The Scriptures we are looking at for this week are from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Deuteronomy.27?lang=bi&amp;aliyot=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Devarim \/ Deuteronomy 27<\/a>. This day you have become a people for the Lord your God. 27:10 \u2018You shall therefore obey the Lord your God, and do His commandments and His statutes which I command you today.\u2019 (NASB)<\/span><\/em> Moshe says \u05d4\u05b7\u05e1\u05b0\u05db\u05bc\u05b5\u05ea | \u05d5\u05bc\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05de\u05b7\u05e2 \u05d9\u05b4\u05e9\u05b0\u05b9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0\u05b5\u05dc <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cbe silent and listen Israel\u201d<\/span><\/em> to get their attention, and then said \u05d4\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05dd \u05d4\u05b7\u05d6\u05bc\u05b6\u05d4 \u05e0\u05b4\u05d4\u05b0\u05d9\u05b5\u05d9\u05ea\u05b8 \u05dc\u05b0\u05e2\u05b8\u05dd \u05dc\u05b7\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05b9\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b6\u05d9\u05da\u05b8 <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cthis day you have become the people of the Lord you God.\u201d<\/span><\/em> This is an interesting statement. What has changed that caused Moshe to declare this to the people? Why would Moshe say only now you have become the people of God? Was it due to their going to cross over into the Promised Land? Do the people only become the people of God when living in the Land? Rashi explains the word \u05e0\u05b4\u05d4\u05b0\u05d9\u05b5\u05d9\u05ea\u05b8 <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cyou have become\u201d<\/span><\/em> to say that Moshe was referring to a previous covenant. It was the acceptance of the \u05d7\u05d5\u05e7\u05d9\u05dd (Laws) of the Torah with a solemn oath that caused them to become a nation. The reason this is written in this way was because on that day they accepted upon themselves the blessings and curses that would be said at Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal. It is because they have become a nation of people, Moshe describes them as being a faithful people saying, \u05d5\u05b0\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05de\u05b7\u05e2\u05b0\u05ea\u05bc\u05b8 \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05e7\u05d5\u05b9\u05dc \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05d5\u05b9\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b6\u05d9\u05da\u05b8 \u05d5\u05b0\u05e2\u05b8\u05e9\u05b4\u05b9\u05d9\u05ea\u05b8 \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05de\u05b4\u05e6\u05b0\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea\u05b8\u05d5 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05d7\u05bb\u05e7\u05bc\u05b8\u05d9\u05d5 \u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05e8 \u05d0\u05b8\u05e0\u05b9\u05db\u05b4\u05d9 \u05de\u05b0\u05e6\u05b7\u05d5\u05bc\u05b0\u05da\u05b8 \u05d4\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05dd <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cYou therefore are to obey \/ listen to the Lord your God, and do His commandments and His statutes which I command you today.\u201d<\/span><\/em> It is very important to note the points of order in what Moshe is saying here. The people become a nation under God as His people by their faith and their solemn oath. Once the people have become God\u2019s people, they are then expected to live faithfully before Him. What we note is that the commands (\u05de\u05b4\u05e6\u05b0\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea\u05b8\u05d5) and statutes \/ laws (\u05d7\u05bb\u05e7\u05bc\u05b8\u05d9\u05d5) were give for a faithful people. These were not given so they could earn their way into the family of God or as a people of God. Over and over again the Torah revealed this to us concerning the purpose of the commands. These were given to one who is already a child of a God by faith. This is how and why Paul argued so vehemently concerning faith and works, that one should trust in God and not in his own works (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romans+2%2C+Romans+10&amp;version=NASB,sblgnt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Romans 2 and 10<\/a>). Similarly we read what it is God expects from His people simply by the way in which the Lord instructs His people to stand on Mount Ebal and pronounce the curses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Scriptures we are looking at for this week\u2019s Torah Portion are from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Deuteronomy.27.9-26?lang=bi&amp;aliyot=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Devarim \/ Deuteronomy It is interesting how Moshe speaks of the intimate nature of idolatry, speaking of the one who \u05d5\u05b0\u05e9\u05b8\u05b9\u05dd \u05d1\u05bc\u05b7\u05e1\u05bc\u05b8\u05ea\u05b6\u05e8 <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201csets it up in secret.\u201d<\/span><\/em> The point is idolatry comes in many forms, even in the most secret place, the heart, and God sees this, it is not possible to hide one\u2019s idolatry from the Lord!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-right is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u05d8\u05d6 \u05d0\u05b8\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05e8 \u05de\u05b7\u05e7\u05b0\u05dc\u05b6\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b8\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05d5 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b4\u05de\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b8\u05de\u05b7\u05e8 \u05db\u05bc\u05b8\u05dc-\u05d4\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05dd \u05d0\u05b8\u05de\u05b5\u05df: \u05e1<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The second curse is concerning dishonoring (\u05de\u05b7\u05e7\u05b0\u05dc\u05b6\u05d4) father and mother. This word \u05de\u05b7\u05e7\u05b0\u05dc\u05b6\u05d4 means <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cto become contemptible.\u201d<\/span><\/em> This is interesting as holding contempt for someone occurs within someone, in the heart. Dishonoring begins in the heart which is then lived out in action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-right is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u05d9\u05d6 \u05d0\u05b8\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05e8 \u05de\u05b7\u05e1\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05d2 \u05d2\u05bc\u05b0\u05d1\u05d5\u05bc\u05dc \u05e8\u05b5\u05e2\u05b5\u05d4\u05d5\u05bc \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b8\u05de\u05b7\u05e8 \u05db\u05bc\u05b8\u05dc-\u05d4\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05dd \u05d0\u05b8\u05de\u05b5\u05df: \u05e1<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The third curse is related to \u05de\u05b7\u05e1\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05d2 \u05d2\u05bc\u05b0\u05d1\u05d5\u05bc\u05dc \u05e8\u05b5\u05e2\u05b5\u05d4\u05d5\u05bc <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cremoving boundary stone of neighbor.\u201d<\/span><\/em> The root word \u05de\u05b7\u05e1\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05d2 means <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cdivert, be disloyal, to turn away.\u201d<\/span><\/em> Here it is translated in the NASB as <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cremove.\u201d<\/span><\/em> The idea of moving a landmark is like moving a property line in order to steal property from a neighbor. The rabbis connect this to something that is done at night time. This parallels one leading a blind person astray. (<em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">Chizkuni on Devarim \/ Deuteronomy 27:17 Part 1<\/span><\/em>) Rashi states that the word \u05de\u05e1\u05d9\u05d2 has the same meaning as the verb in (Isaiah 59:14) <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cand he is turned backwards (\u05d4\u05bb\ufb41\u05b7\u05d2).\u201d<\/span><\/em> (<span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\"><em>Rashi on Devarim \/ Deuteronomy 27:17 Part 1<\/em><\/span>) We note how the land is given by God, and the one who violates this command is turning back a command. Could this parallel the idea of turning one from the command as causing a curse to fall upon one\u2019s self?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-right is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u05d9\u05d7 \u05d0\u05b8\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05e8 \u05de\u05b7\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05d2\u05bc\u05b6\u05d4 \u05e2\u05b4\u05d5\u05bc\u05b5\u05e8 \u05d1\u05bc\u05b7\u05d3\u05bc\u05b8\u05e8\u05b6\u05da\u05b0 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b8\u05de\u05b7\u05e8 \u05db\u05bc\u05b8\u05dc-\u05d4\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05dd \u05d0\u05b8\u05de\u05b5\u05df: \u05e1<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The fourth curse draws in the idea of leading the blind in the wrong direction. The toot word for \u05de\u05b7\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05d2\u05bc\u05b6\u05d4 means <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cstray, stagger, do wrong, lead astray, mislead,\u201d<\/span><\/em> and is written in the Hifil verbal form. The Hiphil stem is generally used to express causative action in an active voice. Here the one who violates this command is taking action to harm the blind as opposed to having compassion and mercy to do what is right on the person\u2019s behalf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-right is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u05d9\u05d8 \u05d0\u05b8\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05e8 \u05de\u05b7\u05d8\u05bc\u05b6\u05d4 \u05de\u05b4\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05e4\u05bc\u05b7\u05d8 \u05d2\u05bc\u05b5\u05e8-\u05d9\u05b8\u05ea\u05d5\u05b9\u05dd \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b7\u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05b8\u05e0\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b8\u05de\u05b7\u05e8 \u05db\u05bc\u05b8\u05dc-\u05d4\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05dd \u05d0\u05b8\u05de\u05b5\u05df:<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The fifth curse is related to \u05de\u05b7\u05d8\u05bc\u05b6\u05d4 \u05de\u05b4\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05e4\u05bc\u05b7\u05d8 <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cto divert \/ distort justice.\u201d<\/span><\/em> This verse speaks of the one who subverts the rights of another human being. The rabbis parallel this to the one who has carnal relations with their closest relatives and domestic animals. (<em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">Chizkuni on Devarim \/ Deuteronomy 27:19 Part 1<\/span><\/em>) Note that this also is something that is done \u05d1\u05bc\u05b7\u05e1\u05bc\u05b8\u05ea\u05b6\u05e8 <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cin secret.\u201d<\/span><\/em> Only two sins are listed as being committed openly which are idolatry and violent behavior against one\u2019s neighbor. Note <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Deuteronomy.27.18?lang=bi&amp;aliyot=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Devarim \/ Deuteronomy 27:18<\/a><\/em> states that idolatry that is set up in secret is an abomination. Idolatry will eventually become discovered, just like the one who is violent with his neighbor. The Torah adds the words \u05d5\u05b0\u05e9\u05b8\u05b9\u05dd \u05d1\u05bc\u05b7\u05e1\u05bc\u05b8\u05ea\u05b6\u05e8 <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cand sets it up in secret\u201d<\/span><\/em> as there are courts which are able to take action against such perpetrators. These Scriptures mention the \u05d2\u05bc\u05b5\u05e8 (stranger), the \u05d9\u05b8\u05ea\u05d5\u05b9\u05dd (orphan), and the \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b7\u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05b8\u05e0\u05b8\u05d4 (widow) because these are those who are most likely not to receive justice. These are who are powerless if injustice comes, and so the idea is one must exercise mercy and compassion towards those who are less fortunate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote \u05e9\u05c1\u05b9\u05db\u05b5\u05d1 \u05e2\u05b4\u05dd-\u05d7\u05b9\u05ea\u05b7\u05e0\u05b0\u05ea\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9 <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cCursed is he who lies with his mother-in-law.\u201d<\/span><\/em> These commands are obvious, the one who sins sexually in these ways receives a curse on their lives from God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-right is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u05e1 \u05db\u05d3 \u05d0\u05b8\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05e8 \u05de\u05b7\u05db\u05bc\u05b5\u05d4 \u05e8\u05b5\u05e2\u05b5\u05d4\u05d5\u05bc \u05d1\u05bc\u05b7\u05e1\u05bc\u05b8\u05ea\u05b6\u05e8 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b8\u05de\u05b7\u05e8 \u05db\u05bc\u05b8\u05dc-\u05d4\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05dd \u05d0\u05b8\u05de\u05b5\u05df: \u05e1<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Here we see the command against \u05de\u05b7\u05db\u05bc\u05b5\u05d4 \u05e8\u05b5\u05e2\u05b5\u05d4\u05d5\u05bc \u05d1\u05bc\u05b7\u05e1\u05bc\u05b8\u05ea\u05b6\u05e8 <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cstriking your neighbor in secret.\u201d<\/span><\/em> The question is why add the word \u05d1\u05bc\u05b7\u05e1\u05bc\u05b8\u05ea\u05b6\u05e8 <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cin secret?\u201d<\/span><\/em> The idea is if one would hit someone in public would it be permitted?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-right is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u05db\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b8\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05e8 \u05dc\u05b9\u05e7\u05b5\u05d7\u05b7 \u05e9\u05c1\u05b9\u05d7\u05b7\u05d3 \u05dc\u05b0\u05d4\u05b7\u05db\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05e0\u05b6\u05e4\u05b6\u05e9\u05c1 \u05d3\u05bc\u05b8\u05dd \u05e0\u05b8\u05e7\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b8\u05de\u05b7\u05e8 \u05db\u05bc\u05b8\u05dc-\u05d4\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05dd \u05d0\u05b8\u05de\u05b5\u05df: \u05e1<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Here we find the curse for \u05dc\u05b9\u05e7\u05b5\u05d7\u05b7 \u05e9\u05c1\u05b9\u05d7\u05b7\u05d3 \u05dc\u05b0\u05d4\u05b7\u05db\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05e0\u05b6\u05e4\u05b6\u05e9\u05c1 \u05d3\u05bc\u05b8\u05dd \u05e0\u05b8\u05e7\u05b4\u05d9 <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201ctaking a bribe to strike the life\/soul blood of the innocent.\u201d<\/span><\/em> The idea of taking a bribe (\u05dc\u05b9\u05e7\u05b5\u05d7\u05b7 \u05e9\u05c1\u05b9\u05d7\u05b7\u05d3) is related to making a false witness (<em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">Ibn Ezra on Devarim \/ Deuteronomy 27:25 Part 1<\/span><\/em>) This is related to perverting justice and the example is given of causing the one who is innocent to be condemned to death by the perjured testimony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-right is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u05db\u05d5 \u05d0\u05b8\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05e8 \u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05e8 \u05dc\u05b9\u05d0-\u05d9\u05b8\u05e7\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05d3\u05bc\u05b4\u05d1\u05b0\u05e8\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d4\u05b7\u05ea\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4-\u05d4\u05b7\u05d6\u05bc\u05b9\u05d0\u05ea \u05dc\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05e9\u05b9\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05d0\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea\u05b8\u05dd \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b8\u05de\u05b7\u05e8 \u05db\u05bc\u05b8\u05dc-\u05d4\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05dd \u05d0\u05b8\u05de\u05b5\u05df:<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The last curse in the list of curses states \u05d0\u05b8\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05e8 \u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05e8 \u05dc\u05b9\u05d0-\u05d9\u05b8\u05e7\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05d3\u05bc\u05b4\u05d1\u05b0\u05e8\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d4\u05b7\u05ea\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4-\u05d4\u05b7\u05d6\u05bc\u05b9\u05d0\u05ea \u05dc\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05e9\u05b9\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05d0\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea\u05b8\u05dd <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cCursed is he who does not confirm the words of this Torah (law) by doing them.\u201d<\/span><\/em> We note that there are eleven sins that are listed here in the list of curses. This list is not all inclusive. There are a large number of commandments that were not included. This last curse in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Deuteronomy.27.26?lang=bi&amp;aliyot=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Devarim \/ Deuteronomy 27:26<\/a> however is the all inclusive verse stating \u05d3\u05bc\u05b4\u05d1\u05b0\u05e8\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d4\u05b7\u05ea\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4-\u05d4\u05b7\u05d6\u05bc\u05b9\u05d0\u05ea <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cthe words of this Torah.\u201d<\/span><\/em> Note there are twelve curses which include this last one which may correspond to the twelve tribes of Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"578\" src=\"https:\/\/www.matsati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/sllide-2-kitavo-1024x578.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13017\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.matsati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/sllide-2-kitavo-1024x578.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.matsati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/sllide-2-kitavo-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.matsati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/sllide-2-kitavo-200x113.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.matsati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/sllide-2-kitavo-1536x867.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.matsati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/sllide-2-kitavo-2048x1156.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.matsati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/sllide-2-kitavo-696x393.jpg 696w, https:\/\/www.matsati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/sllide-2-kitavo-1068x603.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/www.matsati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/sllide-2-kitavo-744x420.jpg 744w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If we consider what is being said in the list of curses, it is easy to understand the moral intent of the Torah. We note how the nations involved themselves in these ways of immorality and idolatry. The real question for us, if we were to limit ourselves to simply the moral aspects of the commands, we quickly realize our need for mercy from God. On the day of our death, will we trust in our own adherence to the moral commands as our appeal before a perfectly holy and absolutely righteous God? This is a pretty good question right? The point is we need God\u2019s help, His presence in our lives to keep us from sin. In Parashat Beshalach, we read the following according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Exodus.15.26?lang=bi&amp;aliyot=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shemot \/ Exodus 15:26<\/a> \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b9\u05d0\u05de\u05b6\u05e8\u05a9 \u05d0\u05b4\u05dd\u05be\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05de\u05a8\u05d5\u05b9\u05e2\u05b7 \u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05de\u05b7\u059c\u05e2 \u05dc\u05b0\u05e7\u05a3\u05d5\u05b9\u05dc\u05c0 \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05d5\u05b8\u05a3\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b6\u0597\u05d9\u05da\u05b8 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d4\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b8\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05a4\u05e8 \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05e2\u05b5\u05d9\u05e0\u05b8\u05d9\u05d5\u0599 \u05ea\u05bc\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05e9\u05c2\u05b6\u0594\u05d4 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d4\u05b7\u05bd\u05d0\u05b2\u05d6\u05b7\u05e0\u05b0\u05ea\u05bc\u05b8\u0599 \u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05b4\u05e6\u05b0\u05d5\u05ba\u05ea\u05b8\u0594\u05d9\u05d5 \u05d5\u05b0\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05de\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05ea\u05bc\u05b8\u0596 \u05db\u05bc\u05b8\u05dc\u05be\u05d7\u05bb\u05e7\u05bc\u05b8\u0591\u05d9\u05d5 \u05db\u05bc\u05b8\u05bd\u05dc\u05be\u05d4\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05b7\u05bd\u05d7\u05b2\u05dc\u05b8\u059e\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05e8\u05be\u05e9\u05c2\u05b7\u05a4\u05de\u05b0\u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d1\u05b0\u05de\u05b4\u05e6\u05b0\u05e8\u05b7\u0599\u05d9\u05b4\u05dd\u0599 \u05dc\u05b9\u05d0\u05be\u05d0\u05b8\u05e9\u05c2\u05b4\u05a3\u05d9\u05dd \u05e2\u05b8\u05dc\u05b6\u0594\u05d9\u05da\u05b8 \u05db\u05bc\u05b4\u059b\u05d9 \u05d0\u05b2\u05e0\u05b4\u05a5\u05d9 \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05d5\u05b8\u0596\u05d4 \u05e8\u05b9\u05e4\u05b0\u05d0\u05b6\u05bd\u05da\u05b8\u05c3 <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cIf you will diligently listen to the voice of the LORD your God, and do that which is right in his eyes, and give ear to his commandments and keep all his decrees, I will put none of the diseases on you that I put on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, your healer.\u201d<\/span><\/em> There are several significant points that are being made according to this verse. Moshe begins saying \u05d0\u05b4\u05dd\u05be\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05de\u05a8\u05d5\u05b9\u05e2\u05b7 \u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05de\u05b7\u059c\u05e2 <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cif you diligently listen.\u201d<\/span><\/em> The first part is to be careful to listen meaning we are to pay close attention \u05dc\u05b0\u05e7\u05a3\u05d5\u05b9\u05dc\u05c0 \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05d5\u05b8\u05a3\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b6\u0597\u05d9\u05da\u05b8 <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cto the voice of the Lord your God.\u201d<\/span><\/em> This reminds us of God speaking to Moshe from the midst of the burning bush, or of God speaking to all of Israel at Sinai. In order to hear God\u2019s voice the first thing we must do is humble ourselves before God to listen to what He is saying. The very next thing is \u05d5\u05b0\u05d4\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b8\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05a4\u05e8 \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05e2\u05b5\u05d9\u05e0\u05b8\u05d9\u05d5\u0599 \u05ea\u05bc\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05e9\u05c2\u05b6\u0594\u05d4 <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cdo what is right in His eyes.\u201d<\/span><\/em> We note how the word \u05d5\u05b0\u05d4\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b8\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05a4\u05e8 means <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cstraight, right, correct.\u201d<\/span><\/em> This is how it is said that one is to walk uprightly (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Psalms.25.8?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tehillim \/ Psalms 25:8<\/a>), which are to do acts of charity and justice \u05dc\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05e9\u05c2\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05e6\u05b0\u05d3\u05b8\u05e7\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d5\u05bc\u05de\u05b4\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05e4\u05bc\u05b8\u05d8 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Genesis.18.19?lang=bi&amp;aliyot=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bereshit \/ Genesis 18:19<\/a>). This is the narrow path that Yeshua spoke about according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+7%3A14&amp;version=NASB;SBLGNT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matthew 7:14<\/a>. Those who are upright, who walk the narrow path, who do what is right in the eyes of the Lord, are known by the good fruit they produce in their lives. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+7%3A15-23&amp;version=NASB;SBLGNT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matthew 7:15-23<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The verse goes on saying, \u05d5\u05b0\u05d4\u05b7\u05bd\u05d0\u05b2\u05d6\u05b7\u05e0\u05b0\u05ea\u05bc\u05b8\u0599 \u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05b4\u05e6\u05b0\u05d5\u05ba\u05ea\u05b8\u0594\u05d9\u05d5 <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cand you are to give ear to His commands\u201d<\/span><\/em> meaning that one is actively listening, actually participating in hearing by paying attention. The reason the giving ear is so important is in what God is revealing to us in His Words, the revealed will of God. We cannot \u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05de\u05a8\u05d5\u05b9\u05e2\u05b7 \u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05de\u05b7\u059c\u05e2 <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cdiligently listen\u201d<\/span><\/em> to the voice of the Lord and thoroughly hear what is being said if we do not live our lives according to His Word! As James wrote saying, \u05d4\u05b1\u05d9\u05d5\u05bc \u05e2\u05d5\u05b9\u05e9\u05b5\u05c2\u05d9 \u05d4\u05b7\u05d3\u05b8\u05bc\u05d1\u05b8\u05e8 \u05d5\u05b0\u05dc\u05b9\u05d0 \u05e8\u05b7\u05e7 \u05e9\u05c1\u05d5\u05b9\u05de\u05b0\u05e2\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd, \u05e4\u05b6\u05bc\u05df \u05ea\u05b0\u05bc\u05e8\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea \u05e2\u05b7\u05e6\u05b0\u05de\u05b0\u05db\u05b6\u05dd <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cbe doers of the word and not only listeners, lest you deceive yourself.\u201d<\/span><\/em> The idea is one does not simply hear the word and nothing else. We don\u2019t merely hear the truth of the Word of God, we are to also live it! Keeping God\u2019s decrees (\u05d5\u05b0\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05de\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05ea\u05bc\u05b8\u0596 \u05db\u05bc\u05b8\u05dc\u05be\u05d7\u05bb\u05e7\u05bc\u05b8\u0591\u05d9\u05d5) uses the word khok (\u05d7\u05e7) for laws. This phrase suggests how we are to guard (shamar, \u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05de\u05b7\u05e8) the decrees of God as something valuable, to keep in the heart with all vigilance. (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Proverbs.4.24?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mishley \/ Proverbs 4:24<\/a>) This verse in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Exodus.15.26?lang=bi&amp;aliyot=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shemot \/ Exodus 15:26<\/a> concludes saying, \u05db\u05bc\u05b8\u05bd\u05dc\u05be\u05d4\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05b7\u05bd\u05d7\u05b2\u05dc\u05b8\u059e\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05e8\u05be\u05e9\u05c2\u05b7\u05a4\u05de\u05b0\u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d1\u05b0\u05de\u05b4\u05e6\u05b0\u05e8\u05b7\u0599\u05d9\u05b4\u05dd\u0599 \u05dc\u05b9\u05d0\u05be\u05d0\u05b8\u05e9\u05c2\u05b4\u05a3\u05d9\u05dd \u05e2\u05b8\u05dc\u05b6\u0594\u05d9\u05da\u05b8 \u05db\u05bc\u05b4\u059b\u05d9 \u05d0\u05b2\u05e0\u05b4\u05a5\u05d9 \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05d5\u05b8\u0596\u05d4 \u05e8\u05b9\u05e4\u05b0\u05d0\u05b6\u05bd\u05da\u05b8 <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201call the diseases \/ illnesses that I placed on the Egyptians, I will not place upon you, because I am the God who heals you.\u201d<\/span><\/em> This describes our finding of healing in the Lord God Almighty, and concludes by honoring God and His Words as leading to our protection and to a personal healing. This comes when we heed the truth of God in our lives! Notice how this verse speaks of acts of obedience (deeds) more than simply reciting a creed. Note the curses listed in this week\u2019s Torah portion are also involving acts of obedience (deeds), cursed is the one who makes an idol, who dishonors his mother and father, who moves a boundary stone, who commits all sorts of sexual immoralities (sexual sins) and who takes bribes and strikes a neighbor. The emphasis again here is to how we are to live our lives based upon our having faith in the one true God and in Yeshua. Yeshua said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+13%3A17&amp;version=NASB;SBLGNT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 13:17<\/a>, <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cIf you know these things, happy are you if you do them,\u201d<\/span><\/em> therefore we are to be joyful in our obedience to God. Also note that Yeshua warned us saying, <em><span style=\"color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cNot everyone who says to me, \u2018Lord, Lord,\u2019 will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, \u2018Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?\u2019 And then will I declare to them, \u2018I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.\u201d<\/span><\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+7%3A21-23&amp;version=NASB;SBLGNT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matthew 7:21-23<\/a>) Obeying God\u2019s word by living it out should be a joy to us!
