be perpetually armed. See the connection to Paul\u2019s words in relation to the armor of God. The power of God in our lives enables us to stand in the day of evil (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Ephesians+6%3A13&amp;version=KJV;SBLGNT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">6:13<\/a>). Paul speaks of the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. He speaks of righteousness, which are the ways of God. He speaks of perseverance and prayer and of the salvation that God has brought to our lives through His Son Yeshua (Jesus). All of these things speak to the need for our being diligent to seek the Lord God Almighty in heaven by faith in His holy Words, and in His Son Yeshua the Messiah. This faith that we have is coupled to patience, to waiting upon the Lord, and living our lives in a way that honor\u2019s God and His Word regardless of the situation. All of these things that we are studying speak to the deliverance God is going to bring for His people, of the Messianic Expectation, and the joy of deliverance. Maimonides writes that the person who does not believe in the Messiah and awaits His coming denies the Torah. Suffering is bound up with hope, sanctifying the name is with hope, the merit of the fathers with hope, and the desire of the World to Come with hope. Thus it is written [in Isaiah 26:8], \u201cIndeed, while following the way of Your judgments, O LORD, we have hope for You eagerly; Your name, even Your memory, is the desire of our souls.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>We note how this hope involves having faith and waiting upon the Lord. We also note that all of this hope that we have and waiting upon the Lord, these things are not done passively, but actively in service to God. We have the hope of salvation in Yeshua the Messiah, this is a NT promise. The Messiah is the hope of Israel, we wait for Yeshua, we wait on His mighty return, the hope of our salvation. As the people of God, we should not forget these things in the business of life. We live with anticipation, but we also live with perseverance and equipping ourselves for war in the spiritual realm. We equip ourselves for anything that comes our way when we remain in God\u2019s holy Word! Notice the Torah connection to all of these things, and the truth of the words Maimonides speaks saying that a person who does not believe in the Messiah and awaits his coming is as one who denies the Torah! The Torah which is the foundation stone upon which all of the Scriptures stand! These things all speak to the power of the present day with God\u2019s presence in our lives, and the hope of the future with the knowledge of the past, of suffering, persecutions, and the covenant of our fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and of the Olam Haba (the Word to Come).
