In this week\u2019s Torah portion, Moshe gives some words of encouragement (Devari<\/a>m \/ Deuteronomy 31:1-13), God tells Moshe how Israel will fall away into sin (Devarim \/ Deuteronomy 31:14-22<\/a>), and Joshua is commissioned to lead Israel into the Promised Land. Joshua is the one who will cross ahead of you, just as the Lord has spoken. 31:4 \u2018The Lord will do to them just as He did to Sihon and Og, the kings of the Amorites, and to their land, when He destroyed them. 31:5 \u2018The Lord will deliver them up before you, and you shall do to them according to all the commandments which I have commanded you. 31:6 \u2018Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble at them, for the Lord your God is the one who goes with you. Joshua is the one who will cross ahead of you, just as the Lord has spoken.\u201d<\/span><\/em> The sages say Moshe\u2019s Words in the context of God going before the people into the Promised Land, when Moshe said \u05db\u05bc\u05b7\u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05e8 \u05d3\u05bc\u05b4\u05d1\u05bc\u05b6\u05e8 \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05d5\u05b9\u05b8\u05d4 this was a reference to Devarim \/ Deuteronomy 18<\/a> and the promise of a prophet like Moshe. Joshua functions as a messiah for Israel, leading them in the ways of God, in His truth, and life! We note, this suggests there is a messianic promise that is illustrated in the statement that God will go before us to fight our battles! We note this is similar to what we read according to Shemot \/ Exodus 13:21<\/a>, \u05db\u05d0 \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d4\u05b9\u05dc\u05b5\u05da\u05b0 \u05dc\u05b4\u05e4\u05b0\u05e0\u05b5\u05d9\u05d4\u05b6\u05dd \u05d9\u05d5\u05b9\u05de\u05b8\u05dd \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05e2\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc\u05d3 \u05e2\u05b8\u05e0\u05b8\u05df \u05dc\u05b7\u05e0\u05b0\u05d7\u05b9\u05ea\u05b8\u05dd \u05d4\u05b7\u05d3\u05bc\u05b6\u05e8\u05b6\u05da\u05b0 \u05d5\u05b0\u05dc\u05b7\u05d9\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05e2\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc\u05d3 \u05d0\u05b5\u05e9\u05c1 \u05dc\u05b0\u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8 \u05dc\u05b8\u05d4\u05b6\u05dd \u05dc\u05b8\u05dc\u05b6\u05db\u05b6\u05ea \u05d9\u05d5\u05b9\u05de\u05b8\u05dd \u05d5\u05b8\u05dc\u05b8\u05d9\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05d4: \u05db\u05d1 \u05dc\u05b9\u05d0-\u05d9\u05b8\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05e9\u05c1 \u05e2\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc\u05d3 \u05d4\u05b6\u05e2\u05b8\u05e0\u05b8\u05df \u05d9\u05d5\u05b9\u05de\u05b8\u05dd \u05d5\u05b0\u05e2\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc\u05d3 \u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b5\u05e9\u05c1 \u05dc\u05b8\u05d9\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05d4 \u05dc\u05b4\u05e4\u05b0\u05e0\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d4\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05dd: 21 And the Lord was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead them on the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, so that they might travel by day and by night. 22 He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from the presence of the people. (NASB)<\/span><\/em> Here Moshe states \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b6\u05d9\u05da\u05b8 \u05d4\u05d5\u05bc\u05d0 | \u05e2\u05b9\u05d1\u05b5\u05e8 \u05dc\u05b0\u05e4\u05b8\u05e0\u05b6\u05d9\u05da\u05b8 and this is what the Lord had already done according to Shemot \/ Exodus 13:21<\/a>. The statement \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d4\u05b9\u05dc\u05b5\u05da\u05b0 \u05dc\u05b4\u05e4\u05b0\u05e0\u05b5\u05d9\u05d4\u05b6\u05dd implies that God went before Israel, and Israel did not do anything, the Lord God did this for them. Same situation in regards to the splitting of the Red Sea, (Shemot \/ Exodus 14<\/a>) and also remember the snakes in the wilderness and having faith, believing they were healed. (Bamidbar \/ Numbers 21<\/a>) This is the love of God to take care of His people. One of the greatest promises is what we read when Moshe writes \u05dc\u05b9\u05d0 \u05d9\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05e4\u05bc\u05b0\u05da\u05b8 \u05d5\u05b0\u05dc\u05b9\u05d0 \u05d9\u05b7\u05e2\u05b7\u05d6\u05b0\u05d1\u05b6\u05da\u05bc\u05b8 \u201che will not fail or forsake you.\u201d<\/span><\/em> We note that Moshe states the same thing again in a slightly different way saying, Devarim \/ Deuteronomy 31:6<\/a>, \u05db\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9 | \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b6\u05d9\u05da\u05b8 \u05d4\u05d5\u05bc\u05d0 \u05d4\u05b7\u05d4\u05b9\u05dc\u05b5\u05da\u05b0 \u05e2\u05b4\u05de\u05bc\u05b8\u05da\u05b0 \u201cfor the Lord your God is the one who goes with you.\u201d<\/span><\/em> Notice something that is written in the Aramaic Targum by Yonathan ben Uzziel, \u05d0\u05d9\u05ea\u05d5\u05e7\u05e4\u05d5 \u05d5\u05d0\u05ea\u05d7\u05d9\u05d9\u05dc\u05d5 \u05dc\u05d0 \u05ea\u05d9\u05d3\u05d7\u05dc\u05d5\u05df \u05d5\u05dc\u05d0 \u05ea\u05ea\u05e8\u05e2\u05d5\u05df \u05de\u05df \u05e7\u05d3\u05de\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05df \u05d0\u05e8\u05d5\u05dd \u05d9\u05d9\u05d9 \u05d0\u05dc\u05e7\u05db\u05d5\u05df \u05e9\u05db\u05d9\u05e0\u05ea\u05d9\u05d4 \u05de\u05d9\u05d3\u05d1\u05e8\u05d0 \u05e7\u05d3\u05de\u05db\u05d5\u05df \u05dc\u05d0 \u05d9\u05e9\u05d1\u05e7\u05d9\u05e0\u05db\u05d5\u05df \u05d5\u05dc\u05d0 \u05d9\u05e8\u05d7\u05e7\u05d9\u05e0\u05db\u05d5\u05df here he says, \u05d0\u05e8\u05d5\u05dd \u05d9\u05d9\u05d9 \u05d0\u05dc\u05e7\u05db\u05d5\u05df \u05e9\u05db\u05d9\u05e0\u05ea\u05d9\u05d4 \u05de\u05d9\u05d3\u05d1\u05e8\u05d0 \u05e7\u05d3\u05de\u05db\u05d5\u05df \u201cbecause the Lord God Shekhina (divine presence) will go before you.\u201d<\/span><\/em> Here Yonathan translates that literally God\u2019s presence, His Spirit will go before the people and in their midst! When we consider all of these things, the messianic expectation, the power of God to go before the people to overcome these wicked nations, and all that God does for those who remain faithful to God\u2019s Word, these things speak of the gospel message that is taught according to the Apostolic Writings!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joshua is the one who will cross ahead of you, just as the Lord has spoken. 31:4 \u2018The Lord will do to them just as He did to Sihon and Og, the kings of the Amorites, and to their land, when He destroyed them. 31:5 \u2018The Lord will deliver them up before you, and you shall do to them according to all the commandments which I have commanded you. 31:6 \u2018Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble at them, for the Lord your God is the one who goes with you. He will not fail you or forsake you.\u2019 31:7 Then Moses called to Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, \u2018Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land which the Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall give it to them as an inheritance. 31:8 \u2018The Lord is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.\u2019 31:9 So Moses wrote this law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the elders of Israel. 31:10 Then Moses commanded them, saying, \u2018At the end of every seven years, at the time of the year of remission of debts, at the Feast of Booths, 31:11 when all Israel comes to appear before the Lord your God at the place which He will choose, you shall read this law in front of all Israel in their hearing. 31:12 \u2018Assemble the people, the men and the women and children and the alien who is in your town, so that they may hear and learn and fear the Lord your God, and be careful to observe all the words of this law. 31:13 \u2018Their children, who have not known, will hear and learn to fear the Lord your God, as long as you live on the land which you are about to cross the Jordan to possess.\u2019 (NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The fact that the rabbis connect these words to a messianic expectation in the idea that God would go with and before the people these things coupled together are quite significant! Remember Moshe said the following, \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b6\u05d9\u05da\u05b8 \u05d4\u05d5\u05bc\u05d0 | \u05e2\u05b9\u05d1\u05b5\u05e8 \u05dc\u05b0\u05e4\u05b8\u05e0\u05b6\u05d9\u05da\u05b8 \u05d4\u05d5\u05bc\u05d0-\u05d9\u05b7\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05d3 \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05d4\u05b7\u05d2\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05d9\u05b4\u05dd \u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b5\u05dc\u05bc\u05b6\u05d4 \u05de\u05b4\u05dc\u05bc\u05b0\u05e4\u05b8\u05e0\u05b6\u05d9\u05da\u05b8 \u05d5\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b4\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05ea\u05bc\u05b8\u05dd \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05d5\u05b9\u05e9\u05c1\u05bb\u05e2\u05b7 \u05d4\u05d5\u05bc\u05d0 \u05e2\u05b9\u05d1\u05b5\u05e8 \u05dc\u05b0\u05e4\u05b8\u05e0\u05b6\u05d9\u05da\u05b8 \u05db\u05bc\u05b7\u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05e8 \u05d3\u05bc\u05b4\u05d1\u05bc\u05b6\u05e8 \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05d5\u05b9\u05b8\u05d4 \u201cIt is the Lord your God who will cross ahead of you; He will destroy these nations before you, and you shall dispossess them. Joshua is the one who will cross ahead of you, just as the Lord has spoken.\u201d<\/span><\/em> In order to understand why these things are so significant, we have to revisit the story of Moshe when he was chosen and called to be God\u2019s emissary. We read this according to Shemot \/ Exodus 3<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/strong>10 \u201cTherefore, come now, and I will send you to Pharaoh, so that you may bring My people, the sons of Israel, out of Egypt.\u201d 11 But Moses said to God, \u201cWho am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the sons of Israel out of Egypt?\u201d 12 And He said, \u201cCertainly I will be with you, and this shall be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God at this mountain.\u201d 13 Then Moses said to God, \u201cBehold, I am going to the sons of Israel, and I will say to them, \u2018The God of your fathers has sent me to you.\u2019 Now they may say to me, \u2018What is His name?\u2019 What shall I say to them?\u201d 14 God said to Moses, \u201cI AM WHO I AM\u201d; and He said, \u201cThus you shall say to the sons of Israel, \u2018I AM has sent me to you.\u2019 \u201d 15 God, furthermore, said to Moses, \u201cThus you shall say to the sons of Israel, \u2018The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.\u2019 This is My name forever, and this is My memorial-name to all generations. 16 \u201cGo and gather the elders of Israel (NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Note just prior to this Moshe was tending the sheep of Jethro and he saw the burning bush that would not be consumed by the flames. Here at the burning bush the Lord God of Israel is calling Moshe. Something to note is the Lord did not appeal to Moshe\u2019s past experiences or to his humility before God. Instead the Lord assures him saying \u05db\u05bc\u05b4\u05bd\u05d9\u05be\u05d0\u05b6\u05bd\u05d4\u05b0\u05d9\u05b6\u05a3\u05d4 \u05e2\u05b4\u05de\u05bc\u05b8\u0594\u05da\u05b0 \u201cfor I will be with you.\u201d<\/span><\/em> What the Lord is revealing to Moshe is that it doesn\u2019t matter what inadequacies one may have, having His presence, being in a relationship with God, is what is most important. The sufficiency of God for the task at hand is found in His presence! Note how this fits very nicely with the role of the Messiah of God as bringing with Him the divine presence of God! Note also how this is why the rabbis connect these statements to the future expectation of the Messiah. In addition to this, look at what we see going on with Joshua, what Moshe says. Moshe is talking about God, basically God is speaking through Moshe telling him that He will be with him! This is consistent with the messianic expectation and the presence of God amongst His people!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consider how powerful this is! When we follow the Messiah, we walk in the presence of God. This is how Joshua led the people into the Promised Land. This provides us with the expectation of what God is going to do in our lives as well, when we trust in Him and walk in His ways of truth and righteousness. Yeshua spoke of this very thing when he said what he did according to John 14<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own, but the Father, as He remains in Me, does His works. 11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; otherwise believe because of the works themselves. 12 Truly, truly I say to you, the one who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I am going to the Father. 13 And whatever you ask in My name, this I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it. 15 \u201cIf you love Me, you will keep My commandments. 16 I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, so that He may be with you forever; 17 the Helper is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him; but you know Him because He remains with you and will be in you. Here Yeshua makes the statements that he is one with the Father, ie he is in the Father and the Father is in Him. These statements about Yeshua and the Father reveal how the Commandments in the Torah are the Fathers; they are also His (Yeshua) too. Yeshua proceeds to say \u05f4\u05d0\u05b4\u05dd \u05d0\u05b7\u05ea\u05b6\u05bc\u05dd “\u05d0\u05d5\u05b9\u05d4\u05b2\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05d0\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea\u05b4\u05d9, \u05d4\u05b2\u05e8\u05b5\u05d9 \u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05ea\u05b4\u05bc\u05e9\u05b0\u05c1\u05de\u05b0\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea \u05de\u05b4\u05e6\u05b0\u05d5\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea\u05b7\u05d9. \u201cIf you love Me, you will keep My commandments.\u201d<\/span><\/em> This is a very Jewish way of speaking as this is the language of the Torah. This very thing is repeated in the Epistle of John saying in 1 John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments (NASB)<\/span><\/em> When we believe, Yeshua asks the Father to send His Spirit, His presence into our lives, exactly like what we are reading here in this week\u2019s Torah Portion. It is the Messiah of God who facilitates these things, as the presence of God, His \u05e9\u05db\u05d9\u05e0\u05ea\u05d4 (Shekhina) is in our midst because of our faith in God and in His Messiah!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
