This week\u2019s Torah Portion is for Pesach, we will look at the Haftarah portion from Ezekiel 37:1-14<\/a>. These scriptures from Ezekiel are especially important as describing the eventual return of the Judeans to their Land, we see a picture of resurrection that becomes the cornerstone of the Jewish belief in the resurrection from the dead. One of the most striking aspects of these Scriptures is related to the belief that God is able to raise someone from the dead. Here we are told of an entire nation being raised from the dead and not just a single person. This vision that God gave to Ezekiel, is concerning the eventual restoration of Israel who at this point in time, in Babylon is as dead, paralleled to the valley of dry bones. These Scriptures reveal to us how the Lord God Almighty is the giver of life, and this vision begins with the Lord God setting Ezekiel down in a valley full of bones. He took me out by the spirit of the LORD and set me down in the valley. It was full of bones. (Sefaria)<\/em><\/span> What does Ezekiel mean when he says \u201cthe hand of the Lord was upon me\u201d<\/span><\/em> (\u05d4\u05b8\u05d9\u05b0\u05ea\u05b8\u05a3\u05d4 \u05e2\u05b8\u05dc\u05b7\u05d9\u05ae \u05d9\u05b7\u05d3\u05be\u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05d5\u05b8\u05d4\u0592)? How does the hand of the Lord come upon a person? Some might say that we always have the Holy Spirit of God within us, how can the spirit come upon us? I believe this is due to a rather narrow view \/ understanding of the role of the Spirit of God. There are a few places in the Scriptures that provide some insights, such as in 1 Samuel 10:6<\/a> Then the Spirit of the LORD will rush upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be changed into a different man. (NASB)<\/em><\/span> This suggests that the Spirit of God can move upon a person in power as Samuel was telling Saul. Obviously as we read here in Ezekiel, as the text continues, we see how the Lord moves powerfully in Ezekiel to prophecy over the valley of bones and they come to life. Ezekiel 37:1<\/a> continues saying \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05e6\u05b4\u05d0\u05b5\u05a4\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d1\u05b0\u05e8\u0599\u05d5\u05bc\u05d7\u05b7\u0599 \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05d5\u05b8\u0594\u05d4 \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b0\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9\u05d7\u05b5\u0596\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05ea\u05a3\u05d5\u05b9\u05da\u05b0 \u05d4\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b4\u05e7\u05b0\u05e2\u05b8\u0591\u05d4 where the Scriptures use the verb \u05e0\u05d5\u05bc\u05d7\u05b7 written in the Hif\u02bf\u00eel waw-consecutive imperfect, third person masculine singular form, meaning \u201cSettle down\u201d<\/em><\/span> or \u201crest\u201d<\/span><\/em> does this mean that Ezekiel was literally caught up in the air and brought to this valley, or did it mean he was led by the Spirit of God to this location? Thinking on this question, there are a few other places in the Scriptures that describe similar events, such as in Acts 8:39<\/a>, \u05db\u05b0\u05bc\u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05e2\u05b8\u05dc\u05d5\u05bc \u05de\u05b4\u05ea\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05da\u05b0 \u05d4\u05b7\u05de\u05b7\u05bc\u05d9\u05b4\u05dd \u05d7\u05b8\u05d8\u05b0\u05e4\u05b8\u05d4 \u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05d7\u05b7 \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea \u05e4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e4\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05e1, \u05d5\u05b0\u05d4\u05b7\u05e1\u05b8\u05bc\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05e1 \u05dc\u05b9\u05d0 \u05e8\u05b8\u05d0\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d0\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea\u05d5\u05b9 \u05e2\u05d5\u05b9\u05d3. \u05d0\u05b8\u05d6 \u05e0\u05b8\u05e1\u05b7\u05e2 \u05dc\u05b0\u05d3\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05db\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9 \u05e9\u05b8\u05c2\u05de\u05b5\u05d7\u05b7. 8:39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; and the eunuch no longer saw him, but went on his way rejoicing. (NASB)<\/em><\/span> Here we are told the spirit snatched (\u05d7\u05b8\u05d8\u05b0\u05e4\u05b8\u05d4) Philipos (\u05e4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e4\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05e1) away and the \u05d4\u05b7\u05e1\u05b8\u05bc\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05e1 (eunuch) did not see him. In this instance, the spirit of God caught him up and took him away. Paul also wrote according to 2 Corinthians 12:2<\/a> the following, \u05d0\u05b2\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9 \u05de\u05b7\u05db\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9\u05e8 \u05d0\u05b4\u05d9\u05e9\u05c1 \u05d1\u05b7\u05bc\u05de\u05b8\u05bc\u05e9\u05b4\u05c1\u05d9\u05d7\u05b7, \u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05e8 \u05dc\u05b4\u05e4\u05b0\u05e0\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d0\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05d1\u05b7\u05bc\u05e2\u2013\u05e2\u05b6\u05e9\u05b0\u05c2\u05e8\u05b5\u05d4 \u05e9\u05b8\u05c1\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05e0\u05b4\u05dc\u05b0\u05e7\u05b7\u05d7 \u05d0\u05b6\u05dc \u05d4\u05b8\u05e8\u05b8\u05e7\u05b4\u05d9\u05e2\u05b7 \u05d4\u05b7\u05e9\u05b0\u05bc\u05c1\u05dc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e9\u05b4\u05c1\u05d9; \u05d0\u05b5\u05d9\u05e0\u05b6\u05e0\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9 \u05d9\u05d5\u05b9\u05d3\u05b5\u05e2\u05b7 \u05d0\u05b4\u05dd \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05d2\u05d5\u05bc\u05e4\u05d5\u05b9 \u05d0\u05d5\u05b9 \u05de\u05b4\u05d7\u05d5\u05bc\u05e5 \u05dc\u05b0\u05d2\u05d5\u05bc\u05e4\u05d5\u05b9, \u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05d9\u05d5\u05b9\u05d3\u05b5\u05e2\u05b7 12:2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago\u2014whether in the body I do not know, or out of the body I do not know, God knows\u2014such a man was caught up to the third heaven. (NASB)<\/span><\/em> Here in John\u2019s vision, the Lord brought him to this place that showed him the great prostitute and the beast that was full of blasphemous names. The mode of transport in a vision may have had John simply being shown these things in the spirit, was this how Ezekiel was being shown these things? It is likely that Ezekiel was being shown a vision as opposed to actually being in a valley with bones as he prophesied over the bones as the Lord had commanded him to do. The Rashi describes this verse from Ezekiel in the following way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rashi on Ezekiel 37:1 Part 1
<\/strong>The hand of the Lord came upon me and carried me out in the spirit of the Lord, etc. Every \u201cthe hand of the Lord\u201d in a prophecy is an expression of compulsion, meaning that the spirit would compel him to go as a madman to a place that the spirit desired.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Rashi describes this hand of the Lord as coming upon the prophet Ezekiel and driving him to wherever he is compelled to go. The text goes on saying, Ezekiel 37:2<\/a>, \u05d1 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d4\u05b6\u05e2\u05b1\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b7\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9 \u05e2\u05b2\u05dc\u05b5\u05d9\u05d4\u05b6\u05dd \u05e1\u05b8\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05d1 | \u05e1\u05b8\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05d1 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d4\u05b4\u05e0\u05bc\u05b5\u05d4 \u05e8\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05de\u05b0\u05d0\u05b9\u05d3 \u05e2\u05b7\u05dc-\u05e4\u05bc\u05b0\u05e0\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d4\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b4\u05e7\u05b0\u05e2\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d4\u05b4\u05e0\u05bc\u05b5\u05d4 \u05d9\u05b0\u05d1\u05b5\u05e9\u05c1\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05de\u05b0\u05d0\u05b9\u05d3: 37:2 He caused me to pass among them round about, and behold, there were very many on the surface of the valley; and lo, they were very dry. (NASB)<\/span><\/em> these things suggest that in the vision the Lord lifted him causing him to go to and fro over the valley to observe the dry bones.

Say to the breath: Thus said the Lord GOD: Come, O breath, from the four winds, and breathe into these slain, that they may live again.\u201d (Sefaria)<\/span><\/em> So the Lord tells Ezekiel to prophesy to the wind to breath life into these bones. Now it is interesting how the text states Ezekiel is to prophesy to the four winds (\u05de\u05b5\u05d0\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05d1\u05bc\u05b7\u05a4\u05e2 \u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05d7\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea\u0599). This idea of the four winds, does this give credence to the flat earthers? Revelation 7:1<\/a> also states, 7:1 \u201cAnd after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.\u201d (NASB)<\/em><\/span> The phrase corners of the earth is used in several places in the Bible as a figurative term for the outermost borders or most distant parts of the earth. Examples of this may be taken from the book of Job where Job\u2019s friend Elihu describes the voice of the Lord as thunder and lightning in Job 37:2-3<\/a>, \u201cKeep listening to the thunder of his voice and the rumbling that comes from his mouth. Under the whole heaven he lets it go, and his lightning to the corners of the earth.\u201d<\/em><\/span> (ESV, \u05e9\u05b4\u05c1\u05de\u05b0\u05e2\u05a4\u05d5\u05bc \u05e9\u05b8\u05c1\u05de\u05a3\u05d5\u05b9\u05e2\u05b7 \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05e8\u05b9\u05a3\u05d2\u05b6\u05d6 \u05e7\u05b9\u05dc\u0591\u05d5\u05b9 \u05d5\u05b0\u059d\u05d4\u05b6\u0597\u05d2\u05b6\u05d4 \u05de\u05b4\u05e4\u05b4\u05bc\u05a5\u05d9\u05d5 \u05d9\u05b5\u05e6\u05b5\u05bd\u05d0\u05c3 \u05ea\u05b7\u05bc\u05bd\u05d7\u05b7\u05ea\u05be\u05db\u05b8\u05bc\u05dc\u05be\u05d4\u05b7\u05e9\u05b8\u05bc\u05c1\u05de\u05b7\u05a5\u05d9\u05b4\u05dd \u05d9\u05b4\u05e9\u05b0\u05c1\u05e8\u05b5\u0591\u05d4\u05d5\u05bc \u05d5\u05b0\u059d\u05d0\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8\u0597\u05d5\u05b9 \u05e2\u05b7\u05dc\u05be\u05db\u05b7\u05bc\u05e0\u05b0\u05e4\u05a5\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b8\u05bd\u05e8\u05b6\u05e5\u05c3) Here the word \u05db\u05b7\u05bc\u05e0\u05b0\u05e4\u05a5\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea means edge or extremity, and is the root word used for \u05db\u05b8\u05bc\u05e0\u05b8\u05e3 for \u201cwing, extremity.\u201d<\/em><\/span> Therefore, this word for corners in the English translation, is from the Hebrew word for \u201cwings\u201d<\/span><\/em> as in the wings of a bird stretching out over its young. The fully stretched out wings are the extremities of the bird, therefore the corners described here about the earth is actually related to describing the extremities of a thing, the farthest reaches of the earth. When looking at the Hebrew text, this does not provide support for a flat earth. Here in Job Elihu is describing how the voice of the Lord fills all the earth, even to the farthest places, i.e. the ends of the earth. Another example may be given from Isaiah 11:12<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Isaiah 11:12
<\/strong>11:12 And He will lift up a standard for the nations And assemble the banished ones of Israel, And will gather the dispersed of Judah From the four corners of the earth.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Here the prophet Isaiah speaks in 11:12<\/a>, of a future restoration of Israel in which the dispersed of Judah will gather together from \u201cthe four corners of the earth.\u201d<\/span><\/em> The \u201cfour corners of the earth\u201d<\/em><\/span> again uses the Hebrew word \u05db\u05b8\u05bc\u05e0\u05b8\u05e3 for \u201cwing, extremity\u201d<\/em><\/span> as a reference to the earth\u2019s farthest reaches in the four cardinal directions: north, south, east, and west. This is the same idea that is being conveyed by Ezekiel\/s reference to the \u201cfour winds,\u201d<\/span><\/em> he is essentially referring to the compass as having four directions (North, East, South, West, Ezekiel 37:3<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Scriptures we are looking at for this week is from the Haftarah portion from Ezekiel 37:1-14<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The description has the bones receiving sinews, flesh, muscles, and skin, and then the Lord will give them \u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05d7\u05b7 (Ruach) and they will live. Here, the Lord speaks of giving the \u05e8\u05d5\u05d7 and life, this is different from the creation account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What we see here in Bereshit \/ Genesis 2:7<\/a> is the Lord \u05e0\u05b4\u05e9\u05b0\u05c1\u05de\u05b7\u05a3\u05ea \u05d7\u05b7\u05d9\u05b4\u05bc\u0591\u05d9\u05dd \u201cbreathing heavily life\u201d<\/span><\/em> into Adam. We do not see the use of the word \u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05d7\u05b7 but the word \u05e0\u05b4\u05e9\u05b0\u05c1\u05de\u05b7\u05a3\u05ea instead. This suggests that the Lord God took personal action to breath life into man, as opposed to what we are seeing here in the Ezekiel text of the four winds coming and giving breath to this army of people.

(NASB)<\/span><\/em> Throughout Ezekiel 37 we see the phrase \u05d1\u05df-\u05d0\u05d3\u05dd (Ezekiel 37:9<\/a>) meaning \u201cson of man.\u201d<\/span><\/em> The phrase \u05d1\u05df-\u05d0\u05d3\u05dd is a very well known phrase from the NT text as Yeshua referred to himself as being the son of man. This expression appears 107 times in the Hebrew Bible, the majority (93 times) in the Book of Ezekiel. We also note how the phrase \u05d1\u05df-\u05d0\u05d3\u05dd \u201cSon of Man\u201d<\/span><\/em> occurs 88 times in the New Testament and only four times outside of the gospels. Now in Ezekiel, this phrase is used in three main ways, (i) as a form of address, (ii) to contrast his lowly status of humanity against the exalted nature of God and the angels (Bamidbar \/ Numbers 23:19<\/a>, Tehillim \/ Psalms 8:4<\/a>), and (iii) as a future eschatological figure of whose coming will signal the end of history and bring the time of God\u2019s judgment (see Daniel 7:13-14<\/a>). Notice how another aspect of Ezekiel was found in his call to repentance to a people who have been exiled to Babylon. All of these things parallel Yeshua the Messiah in the Apostolic Writings. Point (iii) speaks of the end of days and coming judgementof God and we know according to Daniel 7 we learn about a vision given to Daniel of four beasts which represent the pagan nations. Daniel 7:13-14<\/a> describes how the Ancient of Days (God) gives dominion over the earth to \u201cone like a man\u201d<\/em><\/span> (\u05db\u05b0\u05bc\u05d1\u05b7\u05a5\u05e8 \u05d0\u05b1\u05e0\u05b8\u0596\u05e9\u05c1). Rashi explains saying, \u201cone like a man was coming\u201d That is the King Messiah. \u2018and\u2026 up to the Ancient of Days\u2019 Who was sitting in judgment and judging the nations. \u2018came\u2019 arrived, reached. \u2018And He gave him dominion\u2019 And to that man He gave dominion over the nations, for the heathens he likens to beasts, and Israel he likens to a man because they are humble and innocent. \u2018which will not be removed.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/em> Rashi\u2019s interpretation is this \u05d1\u05df-\u05d0\u05d3\u05dd is none other than the King Messiah of God. These are the reasons why Yeshua called himself \u05d1\u05b6\u05bc\u05df\u2013\u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b8\u05d3\u05b8\u05dd. The four gospels introduce the phrase, \u201c\u03c4\u1f78\u03bd \u03c5\u1f31\u1f78\u03bd \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u1f00\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03ce\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u201d, meaning literally \u201cthe son of the man.\u201d<\/em><\/span> This awkward expression in Greek is the translation of what we read here in the Hebrew Scriptures. We note the connection of the Messiah to this picture of resurrection that becomes the cornerstone of the Jewish belief in the resurrection from the dead to the King Messiah who is given power and authority and majesty over all by God. All of these things add a rich context and background to why Yeshua called Himself \u05d1\u05b6\u05bc\u05df\u2013\u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b8\u05d3\u05b8\u05dd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are completely cut off.\u2019 (NASB)<\/span><\/em> Note how these things describes dry bones, the meaning of which we can derive from this vision is that there is nothing good that comes out of a dead person or nation. Dried bones are symbolic of \u201cdeath\u201d<\/em><\/span> and the only one who has power over death is God. When we are feeling unworthy, weak, and of no use, like dry bones, the Lord God Almighty can restore everything for He is capable of doing the unimaginable. The Word of God is powerful for at the Word of God all things were created! God\u2019s Word tells us of the power of God to overcome all odds, and of God\u2019s love and mercy, and of the purpose for our lives. Then you will know that I, the Lord, have spoken and done it,\u2019 declares the Lord.\u2019\u2018 (NASB)<\/span><\/em> which speaks of God raising the dead, literally opening the graves and bring life from that which was dead! <\/strong>these bones are all the house of Israel They are an intimation and an example of the entire house of Israel in their exile, for they say, \u201cOur bones have become dried up from the troubles; our hope is lost, and what further hope can we have for salvation? Another explanation: All of these were of Israel, and because you revived them now, they say, \u201cOur hope is lost, and we shall not come to life once again when the dead are resurrected.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

These things speak to us in this special time of Passover how our hopelessness is turned into great hope as we have the God of all Creation on our side, to do the unimaginable! And as these things are connected to the King Messiah, they speak of hope, resurrection, and life in the Messiah Yeshua! Just as Rashi wrote, these things speak of a future expectation of the King Messiah, of hope, and resurrection, of doing the impossible, and the bringing of men out of the grave to be made alive to the service of God and His glory. What a powerful testimony Ezekiel provides for us at this time of the Passover! As God delivered Israel from the bondage of slavery from a great nation, and brought them to the mountain of Sinai to be His people in a covenant relationship, we too have this opportunity to make a covenant with God in the blood of the King Messiah Yeshua. These things speak to the power of God to deliver each and every one of us, and to make us alive, and healthy, and strong, as these things that God does for us are our testimony of the power of God\u2019s Word in our lives to save and set us free!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
